CONSIDER THIS:

• Several organisations – though still a minority – that have chosen to challenge ‘business-as-usual’ by truly caring for all their stakeholders (SPICE – Society, Partners, Investors, Customers, Employees & Environment) have out-performed the old-world organisations (that focus only on profit for shareholders) by 900%. These include Toyota, Google, UPS, Johnson & Johnson etc.

• These businesses (Source: ‘Firms of Endearment- Raj Sisodia et al)

• Freely challenge industry dogma e.g. The fastest growing company in the sneaker industry in the US, ‘New Balance’ places greater

emphasis on fit and function (substance) than on styling (form) than Nike, Reebok and Adidas.

• Align and synergise between stakeholders e.g. UPS focuses on triple bottom line- economic, environmental and social and Honda stays engaged with surrounding communities and creates mutually beneficial relationships with suppliers

• Willingly break traditional trade-offs ( the western ‘either-or’ mindsets and embrace both and beyond) e.g. High employee wages and low prices and high value to customers.

• Take a long term perspective rather than being driven by Wall street e.g. They don’t scale back investments in R & D for showing good ‘quarterly performance’

• Favour organic growth instead of mindless rapid growth. e.g. being prepared before launching

• Blend work and play e.g. An announcement in Southwest Airlines: ‘Please pretend to pay attention while we explain safety features. No

one ever reads the safety card in the seat pocket so I am not going to even bother asking you… ‘ ;-)

• Reject traditional marketing models – In many industries in the US, the marketing function consumes over 50% of the corporate

resources. However, unlike these old world strategies, conscious businesses are sustained more by direct experience and great word of mouth.

In Swedish, the oldest term for ‘business’ is ‘narings liv’, literally, ‘nourishment for life’.The ancient Chinese characters (pictograms) for ‘Business’ translate as ‘life’ and ‘meaning’. Working together can indeed be a deep source of life meaning. Anything less is just a job. -Peter Senge in the foreword of ‘The Living Company- Arie De Geus’

Page 3: Conscious Capitalism, Conscious Leadership

Some important questions to ponder are:

• What does it take to build a business like that?• What is the kind of ‘Leadership’ that can sustain and evolve such organisations?• How does an organisation evolve into an ‘ecosystem’ that takes care of all its stakeholders?

The four tenets of Conscious Businesses are:

• Conscious Leadership • Multi-stakeholder Synergy • Higher Purpose • Conscious Cultures

Our experience since 1996 in developing senior leaders shows that it is a special kind of ‘Co-creative Leadership’ which requires a 4-dimensional approach:

• Mind (The Thinking Dimension) : There are certain mindsets and shifts that are required in the leadership that can then result in building such a business.

• Heart (The Feeling Dimension- Emotional Intelligence): The art of the heart, of building relationships, connecting and co-creating vs. directing, command & control. Subtleties of shifting communication to a conversation.

• Body (The Action Dimension- Execution Intelligence) : The whole aspect of creating results by bridging the gap between knowing and doing, creating structures and processes and more.

All born from • Spirit (The Being Dimension) : Moving from effectiveness to greatness, from his-story (history) to her-story to our story. Honouring intuition, developing Presence and an inner Power as different from Force.

“… Our senior people who have attended Kiran’s workshop have benefited greatly by it, as have I personally. The workshop is deep yet practical, offering a mirror to see your own abilities and ... Going through a series of exercises (experiences)…, I was able to easily identify rough edges in the way I was relating to people. . I have noticed distinct improvements I have no hesitation in recommending Kiran’s programme to any leader or aspirant.”

- Sudhakar Ram, Chairman & Group CEO, Mastek

becoming clear. I seldom experience such learning and I want to thank

Kiran for the illumination. Like a steady candle and sometimes like

fireworks, learning came to me, and my path towards understanding

became clear. Revealing. Insightful and Reaffirms the stuff to learn the

The men and women cited in this book evidence keen self-knowledge and project candor and maturity—three essential elements of integrity—in their interactions with others. In return, stakeholders in every category place uncommon trust in their companies and products. Beyond this, stakeholders develop real affection for such companies...the principles of leadership that guide their destinies will be adopted by organizations of every stripe. From the Foreword by Warren Bennis

This book not only challenges capitalism’s traditional marketing paradigm but the very ‘genes’ of capitalism. If any book is going to launch a New Capitalism of Caring, it is this book that redefines great companies as stakeholder value builders, not just shareholder agents.Philip Kotler, SC Johnson Professor of Marketing, Northwestern University

Most people think of convergence in terms of technologies coming together, but Firms of Endearment proves there’s another form of convergence going on. Companies can no longer defend putting profits ahead of winning share of heart because customers and investors increasingly believe one doesn’t come without the other.Ivan Seidenberg, Chairman and CEO, Verizon Communications

“ The effect of the three days is profound! Each and every team member was still enthusing not only about the program, but about their own personal discoveries. The team really needed this. On a personal note, I found this to be one of the best programs ever for me. I also very much enjoyed meeting you, enjoyed our conversations”

-Eddie Holland, when Director, CISCO, Asia- Pacific

“Would love to join (again). Working with Kiran has been a life-changing experience for me. The sincerity of the approach, the willingness to approach reality in its nakedness and rebound from there into the realm of life, the desire to include and involve and engage and inspire anyone participating so that they not just take part but co-create... there is a deep commitment to every one's greatness and this greatness being revealed. ”

- Ludovic Odier www.outdoorinasia.com Singapore - Ludo runs a successful outfit to build teams and manage events, now inspired to build leaders and co-creative ecologies
