Agenda

•Status and Schedule

•Summary

2

Background

• “Foundational” experiment to support the

Particle Thickness Project

• Collection of IL/RL data at fine incremental

separation distances (~10 nm steps) using

nm precision stage and fixture

• Verifies that test setup ability to measure

effects of separation using multi-

wavelength IL/RL data

3

Connector Separation Plan

• Build test fixture to hold reference and

DUT halves of SC connectors

• Develop LabVIEW software to control the

PI nano-meter position stage and collect

IL/RL data

• Conduct experiments using this hardware

and software

• Report results to group

4

Test Fixture Description

• Test fixture

– optical bench base

– manually operated XYZ stage for initial alignment

– holders for the reference and DUT connectors

– load cell to measure compressive force during mating and

– nano precision stage (Z) for controlled connector separation

• Additional test system hardware

– IL/RL meter

– Drive electronics for stage

– computer

Test Protocol

1. Load clean connectors (UUT and Ref) into test fixture

2. Align the reference fiber and sleeve to the UUT

3. Cycle fixture to verify operation of load cell and determine

nominal starting location

4. Move to nominal contact force

5. Measure IL/RL*

6. Move selected step size (target is 10 nm steps)

7. Repeat 5 & 6 until specified distance (~3-5 μm)

8. Display and store IL/RL vs position

9. Compare to theoretical

8

* IL/RL measurements consist of user selected number of readings at each

wavelength

Status

• Fixture design completed

• Fixture custom parts machined by Tyco

• Fixture partially assembled; waiting on

load cell for completion

• LabVIEW software for control of IL/RL

instrument identified by Dave Fischer
