The Practice

Considered design inc is a studio based design practice specialising in the creation of landscape defined by the process of conceiving, detailing, constructing and enjoying. Our approach is determined not by any particular aesthetic or style but by each project bringing with it new opportunities to explore a continuously evolving vocabulary of ideas. For us landscape architecture is a language that is spatial, elemental and complex. Innovation is the vehicle for us to find new ways of reading, understanding and making.

A competition win with Penoyre and Prasad Architects to extensively refurbish a series of 1960’s school buildings and the external spaces. A new campus development and learning facility for teenagers and young adults. The first phase includes pedestrian linkages with the town centre, a new forecourt, bicycle storage and parking facilities all located on top of a ground water filtration and controlled discharge system. A fluid form responds to the curving curtain of the building facade whilst lazily directing meandering foot traffic to and from classroom and town.

An opportunity to work with the staff and pupils of an inner london primary school resulted a series of playground interventions based around the principals of outdoor learning through play activity. A grid of Red Maples announces seasonal change and a canopy beneath which plays are acted out. Bespoke timber furry box furniture functions as stage, dancing platform, picnic bench and a gathering place for parents to interact and gossip. Florescent resin bound aggregates provide porous surfaces and maths classes where angles are measured and lines are plotted. A walled playground is transformed into an active learning environment and participant in a fully active school curriculum.

Howe Dell School is the first fully sustainable school in the UK and features include wind turbines, solar panels, heat stores, water recycling and sedum roofs. It is also the first building in the world to benefit from interseasonal heat transfer, a new technology that captures solar energry from a pipe array embedded in the surface of the playground. The energy is then stored in thermal banks beneath the insulated foundation of the building and released to heat the school during winter.
