The celebration of the Christ-event, which we again remember as we approach the time of Easter, represents the very essence of our Christian faith: that Jesus came as the fulfilment of Old Testament prophecies and died a substitutionary death (in our place, as our substitute) and was raised to life again by the power of the Holy Spirit according to the Scriptures (see 1 Cor. 15:3-8; Rom. 8:34; Col. 1:13-14). The vast importance of Easter for Christians and its implications for the world cannot be overstated – it is good news worth sharing. Yet, like with so many Christian celebrations, are we intentional about the means of rightly celebrating this important ‘holiday’? In what ways will your family celebrate Easter in a way that honours God and that disciples your children in the faith? Consider what Easter could mean for each of us in three key aspects of our lives: within our local churches, within our families, and within our personal lives. Celebrating Easter with Your Local Church

The Passover was a community event for Jewish people that was celebrated in unity. Similarly Easter should be seen as a community event and your family should find ways of joining in your local church’s services and celebrations. We need to be intentional about fighting our culture’s inclination toward individualism and heed the necessity of our own local church involvement (Heb. 10:25; 13:17; Acts 2:42; Eph. 4:12). This could be a meaningful time for your family and if you’ve not been to church in a while, this is a good time to connect! Most churches are geared to celebrate Easter and will help you and your family to rediscover the good news of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Celebrating Easter with Your Family

Celebrating Easter as a family is important and I would suggest that you be intentional about recapturing the meaning of Easter in our consumer-driven culture and think of creative ideas together. Perhaps consider setting aside time to work through a Bible reading plan during the Passion Week; or asking each member of the family to pray at mealtimes around the themes of Easter. Whatever you do, cultivate your family’s sense of unity with focused time together without any interruptions from social media or technology.

Celebrating Easter Personally

As you participate in your church’s Easter activities and celebrate meaningfully as a family, it may be good practice to carve out some time to personally assess your own relationship with the Lord and help your kids to do the same, reflecting on the meaning of Easter and its implications for your own life. As much as Easter is a community time, it is also a time for personal reflection, repentance, forgiveness, restoration and even restitution. Lee Strobel reminds us that Jesus Christ did not come into this world to make bad people good. Rather, Jesus came into this world to make dead people live. May we remember the truth of John 11:25: “Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.’”
