Connolly’s RED MILLS British Open Indoor Cross Country

Its that time of year again and it will do us good to remember that laminitis is not just a fat pony problem! Laminitis can affect any age, breed or gender of horse. Laminitis is the result of an imbalance in the body and can be caused by many factors including the diet. Here’s a few tips on how to manage or prevent laminitis:

For horse and ponies prone to laminitis it is best to control the amount of sugars in their diet. Grass is the most natural form of feed for horses but unfortunately contains high amounts of sugars once the daylight lengthens. As sugar content relates to the amount of daylight hours, it is better to graze the horse at night when sugar levels drop. Grazing on a paddock that is low in grass or has been grazed down already will also help. When the pony is stabled soak the forage as

it will also contain sugars; just 1 hour incold water will remove 30% of the sugars.

Avoid feeding grain based diets, e.g. traditional cubes and mixes, as these are also high in sugars, but don’t forget to keep up their intake of vitamins and minerals up as they are needed to keep the horse in good health. Lamicare provide all the vitamins, minerals and protein a pony/horse needs and is totally grain free. Lamicare also contains MOS and FOS to keep the digestive system healthy and has added biotin, zinc, magnesium and calcium forhoof strength and growth.

For further information on feeding horses and ponies please contact our equine nutritionists at the Connolly’s RED MILLS offi ce.

Here at Connolly’s RED MILLS we like to do our best for our customers. This issue we are featuring a Labrador breeder, Rose Kelly, based in Co Meath. Rose has been breeding Labradors for a long time and has had many successes in the show ring, the most prestigious of which was coming fourth in the

massive Labrador class at Crufts. Rose moved to Ireland and bumped into us at PetExpo in the RDS last year; she has been feeding our LEADER dog food range ever since. She has now switched all of her dogs to LEADER dog food, from her pups right through to her old faithfuls. Here is what Rose had to say:

‘I was looking for a true Super Premium Dog food (very high meat content, Omega 3/6 fatty acids to promote a shiny coat, as well as all natural ingredients to aid digestion and boost my dogs’ immune systems), and I was delighted to find RED MILLS LEADER which had the high quality nutrition I needed at excellent value for money’. I have been using RED MILLS LEADER dog food for over a year now and all my dogs are thriving on it.”

The LEADER range contains PUPPY, JUNIOR, ADULT, SUPREME and LITE with an ENERGY Line specifically for very active dogs. For any further information on these products, or if you want to find your closest stockist, please contact Ronan Cullen on 086 3886823.

Top Training Tips from Dog Behaviorist, Julie HolmesBefore you start to train your dog the following should be taken into account:

He does not speak English and therefore cannot understand you until he has learnt properly what you want.

He thinks differently to you - if you tell him to ‘get down’ when he jumps up on you he may well learn that ‘get down’ means to jump up as a dog learns by association.

He values ‘reward’ differently to you. Some dogs may take punishment as a reward as any attention is better than no attention at all.

If your dog’s behaviour suddenly changes firstly consult your vet and have a full health check. If the dog is healthy then the behaviour change could be down to a change in home life or food.

Some complete foods have a quantity of colourants and sugar, which can have a detrimental effect on your dog; RED MILLS pride themselves on providing a complete dog food that is completely natural.

The first lesson your dog needs to learn is his/her name and to associate it with something nice.

Every mealtime call his/her name in a pleasant manner and when they respond give them their bowl of food.

One method of training is to use the dogs name, a tasty treat in your hand and you lure the dog into the required position, label what they are doing – praise and then give the reward – ACTIVE TRAINING

Another method is to label everything your dog is doing, if it is a behaviour you want him to repeat at a later date – PASSIVE TRAINING

Whichever method you use make a habit of – Action or Behaviour first, then label and praise what they are doing until the command results in the Action or Behaviour.

Keep all training sessions short, successful and happy.

Dogs will often repeat an action that gets a reaction e.g. if you tell him/her off for jumping up at the worktop, he/she may do this again if you are not giving them any attention.

“All my dogs are pets first and foremost but I also compete in Obedience, Trials and Breed with the Border Collies. Along with my terrier crossbreed they also do film and television work. I want them to be fit and healthy whatever they are doing and RED MILLS is the dog food that I feed as it keeps them healthy, fit and alert.” Julie Ann Holmes

Knowsley Jake has won 5 races from 11 starts and was only out of the first three on one occasion. He was bred by John O’Connor, trained by Bernadette Connolly and owned by Raymond A. Lawson. Charolais ChampionsThis month we are featuring a Charolais breeder from Macroom Co Cork. Conchur O Luasa contacted us when his bull took first prize in Bantry Show last year. He feeds all his cattle, both pedigree and commercial, on Connolly’s RED MILLS feed and insists that is the best feed around. The move provides RED MILLS with strong export markets into other Scandavian markets such as Denmark and Finland.

“Overnight successes such as the Krafft deal are always the result of years of hard work,” says Michael Connolly, “but I would pay tribute to our partners in Krafft for having the vision to see how co-branding could really work, and it is, as we are jointly supplying the Swedish Olympic Equestrian Team.

Red Mills - Now available in China

Freshness is the new quality standard

With our unequalled ‘milk round’ delivery system in Ireland – our Irish customers have always had the benefit of fresh products. However the process of transporting goods around the planet has always posed challenges to our products’ freshness especially in hot and humid climates. As a result of over 12 years of research and development RED MILLS is delighted to reveal our new Nutritious Freshness System NFS which combines vacuum technology, inert gases, and three different types of natural nutrient preservation.

“Red Mills horse feeds are now available in 27 countries all over the world.” “This new patent pending technology ensures that our products will be as fresh as the day they were made for over one year after they have been manufactured”, says Michael Connolly. “The good news is that the process is completely natural and we have proven it on over 1,000 tonnes of product in very hot and humid climatic conditions. We can now send our unique quality products to the ends of the earth.”

New Logistics For FranceWe would like to congratulate our partners Nouriel for their continued investment with us in France. The new 600 tonne warehouse is a great vote of confidence in our growing export business to France.

‘The First Human Level Dog Foods’Safe food in today’s world is becoming more and more of an issue and RED MILLS are the company to successfully achieve a unique standard of pet food which meets the same standard of production as that for humans, and indeed is made from meat derived from animals suitable for human consumption. This business is the result of 4 years hard work and partnership with the company S.C. Johnson based in Yokohama. See our website for more details: www.redmills.info

National Horse Feed Distribution In JapanRED MILLS presence in the Japanese market is going from strength to strength with the opening of our third major horse feeds distributor near Rhitto in the South West. The coming together of Connolly’s RED MILLS and Morrin’s Pedigree feeds is a clear demonstration of Irish agri-food businesses consolidating their strength, knowledge of customer needs and established brands to deliver a complete range of products to ensure your animals get the best value feeds required.

Reform of agricultural policies at European and Global level will impact heavily on Irish agriculture during the forth-coming years. One aspect that will receive much appreciated support from our current government is organic farming. In anticipation of this development Morrin’s established a supply of certified organic feeds several years ago.
