Project Title Extended Project

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)I am making a short documentary based on a men’s street wear sub culture. This decision has come from a personal interest in this area, specifically around brands such as Supreme and Palace. These brands are being used as a way for young entrepreneurs to make money, as there is very high demand for their products with very limited supply. During this project my hopes are to educate myself further on this topic, as well as informing others and introducing a new audience into a community then may not be familiar with. To produce this project, I will use the skills I have acquired on the course in all three stages of production. My extended project will use all of these learnt skills to produce a short piece on fashion, which will attract both audiences already interested in the matter and new audiences to this sub culture. Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)My project will require a number of process’ and skills. My primary role will be the director; however, I will have to take on many roles as this is an independently produced project. Starting with research I will conduct both primary and secondary research to gather a wide range of findings. For primary I will employ techniques such as interviews, focus groups and photography around my subject. A lot of my research will also come from secondary techniques, and for this I

will find online articles and videos on my subject as well as magazines and books. Doing this will give me a well-rounded knowledge base of my subject and allow me to move onto pre-production paper work. This will involve paperwork such as storyboards, location recce and scripts. From this planning I will have a template and solid plan to begin my production. I can use my own camera for this task, and either employ small LED lights or natural lighting. As I am planning to shoot on location I will be using the natural lighting and can also have equipment such as a Steadicam to ensure my shots are smooth and cinematic. As I have planned for my work to be in a documentary style, I will produce my own script but also interview others on my topic. I will edit my work in AVID, and use editing techniques such as colour grading to guarantee my project looks as professional and filmic as possible. Overall I see my project as very achievable, as I have a passion for my subject, and all the resources available to produce it. Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words)For my evaluation and reflection of the Extended project I will firstly document my reflection of every step of the process, and then at the end of production I will collate and reflect on this. This will give me a chance to reflect and evaluate the project, so I can keep on top of it and make sure I am where I should be. I will also do this to collate everything I have learnt from the process, to try and use it to my benefit in the future. I will evaluate how each stage of the project has gone, research, pre-production, filming and post production. This will give me a good idea of how each stage of production has gone in detail, and offer me a chance to see what I have learnt. As well as this I will upload the project to YouTube and Twitter to get feedback from the public (as well as tutors) and will document this feedback on my blog. I will also arrange some sort of showing of my project in person, to get personal feedback and see an audience’s reaction. CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Introduction to the Chapter - This portfolio is my extended project for my second year UAL Film & TV course. My project will be in the form of a short documentary, based on men’s street wear fashion cultures. In this chapter I will show the development of my idea by looking at the background of my project idea, as well as the background of my other work and what I have learnt on the course. As well as this I will complete my research plan, which will help me in the further chapters of both research and pre-production. This research plan and work surrounding it will reveal why my project is important, and the core skills I have developed to make it.

The Background of my Project

There are a lot of factors influencing my project, especially my motivations behind producing it. This sub culture of fashion I am exploring is one that I have a deep interest in personally, so this in itself is driving me to produce the project. My personal experiences in this area are ones such as being complimented on fashion sense and particularly items of clothing from these highly exclusive brands. I have also made money from selling these exclusive items of clothing on for a profit, and for a teenager without a job like myself it is a very easy and efficient way of making money. Looking at the skill development aspect of this project there are a lot of my skills I will have to put into practice. It will be my first exploration into documentary film making, which requires its own set of skills in itself. For this I will have to ensure I have a strong script as a voiceover to some parts of the video, a common part of documentary and something that will grip the audience. My target audience is varied when it comes to this project, as I would like people such as myself who have a pre-existing interest in this sub culture to watch it as well as new comers to the culture. However, I aim for both of these target audiences to be more informed than before watching my project.

During this project I will be the project leader and use my skills in every stage of production. I will research into this sub culture of fashion, and different trends in previous eras before starting my pre-production. Pre-production and the paper work that comes with it will form the initial base for my project in terms of storyboards and schedules. My focus in this project will be the cinematography side, with an emphasis on camera and editing techniques. Although I am aiming for a documentary style I would like for some of my shots to be cinematic. Camera and editing work is something I want to pursue as a career, so getting more experience in now is nothing but beneficial for me.

What did I learn on my course?

https://magic.piktochart.com/output/21123128-course-timeline

What is my project about?

My extended project is about men’s street wear fashion. It is based on the core human

feelings of the need to belong and be a part of a group, and I will explore how this tribe

mentality can be applied to some fashion trends. These trends I am exploring are based

around exclusive clothing/shoe releases, which create both hype amongst communities and

business opportunities for entrepreneurial millennials. Men’s fashion trends have been

evolving for decades now, however there has never been such an obsession with getting

sought after products as there is now. These products can fetch exuberant amounts of

money, as well as creating a lot of conversation. My project will provide an insight into this

culture that has been created surrounding certain brands.

Why my project is important? I feel my project is important for a number of reasons. On a personal level I have a deep interest in this subject, in both terms of style and the business side. For myself it’s also important to try other forms of media, and this will be my first exploration into documentary film making. In the journey of this project I hope to educate myself on the history of this sub culture, as well as the reasons behind it’s huge following. It is a sub culture in itself, however it’s affected by other cultures such as music, and exploring this link is something that is also important to my project. There are also many others like me who share this passion for certain brands, and for them a video exploring this culture can be a very interesting and informative watch. Another interesting aspect of my project is psychological ways of looking at fashion, such as the need to belong to a group. This is a core human need, and fashion is something that can satisfy this need very easily. Just the purchase of one t shirt or joining a group on social media can make an individual feel like they belong to something very big. Overall the personal (experimenting, self-education) and wider (links with cultures, business, informing others) factors of my project is what will make it so important.

My Research Plan

Table 3- My Research Plan

EXTENDED PROJECT - RESEARCH PLAN No of Words

Interest/Topic/Theme 150My area of interest for my FMP is fashion. Specifically, I am interested in men’s street wear and the culture surrounding it. This culture is one of both individual style and business, as these highly sought after products can draw a lot of attention as well as making individuals a lot of money through re sale markets. This is something I have developed a personal interest in and would like to show this culture in the form of a short documentary. This way I can easily inform the audience without having to worry about any dramatic techniques, just facts and information on my topic. Why is it important? - Importance 100I believe that fashion and specifically my interest in street wear is important due to the deep history of this sub culture, as well as

how and why the hype happens. There are millions of people interested in clothing brands, some of which only release small quantities of products. These products then become very sought after and a culture of hype is created. From this hype a culture of both business as well as lifestyle have combined to create groups of dedicated fans of these brands. My interest is in presenting this to an audience in a compelling visual way, and showing people a world they may not be familiar with.My research question(s) 100I am trying to find out a number of things with my research plan. Firstly, I will look at what form I want my project to be in, either short film or short documentary. After this I will then look into my topic of fashion, specifically areas such as male street wear trends and the groups created from them in past era’s. As part of my research I also want to look into the history of some of these current street wear brands, as well as how they compare to brands that aren’t labelled as street wear and what sets them apart. I’m also looking to find out why there is such a big culture of hype and desire surrounding these brands.

Research Design 100My research will be done using both primary and secondary methods. For primary research I will be conducting photography and note taking on the topic of fashion, as well as interviews with others. Secondary research will be the bulk of my work, as this way I can research both the street wear history and what form of video I want to make. To decide on the form, I will look into previous work on the same subject and look at what form those videos are to gain inspiration from. Online research will also help me look into the culture of street wear more, and get information that I couldn’t do from primary research. This includes interviews with people who have founded brands, people I would not be able to interview. Other secondary resources such as magazines will be used.Literature (Proposed Sources – Harvard Format)YouTube, 2017 (Online) Available at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh7ttG6-bf3XMsv1CkZLI6QDate Accessed 18/04/17, The Unknown Vlogs YouTube, 2017 (Online) Available at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUNc0C03trkDate Accessed 18/04/17, Complex News

CHAPTER 2

Literature/Resources Review

Introduction The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter. For example:

A large body of resources (films, web pages, literature, magazine articles, etc.) on the short film, roles of writer, producer and film director, the topic of unemployment and youth crime, professional skills and practices provide a basis for my EXTENDED PROJECT and final short film.

This chapter will present a review of different literature and resources I have consulted for this project and how it influenced my further research, study and development of the final idea for the project. The chapter will start with my Practitioners Report looking at two prominent film directors. It also looks at the magazines and web sources relating to unemployment and youth crime. The chapter concludes with ideas and key conclusion of all resources used in this chapter.

This chapter is important as it will: Tell the reader what you have learnt from previous work/literature/resources and how

you position yourself in relation to previous work in chosen discipline/theme/topic/interest, within which your project is located.

Provide evidence that you are well informed.

Examine and explore existing media products, practices and ideas in the spirit of creativity and imagination (What makes different media product distinct from one another?). Identify different media projects and other research sources related to your media project. Record and analyse findings. (You can use any media format to record your findings). Answer questions (What? Why? /How? /Look for specific problems and issues (theoretical

Research Design

Introduction

This chapter is ‘How-to’ section of your EXTENDED PROJECT. In this chapter you have to introduce the design of the research, how data was collected.

The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter. For example:

This chapter explains research design for my EXTENDED PROJECT. It starts with research questions and follows by the description of the research design and research methods used in my project.

Research Questions

Start with stating the intent of your EXTENDED PROJECT. What are the key aims and objectives of your project? Outline the key characteristics of your project. Write about your questions? You have to base your research design on questions and interests. Ask yourself: “What do I want to find out?” Write to the reader clear research questions, what you wanted to find out?

In this chapter, you will expand on what you wrote in your project proposal. Write about what you researched and how you collected your data (research activities). Remember, in this chapter, you will only write what you have researched and what research activities you used. In the next chapter, you will write about your findings, analysis and conclusions. You can write following chapters about findings and analysis using same themes (see below) for the sub-titles.

You can use following research themes as separate sub-titles:

• Subject you are going to research (this will be primary research you conducted; the secondary research about subject will be in literature review)

o This is anything done by you, and it could be such:o Online questionnaire – you could ask your Facebook friends to comment on your

project idea and give you some additional ideas how you can make it better.o Get the feedback from your lecturers and comment on it. o You can contact companies, council, artist depending on what is your project about to

get their opinion on your project idea. o You can use your phone or tablet to research, take photos of possible locations and

places that you can use in your project.

• Target audience

Ask yourself questions: Who? What? Where?

o Who is your target audience? Who are you aiming your product at?o What type of audience is it? Investigate the target demographic and record the type of

media or entertainment they consume. o Where can you find this out? You can use, ‘YouGov Profiles’ site to find out about your

target audience demographic. (secondary)o You can set up interviews or record a ‘Vox Pops’ (primary) to find information about

your audience.

• Skills and techniques

o Come up with the plan of what skills and techniques you will need to research to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project.

o For example, you can watch tutorials or read about how to achieve specific skills and techniques that you will need for your project (secondary)

o Experiment with range of skills yourself (primary)

• Production research

o Explain what and how:

o People needed for the production/availability (how: emails, Facebook, Skype conversation, etc.)

o Research production roles that you will need to carry out and how to do it successfully (how: the internet, media books, etc.)

o Production schedule (how: create your own) o Budget (How: secondary internet, primary ask yourself) o Recce research/location needed (how: take images, contact individuals for permission,

etc.) o Health and safety research ( How: take images, check locations yourself, ask for

permission) o Visual ideas (storyboard optional) (How: take images, create sketches, get inspired by

other people ideas, etc.) o Props (how: make a list, ask to borrow, make it, buy it, use what you have)o Production (techniques, hardware, workflow) ( how: research what you need / how:

try it yourself) o Post -production (Edit, colour correction, VFX, etc. ( how: read, watch how other

people/professionals do it, try it yourself)

List all research activities; what activities you conducted to answer your questions and collect the data? Write about the data you collected; your choice of data presentation and how you structured your data analysis.

The research activities should be identified e.g:-

Observations (observational drawings; using photography, video and audio to collect data)

Documents analysis (written, but also video and audio documents) Workshops Interviews Focus groups Surveys (visual, audio, etc.) Experiments Tests and measurements

CHAPTER 4

Research Findings

In this chapter, you will summarise the collected data and the statistical treatment, and/or mechanics, of analysis. You should start this paragraph by briefly restating the topic/theme of your project (take it from Chapter 1).

Explain the object of each question, research activity, point out results, and present those results in a chosen form of summarised data. Select method of presenting data carefully.

In a quantitative study, the results usually begin with a description of the sample (e.g., sample size, description of participants who were excluded and why, handling of missing data). Next, descriptive statistics (e.g., frequencies/percentages for categorical variables, means, standard deviations, and ranges for continuously measured variables) are presented.

In a qualitative study, the results often include many quotes from participants who were interviewed. Here you should also present your non-textual elements such as photos, videos, audio files, maps, tables, charts, mind maps, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis, etc.

Data analysis

What strategies did you use to analyse your data? What did you find out?

Conclusion - How did the research help me with my project?

What did you learn from your research and how it informed your project?

Originate a range of ideas – list all ideas you had and explain how you chose the final idea Analyse each idea for viability - use focus groups and lecturer to support Fill out the project proposal form

CHAPTER 5

My Project

Introduction In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production

Produce Pre-Production Portfolio which will formally define your project (location survey; risk assessment; treatment; script; budget; schedule etc.).

Pitch your proposal to the production board (video recording of your production board presentation)

Analyse your target audience. Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume

Production Project management techniques, (notes of team meetings; production and post-

production schedules; call sheets, etc.) Team and individual performance monitoring (weekly check against schedule) Development – Demonstrate development (photos from the shoot, screenshots from

computers). Keep daily production and post-production diary and reflect on your production process.

Post-production Describe post post-production of your project. Assess your production and post-production process. Describe, and critically analyses any

production problems and the solution you experienced.

Presentation

In this chapter, you should demonstrate the degree of competence and proficiency shown in the organisation and presentation of yourself and your work to an audience. Your EXTENDED PROJECT has to be presented appropriately (effectively; imaginatively) presented with suitable (relevant; purposeful) media conventions to suit the target audience.

Write about what influenced your decision to present your work in a certain way.

CHAPTER 7

Project Evaluation

Critically evaluating your final media project against the agreed requirements and parameters. Answer following questions:

Introduce the project in your words List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any

influences here? - art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do (what happens if). How did it affect your

development? Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what

comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to

help you with this Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage

to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your

brief? Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or

worse than you expected? What was the feedback from the client/lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?

Did it go better or worse than you expected? What was the feedback from your lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?
