A Carbon Zero and LEED Platinum design, intended as a residential

community comprised of modified stacked shipping containers. Through modificiations to the module the living

space can be expanded to house larger family sizes. The units then sit

off set from each other creating a pedestrian oriented open frontage that

becomes a point of interaction be-tween the members of the community.

Sustanaible design features include a concrete trombe wall, photovoltaic

louvers, rainwater collection, a building automated system, superinsulated

walls and the reoovery of a parking lot and transforming it into a green space

    with occupiable living.

    Proposed Redevelopment

The Concept: To revitalize a fairly vacant parking lot, with green space, and to reconnect to the downtown service area in a more pedestrian oriented method. With the occu-pancy of residents, and the introduction of large green spaces, the objective is to no longer have a vacant, nega-tive, wasted space.

Power:The main power source for the house are the roof photovoltaics, and the solar lou-vers that lie within the south facing solar chimney. They provide the energy to drive the electricity within the house. Heating and cooling is controlled through a different system. The photovoltaics in both cases, double as shading devices in the summer time. The Solar Louvers prevent the con-crete thermal mass from overheating and in turn heating up the house in the summer. The photovoltaics provide shading for the outdoor patio, creating a relaxing exterior space Solar Louver Detail

    EXPLORE DESIGN

Completed as part of a design build industrial design elective course, I took

part in the design and full scale pro-totyping of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture Pavilion at the

Explore Design Booth. The space was meant to have a diagonal flowing cir-culation pattern with work exhibited to the outside. Particular features also in-cluded an illuminated wall of collaged

undergraduate work as well as a white bar overhead, meant to address a

connection across the space as well as provide signing for the school out

to the rest of the space.

Notes: Direct application of stud wall construction, as well as testing of cove lighting systems and connections be-tween steel conduit and wood frame.

The proposal for the 2009 Explore Design Pavilion strives to meet the marketing and program intentions in order to successfully showcase Water-loo Architecture to prospective students. The pavilion endeavours to engage students through an experience that they could not get from the school website or from a tour. Through the application of hands-on elements and the use of visual aids, the pavilion creates an interesting experience that lives up to Waterloos acclaimed reputation as the best architecture school in Canada. It is believed that the pavilion will allow students to take away valuable information with them regarding what the school has to offer and what it means to be an architecture student.

    DEPLOYMENT

The 2009 Explore Design Pavilion is expected to be broken down into smaller components and packed into a 26 moving truck. The Pavilion will then be assembled on site on October 13, 2009, the day before Explore Design.

    Time Period

The Truck will be rented twice over the period of three days, to avoid additional costs on the middle day. Thus it will be rented once to drop off for assembly, and then once again to disassem-ble and bring back to UWSA. The pavilion will be assembled within the 2 hour window that waterloo has signed up for (time TBD).

    Size

Due to the Pavilion size a 26 truck will need to be rented at 168$ per day (UHaul: before tax)

    Required Equipment

To assemble on site, our team will need at least 10 people of man-power, using power drills and hardware. Some attachments will be joined through slotting and friction fit connections including the premade connections for the aluminum conduit.

    IMminent urbanism

Situated in South Parkdale, Toronto through an analysis of transporta-tion patterns of type and density, I

created a vision of a new community space containing urban density while

maintaining programmable pedestrian streets that will re-evaluate the role of the automobile in city living. The main

structures are composed of undulating roofscape buildings used as bridges over a new greenway in place of the

gardiner that contains new light rail lines as well as walking and biking

paths. By offsetting more traffic onto public transit it discourages a com-

muter lifestyle in order to help develop the downtown as well as promote

    more energy conscious living

  • INsense Space

There is an important emphasis on the experience that embodies all

senses in a strong and unique way. Incense provides a connection with all

senses, as well as being a universal symbol within many spiritual communi-ties. The implementation of this project

is essentially a physical space whose deformation over time represents

the bond between people through memory. The space is intended to

heighten awareness of inner body and outer body experiences and aims to

reconnect the individuals with a place that unlocks memories and allows for

contemplation in a way that moves forward from the traditional social/

    spiritual human infrastructure.

Purple Coloured Incense are often related to the act of cleansing and refreshing the body and mindThe diffferent types are balanced between common spiritual types as well as those with less spiri-tual significance. With the varying types throughout the space the different aromas will invoke existing memories as well as create new ones.

    SITE PLAN 1:500

    1. Implementation of a 30cmx30cm grid overtop of the footprint in order to enable a system compatible with the established component size.

    2. Divide the space into three zones based on the shape of the room.

    4. Establish an entrance threshold where open space will exist, as well as a privacy threshold at the front window to act as an initial screen into the room.Initial design typologies for the different zones. Smaller, Perimeter spaces towards the front and a large central space at the back to accomodate for different kinds of habitation.

    5. Desired circulation derived from previous rules.

    6. Overlay of circulation diagram on the grid, the path begins to carve itself out of a volume.

    7. Relationship between natural lighting and incense colour/type established in a radial fashion.

    234 QUEEN STREET EAST

A temporal space that changes shape as people come and share in the space. Through spiritual offering the place becomes physically marked with the contemplation of each person that chooses to do so.

As the ashes build and the structure changes, the air lls with an overwhelming aroma, awakens the body and instills an experience enriched with memories of the past but also a lasting new memory of a place where commu-nity, caring and remembrance is instilled through a celebration of spirit and faith.

A continuously evolving landscape of memory, reection and hope-Janette Kim and Chloe Town

Increasingly the whole world has come to smell alike: gasoline, detergents, plumbing, and junk foods coalesce into the catholic smog of our age. Ivan Illich, 1985

The perception of the city as a place that must be constantly washed is of recent origin...the city is suddenly perceived as an evil-smelling place. for the rst time in history, the utopia of the odorless city appears. Ivan Illich, 1985

Smells that are now universal and specic smells, produced by particular activities, sources of energy, aromas and spices, plants, owers, animals and garbage overlay one another, forming landscapes of smell that are invisible, but nonetheless present and real.

Incense Colour

    SandalwoodAgarwood Lavender Patchouli

Design development for the lobby, elevator lobby and cab as well as of-fice floor lobby in a business tower in Chongqing, China. Multiple iterations

were completed and consultation with the client determined a lobby

space predominately comprised of limestone panels. Complimented by frosted glass and stainless steel that

comprise elevator entrances. The project involved digital drafting of plans

and sections of the space as well as elevator cab details, lighting and wall

section details as well as digital mod-eling and rendering of the space.

Notes: Digital model was created in Rhino and then rendered with V-ray

for 3ds Max. Project completed with Associate Principal Nyirabu Nyirabu. Additional work was completed for a

    confidential project in Goreagon, India.

  • Situated in South Parkdale, Toronto through an analysis of transporta-tion patterns of type and density, I

created a vision of a new community space containing urban density while

maintaining programmable pedestrian streets that will re-evaluate the role of the automobile in city living. The main

structures are composed of undulating roofscape buildings used as bridges over a new greenway in place of the

gardiner that contains new light rail lines as well as walking and biking

paths. By offsetting more traffic onto public transit it discourages a com-

muter lifestyle in order to help develop the downtown as well as promote

    more energy conscious living

Notes: Direct application of stud wall construction, as well as testing of cove lighting systems and connections be-tween steel conduit and wood frame.

The rationale of the vertical farm integrates void spaces over multiple levels with a selection of crop types organized by their stage of cultivation: planting, growing or harvesting. The vertical farm will also provide occupants the unique opportunity to balance the cost of their stay by contributing to the sustainability of the farm through various functions and chores. The iridescent membrane structure also provides irrigation to the farm by collecting rainwater at the top and filtering into the structure and interior spaces.

The functions of the design are rationalized into a variety of cellular forms sized to correlate with their use, the smallest cell representing a single bed unit. The social areas of the hostel intermittently occupy multiple levels and represent vibrant Cell Collectives. The pinnacle of Hostel Artemisia culminates in a Sky Bar which will provide a currently unavailable but breathtaking 360 degree view of Barcelona exclusive only to Hostel Artemisia patrons. The two-sided approach to the designs orientation allows the farm to maintain maximum sun exposure while providing adequate shade to the habitable spaces. Hostel Artemisia will be a contemporary hub redefining Bohemian architecture within the gothic quarter and become a beacon-like landmark for visitors interested in a unique Barcelona experience.

  • CASA DELLA CITTA

Situated in the Campo Martius in Rome, Italy this house for the city is

imagined as a stacked layering of pro-grams containing distinct architectural references juxtapositioned together in

as a means to create a unique identity for traditional features of Rome. By

envisioning these elements differently from their traditional archaic forms found in palazzos, cathedrals and

within the overall urban fabric of thte city, it propels forward the question of a new identity in a city compact with

    historicity.
