Eugen Popa: The first question is actually three in one: How, why and when did you start hypnosis, or, you know, what you are doing? Start on the path that you are now on?

Connirae Andreas: OK, that’s a big question; I’ll try to be succinct. I was in graduate school in clinical psychology, here, in Colorado, when I learned about NLP. My husband (my now husband, we weren’t married then), but my now husband and I learned about it at the same time, when I was in the early phase of my clinical psychology program, and trough NLP, really, I learned about Milton Erickson, who was an incredible hypnotist, and it’s Milton Erickson who has been, perhaps, the single most strong influence of my work of anyone, or at least among the top two or three. If not the single most. So you got there the when and where, and how, the why I didn’t get to that, though.

That, I think I grew up in a family where communication was not as good as I would have liked, and as a small child, I saw that my parents weren’t as happy communicating with each other as I would have liked and as I would like for myself, going into adulthood.

So, that really motivated me to... From a pretty young age, I really wanted to go into a field and learn how to be happier, really. How to get a lot of people better and … It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great, and that was the seed of the why. From then, that was my field.

Eugen Popa: Let me ask you this, because I know you don’t do an induction, but you watch the client and you see when they go into a trance.

Now, so many people ask that: “How do I know if the guy I’m working with is hypnotized”? How do you tell when they are in trance, if they are in trance or not?

Connirae Andreas: That is such an interesting question. I think it’s almost easier to answer if we think about it as an altered state, and a particular altered state, because there are so many different types of trances someone can go into. And a particular type of altered state it’s gonna be useful for a particular kind of thing.

So, recently, for example, I was working with a client , guiding him through a process, and this process, if you go trough the process, will help him get the change that he wants to have. At the beginning, he was telling me: ”Oh, I can’t do this. This is very confusing, I don’t understand it, I don’t know how!” Some people would go into that kind of a state, usually, and it’s a self induced trance of confusion. It’s a particular altered state, but not particularly useful.

So the initial questions, (this was in a training context, actually), the person that comes to mind now. So, I was training a small group of other people, and as I watched them and listen to them, and I begin to guide the person, I see that too much time is lagging. So the question happens, he goes inward, and right there, when he goes inward, as soon as he turns inward right then, he needs me to be there, to shift my tone and tempo, to match his altered … the change of consciousness that he is already showing me, to be with him and say: “Yes! And now, as you turn inward, what is the first thing that comes to mind?” you know, or something like that. Turning to what I want him be able to find inside, that shift of attention it’s already happening, it’s not … Trance isn’t an all in one thing, now they are in a trance, and now they’re not in the trance. And the kind of trances that I work with, anyway, are more subtle, it’s like; “Ok, there is that shift of focus, there’s that shift of attention”; the beginning of getting inward, where, if I now give him a way to focus his attention, he can find the answer. If I wait too long, he’ll come out and go back to his confusion routine.

(...)I have a little story about that too, That comes to my

mind, because it’s from the master of non-communication, Milton Erickson.

When my husband and I were visiting him, the first time that I was there, he was at the end of his life, working with small groups of professionals only.

So people who had some masters degree in some kind of counseling or therapy or psychology would came to see him in small groups, so we were about 10 people, maybe 12, sitting in a circle of chairs, crammed into his small office that he had. He is there, he’s sitting in his wheelchair, at that point in time, and telling people stories, inviting questions, answering people’s questions, and, of course, he was a master of teaching through experience rather than through concept.

So, he asked the whole group: “So, how can you tell if someone is in a trance?” (and that’s the question you asked earlier). “How can you tell if someone is in a trance?

So, various people started giving him all of these formal answers: “Well, you see this... lalalala”. They had all these conceptual answers to offer.

So, he listens to a few of them, and then he turned to one of the women in the circle, and he said to her: “Where are we?” and she looked at him sort of wide-eyed and she said:” In the apple tree!” and he said to her: “And who am I?” and she says: “Tommy!”

So, he pointed out to us that here was, in our very own circle, someone who was in a quite deep trance state, and obviously he had induced this trance indirectly, as he was prone to do, and none of us realized it.
