ways you will not be able to explain toyourself. In its positive mode, thispower is penetrating; in its negativemode it is castrating--both for yourselfand for others.

The same power allows people to seebehind words, or behind the obviousforms of matter. Thus among my clientsthere are a psychiatrist with Dark Moonconjunct Pluto in XII, and a physicistwith Dark Moon conjunct Moon in Pisces.

No introduction to the Dark Moonwould be complete without at least aword on sex. Her position and aspectsalways reveal what kind of sex life weneed to fulfill ourselves, for She isthe channel between the psyche and bio-logical sex drives. Here again, She is abreaker of false images and She requirescomplete lucidity. (If there are anydoubts about the connection between sexand lucidity, consider the biblicaleuphemism II and he knew her. IIThe DarkMoon makes this expression possiblebecause She breaks down everything thatis not true-to-self while giving one theperception of one Is intangible self.)

DARK MOON and' LILITHThe point selected as the Dark

Moon is the outer focus of an intermed-iate lunar orbit, so called because itis neither the MoonIs mean orbit nor itsfully perturbed instantaneous ellipse, but something in between. This can beregarded as a smooth orbit with somemajor inequalities. It was chosen mainlyfor empirical astrological reasons--itseems to work better in horoscopes thanalternative Dark Moons which may be justas plausible on mathematical grounds.6

The formulas used to locate theouter focus are based on the lunar theo-ry of Simeon-Denis Poisson (1781-1840),which is outdated but useful to us be-cause it makes use of the intermediateorbit. [*11 This solution can no doubtbe refined: but technical-minded peopleare warned that any refinements shouldtake into account the experience andintuition of practitioners.

The tables given here should beadequate for the purpose of doing natalhoroscopes for the 20th century. How-ever, formulas are given as well.

One must first know the longitudeof the mean Dark Moon, DM(m), given by

    154.3295560 + 0.11140405670d- 0.000773850D2 - 0.0000002572oD3

where d is in days since Noon E. T. on31st December 1899 and D is in units of10,000 days from the same date. One thenadds to this the periodic inequality8.644330sin(2a) - 0.652090sin(4a) +

where a = SO - DM(m) and the trailingdots represent negligible terms.Strictly speaking SO should be the

mean longitude of the Sun, but the truelongitude from an ephemeris should beadequate.

TO FIND THE TRUE DARK MOONFirst find the mean Dark Moon as

above, then find the longitude of theSun for the same date and time. (Ideallythe mean, not the apparent, longitude ofthe Sun should be used; however, theadditional trouble does not seem justi-fied since the present table may befurther refined in the future.)

Subtract the longitude of the meanDark Moon from the longitude of the Sun.With this value (S-DM), enter the Table3 and read the corresponding inequalityin degrees, minutes and tenths of aminute. Interpolation may be used whenS-DM is not a whole degree.

The inequality is positive when S-DM is between 0 and 900, negative whenit is between 90 and 1800 Inequalitiesrepeat themselves after 1800, i.e. theinequality for 1810 is the same as for10 and so on.

Example 1. To find the true Dark Moon at0:00 ET on 1st July 1940.

The mean Dark Moon was at 209.6'Aries, as calculated above, and the Sunwas at 8059.71 Cancer. Thus the differ-ence SO - DM = 96050.11 Since thisvalue must be "read upwards" in thetable, i.e. is between 90 and 1800, theinequality is negative. Interpolating(in this case upwards) between 96 and970 we get an inequality of -2020.5'.This value must be applied to the meanDark Moon, thus:True Dark Moon = 20 9.61 - 2020.51

Example 2. To find the true Dark Moon at13: 00 ET on 19th October 1987.

    Here the Sun was at 25036.3 I Libraand SO - DM therefore was equal to205036.31 - 126049.91 = 78046.41 Theinequality is thus +3045.71 andTrue Dark Moon = 126049.91 + 3045.71= 130035.61 or 10035.61 Leo.

Readers will have recognized 19thOctober 1987 as the date of the BlackMonday when the Dow Jones lost 22.6percent in a day. A question comes tomind: if the Moon rules Mondays, doesthe Dark Moon rule Black Mondays? Forwhat it is worth, the Dark Moon was justpast a square with Pluto at 9020 IScorpio when Wall Street opened fortrading that morning. A looser opposi-tion prevailed on 28th October 1929--themiddle of the great 1929 market co1-lapse--when the Dark Moon was at 12057'Capricorn and Pluto at 19037' Cancer:but then the aspect was still forming.

the previous one. This is curiouslyclose to the average distance covered bythe Moon in a day (130.17639 .. ). Thereis surely meat here for anyone interest-ed in new symbolic directions.

THE MYSTERY OF "LILITH"A great deal of confusion surrounds

the terms "Dark Moon". "Black Moon" and"Lilith". which most people use inter-changeably even though they mean quitedifferent thin gs by them. For some.Lilith is an unseen satellite of theEarth. having an ephemeris quite differ-ent from the above tables.

The myth of an invisible satelliteof our Earth was an involuntary contri-bution of the Jesuit astronomer GiovanniBattista Riccioli (1598-1671), an emi-nent scientist who helped to produce themap and nomenclature of the MoonIs sur-face we still use today. In the middleof his career he fell victim to a curi-ous technical mischance. He had orderedparts for a telescope from the DutchmanChristiaan Huygens, the leading opticalscientist of the time. Upon receivingand assembling them he proceeded toobserve the Moon. He soon noticed asmall body that reappeared night afternight. He decided it was a previouslyunknown satellite and eventually pub-lished an ephemeris. Riccioli was widelyadmired for his stunning discovery. Then, after several years, it was no-ticed that an optical defect in thetelescope produced a false planetaryimage when the lens was pointed at acertain angle from the Moon. It trans-pired that this phenomenon could accountfor all of Riccioli Is observations ofthe "new" moon. Riccioli advised all hiscolleagues of the error, and the ques-tion was soon buried in the garbage dumpof forgotten, once-trendy science. [*2 J

So matters stood for nearly threecenturies. Then, in the 1920s, a Kab-balist , self-proclaimed Grand-Master ofa Templar Order, and sometime astrologercalled Robert Ambelain entered thescene. In an attic somewhere in southernFrance, Ambelain found an old copy ofRiccioli Is ephemeris. [*3) You guessedright! He believed all, checked nothing, identified the in visible moon with theLilith of the Kabbala, and produced anephemeris for the 20th century.

Ambelain Is Lilith had little suc-cess in France, partly because it had tocompete with Neroman Is more plausibleand--as it turned out--more useful DarkMoon. For some reason, however, it ap-pealed to certain American astrologerswho published a Lilith ephemeris in theUnited States, reproducing Ambelain Ispositions down to the last decimal.Since the terms "Dark Moon" and"Lilith" are still applied indiscrimin-ately to both points, an attempt hasrecently been made by American, Canadianand French astrologers to distinguishrigorously between them. The term "DarkMoon" should be reserved for the outerfoc us of the Moon Is orbit, while"Lilith" should be reserved for theinvisible body of Riccioli-Ambelainfiliation.

    DATA REPORT:

    TYCHO RECTIFIEDBY TYCHO

    A X E L H A R V E Y

BETTER astrologers there may have been, but none so overwhelming as Tycho Brahe, one of the three or four great scient-ists who have practiced our science ofsciences. Excess was his only rule: onone hand an infinitely patient, hard-working and self-critical observer whobrought astronomy to new levels ofprecision; on the other hand a wrathful, greedy, slanderous man whose silvernose, replacing the flesh lost in aduel, was a testimony to his utter lackof patience or self-control. Tycho' sdeath followed the rule, since it wasaccompanied by bouts of excessive eatingand excessive pain. Fortunately for us,the sad event gives us a clue aboutBrahe's birth hour.

Brahe had settled in Prague, wherethe Emperor Rudolph II had summoned himto be the imperial mathematicus. On13th October 1601 (New Style), he beganto feel sick at a dinner party. The nexteleven days, during which Brahe couldnot urinate, were spent between deliriumand lucid agony: when in the lattercondition, Brahe insisted on eating anddrinking whatever he fancied, despitethe pleadings of his friends. He died inthe morning of 25th October 1601.

Johan n Kepler, who was present, 'setdown a brief account of these events ina notebook where he kept astronomicalrecords. Kepler's notes include the

following remark:"At the onset of this disease the

Moon was in Taurus opposing Saturn & inquadrature to Mars, & Mars was in thevery place which Tycho had determined ashis rising degree." (*1]

On the evenin g of 13th October,Mars was at 14019' Leo (fig. 2--the hourof this map is set arbitrarily at17:45.8 LMT, when Saturn was on theDescendant). Tycho therefore seems tohave rectified his own Ascendant to14019' Leo or to a point very close by.Thanks to his improved instruments, therecorded position of Mars could not bemore than a few arc seconds from theactual place.

Now Tycho is generally thought tohave been born between 9 and 10 a v m , on14th December 1546 (Old Style). This isthe time given by Brahe' s biographer J.L. E. Dreyer (*2]. Lois Rodden, follow-ing suit, used 9:30 local time forBrahe's birth map in The American Bookof Charts; More Notable Nativities had

Unless there has been a misreadingof Kepler's note (e s g , "orientem" for"occidentem") we must conclude thatTycho was really born--or thought he wasborn--half a day earlier or later thanthe accepted time. A footnote inDreyer's biography points to an earlier

    18

birth. "In several places in his writ-ings Tycho alludes to the 13th Decemberas his birthday," writes Dreyer, "butthis is astronomically speaking, count-ing the day from noon . " [*5) Thus wecan rule out a birth after noon on 14thDecember, no matter which Ascendant wechoose.

This leads to the map (fig. 1)for 13th December 1546 (O.S) at 18:24.1UT. The hour is set for a birthplacelocated at 56N 0 by BE O. Knudstrup, the family seat where Tycho was born, isnot listed in my Times Atlas index: Ionly know that Knudstrup was a shortdistance from Helsingborg, Scania, inwhat is now southern Sweden. Perha ps aScandinavian reader can give us bettercoordinates.

Is the Leo horoscope more likeTycho than the Aquarius horoscope? TheAquarian myth would have it that mostgreat star-watchers have been Aquarianavatars; but it is not hard to see trad-itonal Leo traits in this man's charac-ter. Pride, for one: he could not stophimself from addressing his king, Chris-tian IV of Denmark, as almost an equal--not the way to get along on the eve ofthe 17th century I Another trait was hisability to run a large, lively estab-lishment and to choose a number of com-petent lieutenants during his longcareer--more a Leo than an Aquariantalent. Finally, we must remember thatTycho is, after all, a Capricornian with

[*4] The chart appearing in Rodden'sbook has an Ascendant around 50Aqua-rius, but this should be 150Capricorn The discrepancy arises from thechart's having been calculated for9: 30 UT instead of 9: 30 local astron-ornical time.[*5] Dreyer, op , cit., 12n.

Indeed the Ascendant" at14019' Leo, applying to a sesquiquadratewith Mereury within 4', is perfect forone who could not check his tongue.

Here are the angles and Lights for18:24.1 UT on 13th December and for 8:38UT (or 9:30 LMT at 13E 0 longitude) on14th December:

Not surprisingly, the Moon andUranus are conjunct throughout the hoursin question: Uranus is at 190 6' Virgoin both maps. The Moonaspects (under 40orbs) in the two maps are as follows:

    13th p.m. 14th a.m.

Here too the Leo (p. m.) map seemsmore appropriate. While Tycho did notknow how to deal with authority he hadgreat amounts' of it himself: an afflic-ted Jupiter is unlikely. The Uranusconjunction--which I think is related toa critical turn of mind--is applying onthe 13th and separating on the 14th.

There is' no space here to discussTycho's horoscope in detail or to studyevents in his life. His departure fromDenmark, however, makes sense in thelight of the Leo map. After Tycho' s

A couple of months in Copen-hagen. and the increasing coolness ofyoung King Christian. convinced Tychothat he had better try his luck in thesouth. This is why he was to die inPrague.

The last day in Copenhagen was. asbest as can be determined. 2nd June1597; Tycho would never see Denmarkagain. On this day Mars was at 22038'Aries and Uranus at 22012' Aries--thelatter only 5' from the Midheaven of theLeo horoscope.

A final insult came to Tycho in theFall. when he received a rough letterfrom the young king who wrote. in theroyal first person plural: " .. whereasit is now done. we have to leave it soand not to trouble ourselves whether youleave the country or stay in it." Theletter is dated 8th October 1597. [*6]On that date retrograde Jupiter at16005' Gemini was applying to a squareof the Moon in the Leo map (within 0038'at Noon. Copenhagen mean time). The Moonof the Aquarius map gets no such aspect;furthermore the Midheaven of the Aqua-rius map receives a sextile from tran-siting Saturn on that day. an unlikelyoccurrence.

An Ascendant in the middle of Leowas good enough for Tycho: I'll acceptit.

Tiffany was committed to a mentalhospital when she was 13 years old. Sheremained for five months and upon herrelease there was no improvement and herbehavior continues to degenerate.

On 17th November 1972. Tony Baeke-land. heir to the Bakelite fortune.stabbed and killed his mother. Afterspending eight years in a mental hos-pital he was released and within a weekattempted to kill his grandmother with aknife. He committed suicide while inRikers Island prison on 20th March 1981.

All of these young people have onething in common: all have been diagnosedparanoid schizophrenic. The definitionof schizophrenia depends on who is de-fining it. A biochemist would describeit as a brain disorder with a geneticfactor. A psychiatrist would explainthat it is a group of disorders--not asingle illness--and that it is givenanother word called an "affect" to iden-

tify the specific type of schizophrenia. The parents of a child who has

paranoid-affect schizophrenia describethe disorder in terms of behavior andthe effects it has on the entire family.Schizophrenia is a disorder of theyoung; it rarely makes its initialappearance after age 35, and it seemsthat the most severe cases are paranoidswho begin showing symptoms in childhood.Often they are hyperactive children, given to temper tantrums, unable to makeor keep friends, extremely manipulative, and unable to stress. Their familiesoften "walk on eggs" to avoid confronta-tions, thus giving the child even morepower. Although the behavior whendescribed sounds like the behavior of anormal but difficult child, the parentsrealize there is something very differ-ent going on. As the child grows olderthe behavior becomes more bizarre, moreviolent, more out of control. Theybecome masters of manipulation as fami-lies placate them to avoid their out-bursts of rage, their smashing sessions, and vile language.

The natal charts of paranoid schiz-ophrenics accurately depict the kinds ofbehaviors that are displayed by theseyoung people. Keep several things inmind as you view them. Rarely, if ever,do these paranoids use planetary ener-gies in a positive way. As with mostschizophrenics they are above average-to-brilliant in intelligence but thebehavioral problems--the brain disorder--apparently prevents academic growth oraccomplishmen t ,

The effects of the outer planets intheir lives is very pronounced: therebelliousness, bizarre behavior ofUranus; all of Neptune's influencesincluding visual and auditory hallucina-tions, poor self-image, drug and alcoholuse, suicide attempts. and all the self-

undoing techniques for which Neptune isfamous; the manipulative, obsessive andcontrolling behavior of Pluto. Theseyouths develop an uncanny foxiness formanipulating others, often controllingtheir own actions to present a pristineimage to strangers when the occasiondemands it--with the therapist, thepolice or a judge. Of course this"sweet, innocent child II act cannot bemaintained. but it has earned schizo-phrenics the reputation for having asplit personality. As discussed in a previous article[*1], the natal chart can be viewed as adiagram of the brain. It can aIso beviewed as a PET (positive emission tomo-graphy) scan of the brain. A PET scanproduces what appears to be a coloredpicture of t he brain. It does this byshowing the way the brain metabolizesglucose--sugar. Sugar, ruled by Venus,is a fuel for the brain. The brain of aschizophrenic metabolizes glucose dif-ferently from "normal people. Now a smallpercentage of normal people have thedistinctive pattern of the schizophrenicwithout ever developing symptoms of theillness; this raises the question ofwhether they could become schizophrenicif subjected to certain kinds of stress. In any case, however, since the PET scanof a schizophrenic looks distinctive,Venus in the natal chart should alsolook distinctive; it does.

What follows is a list of featuresfound in the charts of paranoid schizo-phrenics together with the way they areexpressed in the individuals' lives. Thedecision on how to classify this infor-mation is arbitrary, as no single

In other charts Mer-cury will occupy the lInd house, Venus'snatural house. In either case that in-terchange will be linked to Uranus or toAquarius or to the XIth house.

Nancy has Taurus on the cusp of theIIrd (Placidus). Venus and helio-Mercuryare both in Aquarius. Helio-Venus andhelio-Mercury are quincunx, orb 112'.

Tiffany has Aquarius on the cusp ofthe IlIrd. Mercury, a natural "3" is inthe lInd house. Helio-Venus is semi-square helio- Uranus.Sheila has Taurus on the cusp ofthe IIIrd house. Geo-Venus is quincunxhelio-Mercury and conjunct geo-Uranus.

Tony has helio-Venus quincunx h-Mercury at 17007' Gemini and h- Uran us at1831' Gemini.

    Venus: Nancy has Venus 2017'Aquariusquincunx h-Pluto 106' Virgo; Tiffany hasVenus Z005' Capricorn square h-Pluto ZO37' Libra; Sheila has h+Venus 519' Virgoconjunct h-Pluto 5044'Virgo; Tony has h-Venus 15053' Capricorn quincunx Pluto 1208'Leo.

This group of connecting planets --Mercury, Venus, Uranus and Pluto--indi-cate problems with interpersonal rela-tionships. Venus rules partnerships. thepsychological effect of the mother;Mercury rules siblings, neighbors. Someastrologers interpret the Venus-Plutoaspect as a controlling, manipulativemother. In all of these lives. however.itwas the child who con trolled themother. As the disease progresses themothers--understanda bly--make many, manyconcessions to keep peace. Of courseeach concession gives the child evenmore Pluto power. It becomes a Catch-22situation.

Tiffany wanted face cream one snowyevening. Her mother had no money in thehouse, did not have the family car andthe store was over a mile away. Tiffanywas so enraged that her mother would notget the cream that she put her fistthrough her bedroom window.

ed to the Ascendant of schizophrenics.Nancy has Pisces rising; Tiffany

has Neptune less than a degree from theAscendant; Sheila has Pisces interceptedin the first house.

    6. MOON-MARS-SATURNAll three girls have a combination

of aspects that, more than any other, point to the paranoid affect schizophre-nia: Moon in hard aspect to Mars, Marsin hard aspect to Saturn. The Mars-Saturn aspect creates a high level ofanger and frustration. Saturn rulessuspicion; paranoia includes feelings ofsuspicion, mistrust. Its link with theanger of Mars finds an emotional outletin the Moon-Mars contact.

    Nancy has h-Mars opposite Moon,exact to the minute. Helio-Mars is con-junct h-Saturn.

tremendous force, screaming, beatingherself repeatedly in the face. Hermother carried her to bed kicking andscreaming, from where she hurled herselfonto the floor, thrashed and flopped forabout twenty minutes until she began tohyperventilate and passed out.

Tiffany, angry at her father, stoodand screamed for over 15 minutes, eyesshut, fists clenched and raised. Shethen went into her bedroom, emergedseveral hours later, a grin on her faceand with two black eyes. She went to thepolice station and tried to file a com-plaint of child abuse against her fatherbut the police, thoroughly familiar withTiffany, took no action. The black eyeswere self-inflicted. Her therapistlabeled the incident a rage.

    * * *Schizophrenia is usually found in

those with above-average IQ's. They areoften diabolically clever. SchizophrenicJohn Hinckley's psychiatrist told hisparents that John was "crazy, notstupid. "

Not all schizophrenic children areparanoids and not all schizophrenicsdevelop symptoms of the disorder inchildhood. It is however, rare to findcases where the initial schizophrenicepisode takes place after the age of 35.In some cases the symptoms progressslowly but other cases are described as"sudden onset." Charts of those whodevelop symptoms in adulthood seem tobe different from those of childhoodschizophrenics. From the data I have itseems that all young schizophrenics havethe Uranus aspect to Jupiter or, in theabsence of that, a Uranus aspect to Sunor Mercury. If heliocentric planets areconsidered, aspects must be very close.Adult-onset charts seem to have

    26

Neptune, in some way, involved with thethird house rather than the Ascendant. They may have Pisces on the cusp of theIIIrd, intercepted in the IIIrd or Nep-tune in the third. Some of the identify-ing aspects are missing in the charts ofadult-onsets, but the aspects are ach-ieved by transiting planets. It alsoseems that a series of significant as-pects from the outer planets--Uranus,Neptune, Pluto--are what trigger thedisorder rather than a single diffi-cult or long-lasting aspect.

All of the observations mentionedin this article are just that, observa-tions. It would be foolhardy to presentfirm conclusions based on only 15charts. There will certainly be chartsin the future which will not conform tothe patterns found in these charts. Ianxiously await the arrival of morecharts and case histories of those whohave been diagnosed schizophrenic.

    LET'S CONSIDER

    A L E X A N V E R R U PE R T I W4it~:

    A R E A C T IO N T O W IN T L E 'S P L U T OThe astrological meaning given to

Pluto stems from the name bestowed onthis planet. with which we have livedconsciously for only 57 years. A greatnumber of astrologers--but not all--havelinked the planet to the sign Scorpiobecause of the mythological meaning ofPluto. Mythological gods and heroes seemto be accepted as the only true sourceof meaning for the planets. partly onaccount of the attention paid to them inJungian psychology. It is true thatcertain astrologers also look to thehistorical events which took placearound the time the three new planetswere discovered during the last threecenturies. Although these correspond-ences are certainly very pertinent. alot depends on the way the astrologerunderstands the events he uses to estab-lish the meaning of the planet in astro-logical terms. This understandin g isinevitably conditioned by the kind ofmental and cultural hang-ups the astro-loger has. And it is rare to find anastrologer who studies history andevents as an expression of the psycho-logical and cyclic evolution of mankind.

It is not enough to open a historybook and note what events happenedaround around the time of the discoveryof Uranus. Neptune and Pluto. Wehave tofit these events into the larger frameof reference of mankind's evolution aswe know of it since archaic times and

also in terms of what is ahead of man-kind according to the "occult" knowledgeavailable. This occult knowledge mustnot be limited to anyone special revel-ation Christian. Hindu. Tibetan or oth-er. There is a common theme runningthrough all particular interpretations;it needs to be re-expressed in a langu-age which the modern mind can under-stand.

So far. Dane Rudhyar is the onlyastrologer to inte rpret astrologicalsymbols in terms of such a whole-view.Modern astrologers do not seem to beinterested in Rudhyar's work--is thisbecause they are not personally inter-ested in the spiritual purpose of evolu-tion? The meaning of life for the vastmajority of people condit to ne d by ourtechnological western civilization is ona very materialistic level. althoughsometimes modified by traditional relig-ious concepts.

The empirical atomistic view of theuniverse today is challenged by the newholistic understanding of phenomena. Theidea of separate objects influencingeach other has been dropped. And the newview of sub-quantic physics goes evenfurther than Einstein dared to go--evenhe was limited by certain paradigmswhich he was unable to dismiss. If wewant to be "scientific" in our approachto astrology. we must realize that theold way of interpreting the relationshipof the Earth and man to the solar systemin terms of a physical. even if subtle.influence exerted by the system on us.is no longer a valid explanation. Theold habit of making entities out ofeverything--planets doing this or that;the Zodiac as a zone of twelve separatesigns each with its own influence. ex-isting somewhere "out there" in theheavens; the Houses as simple reflec-tions in terms of earth experience of

    27

  • 8/4/2019 Considerations Magazine Vol 04-3

    26/72

that Zodiac--that habit still exists asa paradigm in astrological thinking. Wehave not yet assimilated the new view ofthe universe in which everything is inconstant movement and is always relatedto everything else in that universe.

A modern scientific view of ourrelationship to the universe explainsperfectly our astrological corresponden-ces without any need to maintain nostal-gically the concept of separate influen-ces. Since Einstein and the acceptanceof holism, every organism or organizedsystem is a whole and at the same timepart of a greater whole whose rhythmscondition its activity. For astrologica.lpurposes, the solar system is the great-er whole of which the Earth--also awhole-v-is a functional part. The cyclicrhythms manifest in the solar systemtherefore condition the cyclic rhythmsof life on earth. It is not a questionof force against force or influence in amaterialistic sense, but of resonance tothe larger purpose.

Astronomy speaks of our Galaxy andof the existence of many other galaxies, but does not yet know too much aboutthem. Astrologically we have to acceptthe Galaxy--the Milky Way--as the largerwhole for our solar system, even thoughwe do not know much about the rhythmwithin the Galaxy. But the concept ofholism permits us to realize that theserhythms are already stepped down to us,as it were, through the rhythm of thesolar system. We can concentrate on thesolar system, but we must also acceptthat there is a greater reality of whichthe solar system is only a functionalpart.

Beginning with the work of TheodorLandscheidt in Germany, a number ofastrologers have attempted to probe therelationship of the Galaxy to the solarsystem and have introduced the Zodiacal

    28

position of the galactic center intotheir interpretations. In this respectRudhyar was a pioneer, for back in 1936he postulated that the three new planets--Uranus, Neptune and Pluto--were notreally part of our solar system but alink, which may be constituted by fourplanets, between the Galaxy and thesolar system. They refer, symbolically,to the means at our disposal to expandour consciousness beyond the level rep-resented by the solar system to that ofthe Galaxy. In order to tran sform any-thing one must be part of the thing tobe transformed. In this sense, Uranus,Neptune and Pluto are in the solar sys-tem but they are not really a part ofit. Their rhythms enable our solar-sys-tem consciousness to expand and reso-nate to a galactic type of conscious-ness.

The fact that these planets are sonew--after thousands of years at leastduring which mankind was not yet con-scious of their presence--and that wehave become conscious of the existenceof our Galaxy, should make us realizethat humanity, since the 18th century,is making a transition toward some fargreater reality than that which hassubsisted up to now. Itwould be anerror therefore to interpret the meaningof these planets in terms of the estab-lished Saturnian values which dominateour consciousness. They must refer tosomething entirely new, upsetting toSaturnine consciousness and rationallogic.

The usual way to interpret theseplanets is not in terms of what theyessentially represent, but in terms ofour personal Saturn-limited reactions towhat they represent. When we say thatUranus is the unexpected, the revolu-tionary, the inspirer; that Neptunerefers to humanitarian and compassionate

    27/72

beha vior, to the call of the beyond, ofthe mystical or of the illusory; thatPluto refers to dictatorship, power-seeking, collective violence, to groupfanaticism--we are merely tabulating ourhuman and personal reactions to newhuman powers which we do not yet under-stand and which frighten us. In otherwords, these planets do not representelements in our personal psychology thatwe can modify as we can modify our wayof using Mercury, Venus or Mars in ourpersonal behavior. They represent achallenge to transform our personalhabitual ways in terms of a larger andmore inclusive frame of reference. Theyrepresent powers which are now, for thefirst time, at our disposal if we arepersonally evolved enough to be worthyof their use. It is in that sense thatthey have been called "collective" plan-ets or planets of the collective uncon-scious.

In the past, a few particularlyvolved persons--usually as a result ofstrict and difficult initiation dis-

r:ipline--were worthy of making manifest.he spiritual qualities these planets..ymbolize. But today, these planetsoffer their qualities to the whole ofmankind. What was "esoteric " and "oc-cult" in the past, is no longer hiddenand the privilege of a few. Depth andheight psychology, as well as thespreading of occult spiritual knowledge, have made it possible for anyone soinclined to tread the path of transform-ation. Although the powers these planetssymbolize can only be used positively byindividuals who have worked to be worthyof their use, the potentiality of thatuse is now a collective all-human fact.As individuals we can decide to workwith them in order to transform our-selves into something more than simplyhuman, or we can ignore them, continue

to live in terms of the Saturnian socio-cultural values of our society and feelthe impact of what they represent in anegative way as something which upsetsthe status quo and frightens us.Because the potentiality of thesepowers is a collective all-human fact, they appear at collective, national, andsocial levels as well as in our personallives. That is why their mutual rela-tionships are manifested first of all oncollective levels. The collective chan-ges lead progressively to greater col-lective freedom which in turn leads togreater individualizing possibilities. In other words, they can refer to anidentity process on social levels. Thegreater collective freedom permits us toact individually as an astrologer, ahealer, a gay, a feminist, and so on.But at the same time the process revealsthat our individual identity is onlyreal when we fulfill a function in thegreater whole of society. Our individualfunction as astrologers becomes morecomplete as we work to show that astro-logy is of value on collective levels.

All this tries to show that thereis not only a human effort to evolvetowards something, there is also anattempt of the greater wholes whichencompass us to reveal ever more of thegreater reality they represent for us.When the three outer planets are inmutual aspect. this astrological situ-ation begs us to understand the need fornew values (not modified old ones) lead-ing us to integrate ourselves as personsand also as nations into a global human-ity. They are the challenge to make usaware that our human destiny is notlimited to our solar system but mustresonate to the Galaxy. The solar systemis good symbol for the integrated humanpersonality or nation, with its tendencyto be proud of its separate being.

    29

    28/72

sometimes in a solar autocratic manner. The integration of the personality, however, leads from the state of a dom-inant ego to the realization of thecentral Self. The paradox is that thisexperience of the central Self leads toa further experience: that of the Selfbeing only a particular aspect of agreater Self--the, greater whole of whichone is a part. "Astrologically, thismeans that when we experience the fullmeaning of the central Sun we realizethat our Sun is only one star amongbillion s of other stars in the Galaxy. As the Ancient Wisdom has always said:the destiny of man is to be more thanman; he is to be the conscious intermed-iary between spirit and matter; he mustintegrate fully within himself the es-sence of the two worlds; he must spir-itualize matter and materialize spirit.

The mutual aspects of these threeremote planets, therefore, refer tonothing personal. They are an overallchallenge to humanity and to the Earth. As persons and nations, we react to thischallenge in personal and national waysaccording to our lights. The situationscreated by how we react simply revealour weaknesses, our incomplete under-standing of the purpose of the universein which we live. We respond to theoverall challenge according to how itmodifies our personal or national de-sires. The greater our understanding ofthe overall purpose of our presence onEarth, the more positive will be ourreaction to the call of these planets oftransformation.

The aspects these three outer plan-ets make with Jupiter and Saturn havesocial implications. They challerige usto act in society, in groups or as na-tions in a manner which goes beyond ourdesire for security, prestige andwealth; in a manner which leads to

    30

greater abundance for all. They there-fore challenge all the existing ethical, moral, socio-cultural values which con-dition our usual behavior. They createsituations which reveal our limitations.Through the true individuals in ourmidst, they also suggest what we coulddo to go beyond these limitations andact consciously in terms of a greaterinclusivety. We have made of persons, nations and races absolute entities eachwanting to do his or her or its ownthing, each trying to assert itselfagainst all the others. The fact ofman's commonhumanity, of our one humanroot, has been forgotten. Therefore wehave no vision of a common human futurewe must consciously create together. The differences between races, nations, sexes and persons are not absolute dis-tinctions but functional differentia-tions of the roles all have to playwithin the larger whole--Earth and hu-manity.

Were we fully aware of this commonhuman future that we must create con-sciously together, we would create liv-ing conditions all over the globe whichwould solve radically our current prob-lems of over-population, famine, secur-ity, and the pollution of the Earth'sair, water and soil--and of our ownphysical bodies. As we are not consciousof such a commonfuture, Uranus, Neptuneand Pluto, and their cyclic relation-ships to each other and to Jupiter andSaturn, will seem to create ever-worsen-ing conditions until, simply in order tosurvive, we will do that which is neces-sary. Before then we will have to ex-perience much hardship and suffering, which could have been avoided had moreof us been aware of what is really atstake--and ideally it has always beenthe task of the astrologer to revealwhat is at stake at any given time.

    29/72

When these three planets aspect thepersonal planets in a chart, the native, whether he likes it or not, will beinvolved in a destiny that requires thetransformation of his personal valuesand beha vior. These aspects, as I havesaid, do not "prove" that the new plan-ets are part of our personal make-up.The situations linked to them reveal howwe perceive the challenge to be 0::1erthan personal. I don't mean that onehas to be "altruistic" or anything likethat, but that the personal problemslinked to' personal planets in aspect toUranus, Neptune and Pluto are only per-sonal in obliging the person to go be-yond his ego and the things of which heis conscious, and to accept that thereis a larger dimension to existencebeyond anything he knows or feels. Itisa challenge to let the greater wholereveal--without the ego blocking theway--that larger dimension, that greaterpotentiality.

Our difficulty in relating to theseouter planets comes entirely from ourfear of being no longer in control ofwhat is happening. This is particularlyevident when Pluto aspects the personalplanets. We want to fit what happens.'to a known mold and so, as astrolog-~J"S, we speak of these three planets asbe mg "higher octaves" of personal plan-ets. We are afraid of the new, we fightit or seek for a explanation of what ishappening today from the past--by way ofkarma and past lives--or from tradition-al spiritual doctrines. We cannot letGod, symbolically speakin g, show some-thing concerning Himself that we do notknow already. We repeat the past all thetime.

If one accepts that these planetsrefer to a more than personal dimensionof being--which is an idea contrary tothat of Prier Wintle--then there is no

reason to give them a "rulership", inthe traditional sense of rulership, ofthe signs of the Zodiac. Today the Zodi-ac should no longer be the supreme pointof reference for what the ancients con-sidered planetary activity to he. It issimply an expression of the yearly orb-ital movement of the earth around thesun--though spatially speaking it couldbe considered as the "aura" of theEarth. In any case it is not a celestialbut a terrestrial factor. As orbitalmotion is a collective motion, in thatall planets participate in it, it cannotrefer to individual factors but only toall those all-human qualities and ener-gies at the disposal of a particularperson, because he is human. The signsrefer to phases in the cycle of evolu-tion of humanity. They show us whatqualities or energies are at our dis-posal in order to become an individual-ized human being. But the phases of theindividualization process are to bereferred to the Houses. According to thesigns found on the twelve cusps of thechart, the astrologer can know whichqualities and energies of human natureshould be used during each phase(House) in the individualization pro-:cess.

As this process must be a consciousone, it is logical to relate the sevenplanets of the conscious to the twelvesigns. It is not logical to assume thatbecause there are twelve signs theremust be eventually twelve planets. Thesigns are not pre-existing entities inthe sky, but are man-made divisions of acyclic process that has been dividedinto twelve phases for spiritual andnumerological reasons. For these samereasons each of the planets of the con-scious was related to two signs. Thisdid not apply to the Sun and the Moon asthese two bodies were regarded as the

    31

  • 8/4/2019 Considerations Magazine Vol 04-3

    30/72

IILights, II two aspects of the basic life-force which animates everything.

It rnay seem logical to give therulership of a second sign progressivelyto each of the new planats , As the rul-ership order was established accordingto the position of each planet, from theSun outwards to Saturn, the primaryrulers hips go from Leo to Capricorn.Modern astrologers have thought that thefirst of the newly-discovered planets,Uranus, should be given Aquarius (thesecond sign of Saturn) and that thesecond discovered planet, Neptune, should take over Pisces (Jupiter Is sec-ond sign) and... But here the logicbreaks down: for, instead of attributingPluto to Aries, the next sign in se-quence, most astrologers for mythologi-cal reasons attribute this planet to thesign Scorpio. The original symmetry hasbeen broken.

But if the reader refuses, as didMarc Edmund Jones and Dane Rudhyar, togive rulerships in the traditional senseto these three remote planets. the wholesubject of rulership can be given a newmeaning in accordance with the modernview of the universe and our place init.

The traditional relationships ofthe traditional planets. Sun and Moon tothe signs are a reflection of the easeor difficulty anyone has in adaptinghimself to the socio-cultural values invogue at the time--values which reflectmanIs conscious way of adapting to theworld as it appears to the ego. We mustnot forgot that the development of anego is historically a recent phenomenon,as is the establishment of personalhoroscopes for anyone. In older days, charts were drawn up of kings and princ-es in order to understand the collectivedestiny under their rule. People werenot ego-conscious as they are today but

    32

were simply specimens of human nature--and later, of their society. There wasnothing truly individual in their beha-vior, and there is nothing truly indivi-dual either in the behavior of the vastmajority of people today. The process ofindividuation was not available beforethe arrival of J'u n g , during this cen-tury.

As long as people are specimens oftheir society and culture, the positionof the planets in their own signs. intheir exaltation, fall or exile, is apertinent index of the ease or diffi-culty of a person Is adjustment to soci-ety. As long as one wants to succeed interms of such conscious. traditionally-accepted ways of doing, feeling andthinking, it is important to have theplanets in IIfriendly , signs: life can bea problem when they are in "mirmcal"signs.

But today there is a strong "courr-t.er+c ult ur e" movement of which astrologyis a part. Planets in their detriment orexile, although they suggest in- thefirst place that the person cannot fitin easily, suggest also that he may notwant to fit in. Because he does not wantto be a specimen of his society, it willbe more easy for him to break away andindividualize himself, open himself tothe transforming impact of Uranus, Nep-tune and Pluto.

This means that the value of ruler-ships has become very relative in chartinterpretation. Instead of the astro-loger saying that a person will have ahard or an easy time because the planetsare in certain signs, he must invert theprogram and interpret the chart in termsof what it is the person wants to do.The chart no longer says what will bebut shows which qualities or energies(signs) should be used by the psycho-logical function symbolized by the

planet if one wants to fulfill the realpurpose of one Is being on earth at thistime. Whatever the sign--good, bad orindifferent according to tradition--thequalities and energies of that sign mustbe used because they are necessary forthe accomplishment of one Is destiny.

Earlier I stated that Uranus, Nep-tune and Pluto can be said to symbolizethe triune path of transformation. Thismeans that they are a call to go beyondthe known, beyond what the majority ofpeople think or feel is worth-while.Each one of them challenges us in adifferent way and in a different part ofour conscious bein g. As I am a firmbeliever in a purposeful universe and inthe holistic relationship of smallerwhole to greater whole, I do not believethat these three planets were discoveredby chance, nor that the order in whichthey were discovered is accidental. Eachnewly-discovered planet was further awayfrom the Sun than the preceding one--though Pluto offers us rich symbolismbecause the it cuts the orbit of Neptunearound the time of its perihelion and istherefore nearer the Earth then. Thefact remains that Uranus was discoveredfirst and can therefore symbolize thefirst phase in the process of transform-ation.

The first phase is inevitably achallenge to the authority of thll con-scious ego, set in his ways and surethat he is the center of his universe. And ifl psychological astrology, Saturnsymbolizes the structure of the ego, that which makes us say "L'", feelingdifferent from other "Ins. ThereforeUranus challenges Saturn. He opens theego to new vistas if the ego is at allopen. The negative meanings given -tothis relationship come from tbe general-ly negative way in which our egos re-spond to any challenge to change and

grow. They refer to our reactions, notto the meaning of Uranus.

The second phase is Neptunian andthe basic challenge of this planet is tothe way we use Jupiter in our lives. Inany basic transformation of our way ofbeing in life, we must decide not to beego-centered in our social and profess-ional activities. We must learn to joinour forces with other people and groupsin order to produce something whichmeets the true needs of others and ofsociety, not simply to earn more moneyand power, generally at the expense ofpeople who are weaker than we are. Wemust dissolve all feelings of beingbetter and more important than others.

The third phase is Plutonian. Thebasic challenge of this planet is to theway we express our energies and qual-ities through Mars. Pluto depersonaIizesour desires, teaches us to act in termsof the greater contribution to life andsociety we can make if we have openedourselves to the message of Uranus be-forehand and dissolved all our barriersat the call of Neptune.

The reader may noticed our suggest-ion that these three planets of trans-formation are not modified by the Zodi-acal signs in which they are placed, butinitiate a transformation in the way weuse the energies and qualities theyrepresent. They address themselves tothe planets of the conscious. Uranuschallenges Saturn, not only in Aquariusor Capricorn but in whatever sign Saturnis -placed. Or conscious reliance on thequalities and energies of the sign Sat-urn is in ,in order to assert our person-al differ-ence and independence, is goingto be challenged if and when Uranusaspects Saturn natally or by t r-an sit ,Wherever Uranus is natally or by tran-sit, indicates an area where somethingSaturnian must be overcome. Uranus is

    33

the call of the greater Self to theconscious ego.

In the same way Neptune challengesJupiter, not only in Pisces or Sagittar-ius but wherever Jupiter is placed. AndPluto challenges Mars, not only in Scor-pio but also in Aries and wherever Marsis found in the chart. Astrologers linkPluto mainly to Scorpio and not to Ar-ies, the other Martian sign, simplybecause in our egocentric society thechallenge to rebirth is felt mainlyduring the Scorpio phase of the Zodiaccycle. We are not yet aware enough ofwhat rebirth means, of the possibilityof it being an origin of something new, totally new and more inclusive, to ac-cept the reI a tionship of Pluto withAries. We react negatively and egocen-trically to the Plutonian challenge; wewant to remain an ego-in-control andtherefore Pluto aspects seem to refer todictatorships, power politics, manipu-lation and sexuality. If we decided notto control Pluto situations, but to letthe experiences linked to its aspectslead us to a deeper understanding ofourselves, of others--and of human na-ture--without judging these experiencesaccording to established moral and ethi-cal principles, then Pluto could revealto us something which our puny imagina-tions are incapable of doing.

Pluto is deemed to be a IIpersonal IIplanet because it challenges Mars andVenus which are the personal planetsconnected with our most intimate nature. As this intimate nature can now expressitself more openly in the sexual sphere,Pluto is linked to sexual experiences ofall kinds. We forget that the energythat we put into sexual experiences canalso be put into other activities. Thereis one libido, one prana. We decide, according to our psychological evolu-tion, on what level we will concentrate

our energies. As most people still liveat the biological and socio-culturallevel, it is on those levels that theyliberate their energies and the chal-lenge of Pluto to that use at thoselevels results in all those negativethings astrologers say are due to Pluto.

Pluto wants us to come to gripswith essentials. Its aspects challengeus to drop our allegiance to the super-ficialities of life, to appearances, andallow the greater depths of being toexpress themselves through our consciousbehavior. This can be a cathartic pro-cess. People panic when everything towhich they are attached, that givesmeaning to their lives, is strippedaway. All reactionary movements in poli-tics--including gangsterism and totali-tarianism--feed on fear. Nations try toreturn to some old form of tribal unitywhich must be protected at all costsfrom outside influence. Gangsters feedon the disintegration of our social sys-tems. Many of our plutocrats became richthrough exploiting black market condi-tions, drug addiction, and the sale ofwar material.

But such negative Pluto conditionsexist because we are afraid to go for-ward to the new. The resurgence of reli-gious fundamentalism is a Saturnianreaction in the face of the presentchallenge to go forward and create a newsociety.

I don It know where Prier Wintlegets his idea that the political leftand communism are under Uranus symbol-ism. Does he mean to say that Plutorepresents the political right becausehe believes Hitler to be an expressionof Pluto and therefore Nazism also?Because be believes Pluto rules Scorpio,Hitler must have Scorpio rising to provehis theory. For many astrologers Scorpiois the trash can of the Zodiac. In the

1930s, when Hitler's birth time was notknown, prominent astrologers came for-ward with the argument that, because bewas a nasty man, he must have Scorpiorising! It is a pity that Wintle does notseem to have read Rudhyar' s book nAstro-logical Timing". He would not then mixup Uranian and Neptunian values as hedoes. He attributes to Uranus whatshould be related to the Uranus-Neptunecycle which began in 1821.

The Uranian 18th century foughtagainst the social and cultural formsestablished by Saturn: the concepts of"kingship by divine right" and of aunion of State and Church; againstsocial privileges, Church dogmatism andthe cosmic mechanism of Descartes. Ura-nus wants to open Saturn to a principleof order more universal than that of theClassical era. The Uranian revolutionsled to the establishment of individualhuman rights. Such rights made it pos-sible for the members of the "proletari-at" to fight for their individual rightsas human beings.

I agree with Wintle when he saysthat Uranus "acts" mainly on mentallevels in terms of ideas or inspira-tions, because it is through the devel-opment of the mind--as opposed to thefeelings--that man can individualizehimself. But Wintle does not seem tomake a distinction, when referring tocollective developments, between soci-eties like our western democracies inwhich individual rights are paramount, and the communist countries where thestate is paramount and individuals haveno rights at all, as individuals.

The polarity of individual andcollective is universal in its manifest-ations. The split of the world into twocamps is an expression of humanity'sincapacity to integrate them. In every

society the needs of individuals and ofthe society should be integrated harmon-iously. This is far from being the case. The exaggerated accent on the individualin America has led to the exaggeratedaccent on the collective in Russia, andthe two exaggerations are afraid of andtherefore ready to fight each other. Ifour democracies were real democracies, there would not be social conditionswhich breed communism. America, insteadof basing her foreign policy on a reac-tion against communism, would thenideally create such a democratic societywhich would serve as an example othernations would be eager to copy.

The expression of this polarity ofindividual and collective in terms ofthe type of social integration adoptedshould, I think, make us rea lize thatUranus symbolizes western democracy andNeptune the communist state. Neptune, asI see it, is always an expression of thepressure of the collectivity upon theindividual. The feeling of unity over-comes that of separateness and differ-ence. The Communist Manifesto, which wasmirrored by the Bahai attempt to orga-nize a "world order" on the basis of a"divine manifestation", coincided withthe discovery of Neptune. The industrialrevolution, based on the power of steamand later oil, is also a Neptunian phe-nomenon. It dissolved what the powerrepresented by Uranus had shattered andbroken through.

Unfortunately, every action ofuniversalizing forces has a reaction;and it tends to crystallize under theinertial resistance to change of Saturn-based privileges. The universalizingNeptune force was distorted by Saturnian-type nations into national efforts togain world power through colonialism. The individualistic Uranian force per-mitted powerful individuals to corner

the new energies released by the indus-trial revolution and to set up a newclass. based on money power capable ofdominatin g the sta te , This led to themodern form of class distinction withUranus representing the "haves" andNeptune the "have not s", The proletariatbecame the field for the Neptunian for-ces which tend to level down and reduceevery differentiated structure to a kindof liquid and amorphous chaos. Neptuneis also related to all forms of glamourand deception. The cynical use of lies.treachery. spies and subversion is Nep-tunian. Communism is a religion of ma-terialism and the USSR was born with aconjunction of Saturn and Neptune.

World War I--IIthe war to end allwarsll--was a Neptunian war which de-structured societies and left the worldin a chaos. Pluto began to rear his headin the conditions Neptune had establish-ed. Dictatorships in Italy. Germany andSpain appeared in answer to the subcon-scious yearning of the mass mind forsolidity and security. But they were anegative IIshadow" manifestation of thePluto force. Because people are notforward-looking enough. their fear ofchaos made them seek a compulsive gang-like subservience to darkly powerfultotalitarian leaders. Wherever Plutoseems negative. there we can see thatits action is based on the fear producedby Neptunian developments; in this re-spect Americans could ponder on theirpresent world attitude based on thesocial fear of communism. It could leadto a Plutonian nuclear war.

If we accept that Uranus, Neptuneand Pluto act as a triune process. Plu-to Is activity is determined by the na-ture of the Uranus-Neptune relationship.Pluto externalizes the type of relation-ship which exists between the spiritualand social-cultural values presented by

the leader of the nation and the socialcommunity out of which these leadershave emerged. IIWhere there is no vision.the people perish. 11 The tragedy ofmodern history is in the mediocrity ofthe leaders our societies choose. If theNeptunian collective mentality of asociety. class, or group has readilyopened itself to the new vision providedby its creative personages. Pluto willhe able to act towards the concreterealization of the vision. But if Nep-tune has brought very little or nothingexcept fallacies, glamour. confusion anddegeneration. Pluto will reduce every-thing to chaos or integrate people intosome sort of totalitarian structure.

Mussolini and Hitler were born.like manyother people. at the time ofthe Neptune-Pluto conjunction. The 500-year cycle of relationship of these twooutermost planets is the most importantindication. at the present time. oftrends affecting humanity as whole.People who were born at the end of thelast century. with this conjunction intheir charts, were capable of resonatingto these new trends. Hitler and Mussoli-ni so resonated but in terms of ancientmodes of social integration. The newfuture for them was the re-establishmentof ancient forms. What some people con-sider their personal power as individu-als was in reality the power of thearchetype which possessed them. Onecannot have social power without in someway incarnating the needs or the desiresof the people. or of a momentary major-ity of the people: this goes for anypolitical leader. not only for dic ta-tors.

cannot see why the leadershipprinciple comes from Pluto. There havebeen leaders throughout history. beforePluto existed consciously for astro-logers. Leadership as such can mean many

things and depends on the quality and someone who does what others do or have

the ideals of the leader. What mattersin any given context is not the leader, but the all-human, or national or socialor religious or personal ideals in thelight of which one tries to be a leader. The leader can be a fanatical medium forsome archetype to which he has submittedhimself psychologically, or he can be anespecially evolved person, spirituallyspeaking, capable of transmitting "God ISwill"

Wintle does not use the word "indi-viduality" in the strict psychologicalsense. He is not alone in this as manypeople refer to individuals, psycho-logically speaking, when they strictlymean "persons" with the potentiality ofbecoming individuals. A true individualhas gone through the individuation pro-cess or its equivalent and has contactedthe true Self. But most people callthemselves individuals when they areonly egos masquerading as individuals.Egos become "individualistic", not indi-viduals. They went to do "their thing"in society without any sense of partici-pating as a functional unit in thatsociety. They see nothing superior totheir "individualism" and mistake it forindividuality. They therefore accentuatethe individual pole of the individual-collective duality at the expense of thecollective pole to which they give anegative value.Nobody is born an individual. Weare born as human beings, conditioned byrace, nation, local climate, family andthe existing socio-cultural values andlanguage. We become persons when weassume a function in society. We canbecome individuals if we emerge from thepsychic womb of our socio-cultural para-digms, and introduce something new andworthwhile to society and humanity. Anindividual is an origin, not merely

done in just an original manner. He doesnot glorify his differences" what heconsiders his uniqueness, but realizesthat the development of his individual-ity has meaning in terms of what he cangive to the collective pole in all ex-perience. He has become a consciousintermediary allowing for the manifesta-tion of the greater whole. The individu-alist wants to separate himself from thecollective; the individual relates him+self creatively to the collective, someof whose needs he can fulfill. The para-dox is that he becomes "impersonal"--heis no longer centered on his uniqueness--by attempting to fulfill his "dharma"(the purpose of his being) through sig-nificant acts.

The impersonality of the communistsystem is not really impersonality. Itis simply the depreciation of personalvalues and desires in relation to thewill of the collectivity. It is thedominance of the collective pole overthe individual pole.

Individuality does not exist in avoid or in an abstract sense. It is theexpression of a certain form of rela-tionship established with the collectiveelements in human experience. The Chi-nese Yin-Yang symbolism is an expressionof the individual-collective polarity ineverything. And the Chinese knew verywell that even the most exaggeratedacce
