F-T HORSES OF RACING AGE SALE FILLS NICHEBy Ron Mitchell
When Fasig-Tipton tweaked the North American
equine sales calendar four years ago by intro-
ducing its July selected horses of racing age sale, it
proved successful from the outset, with seven-figure
sale-toppers each of the first two years.
Once again a healthy mix of proven stakes win-
ners and well-bred racing and future breeding
prospects are among the more than 100 horses
cataloged for this year’s edition that begins at 5 p.m.
EDT July 11.
This year’s HRA sale is the preamble to Fasig-Tip-
ton’s July selected yearling sale; from 2013-15, it
followed the yearling auction on the same day.
The 55 horses sold in the first sale that grossed
$5,819,000 included sale-topper Starship Truffles,
bought by Castleton Lyons for $1 million. A year later
Three Chimneys Farm, agent, bought Bedford Lane
for $1,075,000 to top the auction when 109 horses
grossed $8,426,000 in a sale highlighted by the dis-

persal of horses owned by prominent owner/breeder
Eugene Melnyk.
Consignors say the horses of racing age sale fills
a void in the marketplace. Other than the spring
2-year-olds in training sales and summer-fall yearling
sales, there were no major public auction options for
sellers until the fall, when the sales of older horses
and breeding stock are held.
“It gives an efficient way for people in the middle
of the year to move product to generate cash flow,”
said Frank Taylor, sales director for Taylor Made
Sales Agency that has the largest consignment.
Taylor Made consigns several of the top pros-
pects, including Stormy Lucy, a grade I-winning
daughter of Stormy Atlantic cataloged as Hip 430.
Among the sale’s supplemental entries was grade III
winner Donegal Moon, whom Taylor Made consigns
as Hip 508.
Included in Taylor Made’s consignment are 23
horses—consisting of mares and foals, yearlings,
2-year-olds, and horses of racing age—from the
dispersal of Elisabeth “Betty” Alexander’s Eutrophia
Farm.
“Regardless of how the industry is going right
now, they are still running races and people still want
racehorses,” said Mike Recio, a partner in South Point
Sales who has two-time stakes winner Fear the Cow-
boy (Hip 468) among its Fasig-Tipton group.
Among the more intriguing entrants are two well-
bred War Front colts campaigned by the Coolmore
Stud connections of Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith,
and Mrs. John Magnier. They are being offered
through the Kingswood Farm consignment of Roder-
ick Wachman.
War Envoy, consigned as Hip 441, is a multiple
group-placed colt out of the stakes-winning Elusive
Quality mare La Conseillante; his third dam is cham-
pion Winning Colors. The Great War, Hip 435, is a
stakes winner in Ireland from the female family of
grade I winner Zensational. BH

TOM'S READY TO SPENDTHRIFT UPON RETIREMENTBy Blood-Horse Staff
Tom's Ready, winner of the Woody Stephen Stakes
(gr. II) in June at Belmont Park, will stand at Spend-
thrift Farm upon his retirement following an agree-
ment with owner GMB Racing to acquire the breed-
ing rights to the son of More Than Ready.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to stand
such a talented and progressive colt as Tom's Ready,
and we're appreciative to Mr. and Mrs. (Tom) Benson
and the entire GMB Racing team," said Ned Toffey,
general manager at Spendthrift. "Tom's Ready is one
of the best-looking colts we've ever seen by More
Than Ready, who is emerging as an important sire of
sires, both in America and Australia.
"Tom's Ready is incredibly sound and versatile,
and we believe his Woody Stephens performance is
just the beginning of a big future ahead."
Trained by Dallas Stewart, Tom's Ready will contin-
ue to be campaigned by owner GMB Racing through-
out the remainder of the colt's racing career, before
retiring to Spendthrift to take up stud duty. GMB
Racing is owned by Gayle Marie Benson, wife of New
Orleans Saints (NFL) and New Orleans Pelicans (NBA)
owner Tom Benson.
"In 2014, at the urging of my
husband, Tom, we decided to
buy some yearlings, and our
first purchase was Tom's Ready
at the Fasig-Tipton sales in Sara-
toga," Gayle Benson said. "We
are very grateful to Dallas Stew-
art, who has brought him along
nicely into the horse he is today.
From the Hopeful Stakes (gr. I)
as a 2-year-old, to the Kentucky
Derby (gr. I), and most recently
the Woody Stephens Stakes at
Belmont, Tom's Ready has pro-
vided me and my husband with
great joy.
"We would also like to thank
everyone at Spendthrift, espe-
cially Mr. Hughes, Ned (Toffey),
and Mark (Toothaker), for be-
lieving in our horse. He still has
productive racing days ahead,
and we are excited about the future—on the track
and at Spendthrift—for Tom's Ready."
Tom's Ready has a 2-4-0 record from 11 ca-
reer starts and $577,220 in earnings. His resume
includes runner-up finishes this year in the Twin-
spires.com Louisiana Derby (gr. II) and Lecomte
Stakes (gr. III), both at Fair Grounds Race Course &
Slots, and last year's Street Sense Stakes at Churchill
Downs.
As a 2-year-old, Tom's Ready broke his maiden
by 3 1/4 lengths at Churchill and was fifth in the
Hopeful at Saratoga before finishing a fast-closing
second in the Street Sense. At age 3, he qualified for
the Kentucky Derby after runner-up performances
in the Louisiana Derby and Lecomte.
Tom's Ready returned to one turn in the sev-
en-furlong Woody Stephens on the Belmont Stakes
(gr. I) undercard, winning by 1 1/4 lengths in 1:21.38.
He is being pointed for the $500,000 King's Bishop
Stakes (gr. I) Aug. 27 at Saratoga Race Course.
Purchased by Stewart and GMB Racing for
$145,000 at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select
yearling sale, Tom's Ready was bred by Black-
stone Farm from the Broad Brush mare Goodbye
Stranger, a half sister to stakes winners Lemonlime
and Miss Moses. BH

FLORIDA FIRST-CROP SIRES BRING VALUEBy Alastair Bull
Four Florida-based sires look to make their
marks at the Fasig-Tipton July sale with their
first yearling crops.
All four—Soldat, Prospective, Poseidon's War-
rior, and Corfu—went to stud in 2014 with stud
fees of $6,500 or less, and all saw more than 50
mares in their first season.
Soldat has the most representation at the July
sale: two fillies and two colts.
The son of War Front—Le Relais (Coronado’s
Quest) showed good speed at 2, winning the With
Anticipation Stakes (gr. IIIT) and running second
in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IIT). At 3 he
won the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes
(gr. II) over future grade I winners To Honor and
Serve and Shackleford.
Retired to Woodford Thoroughbreds near
Reddick, Fla., for a $5,000 fee, Soldat serviced 124
mares in his first season, and has 89 foals. So far
he’s had seven weanlings and seven yearlings sell
at auction for an average of $12,964.
A $40,000 weanling at the Keeneland No-
vember sale was the highest-priced and will be
offered again at the July sale, consigned as Hip
10 by Select Sales as agent for Mauk One et al.
The colt is out of Revengefulpleasure (Stephen
Got Even), a sister to grade III winner Time to Get
Even.
Three Soldat yearlings on offer have not been
to auction before. Hip 62 and Hip 226, both from
the Woodford Thoroughbreds consignment, are
closely related. Hip 62 is out of Storm Mesa, a
grade II winner by Sky Mesa, and Hip 226 is out
of Gale Warning, an unraced Unbridled’s Song
daughter of Storm Mesa.
The remaining Soldat yearling, Hip 201, is a
colt consigned by Darby Dan Farm as agent. He is
out of Doloris (Yes It’s True), a winning daughter
out of grade II winner Private Light.
Like Soldat, Prospective stood for $5,000 from
his Florida base, Ocala Stud.
A son of Malibu Moon and the stakes-winning
Awesome Again mare Spirited Away, Prospec-
tive won seven of his 17 starts. Six were stakes,
including the Grey Stakes (Can-III) as a 2-year-old,
and the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) and Ohio Derby
(gr. III) as a 3-year-old.
He had 63 foals from his first crop, and to
date, 10 have been at auction, fetching an aver-
age price of $17,800.
One of those is the sole Prospective yearling
to go before buyers at the July sale. Originally
bought for $17,500 at the OBS October sale, Hip
238, a colt named Piven, is out of Her Entourage
(Elusive Quality), an unraced daughter of the
stakes-winning Alydeed mare Grand Deed. The
colt is consigned by Select Sales as agent.
Poseidon’s Warrior won seven races from 21
starts. Five were stakes, with the most notable
being the Alfred G. Vanderbilt (gr. I) as a 4-year-
old, in which he defeated a strong field that
included Justin Phillip and Shackleford.
A son of Speightstown, Poseidon’s Warrior is
a half brother to stakes winners Play Bingo and
Quick ‘N Smart. He has stood at Pleasant Acres
Stallions near Morriston, Fla., for each of his
three seasons at $6,500, and has 53 foals from
his first crop.
Three from Poseidon’s Warrior’s first crop
have gone to the sale ring, and the most expen-

sive of them goes before buyers at the July sale as
part of the Select Sales consignment: Hip 211, a
colt out of the Belong to Me mare Family First. He
was purchased by Machmer Hall at the OBS Octo-
ber sale for $21,000.
Corfu is also by Malibu Moon. He won two of
six starts, the most notable coming in the Sarato-
ga Special Stakes (gr. II) as a 2-year-old. His dam
Fashion Cat (Forest Wildcat) is a half sister to mul-
tiple grade I winner Peace Rules (Jules) and stakes
winner Wild Fashion.
Standing at Bridlewood Farms for $3,500,
Corfu had 32 foals in his first crop. His sole rep-
resentative at the July sale, consigned by Baccari
Bloodstock as Hip 59, is a filly out of Stay On Track
(Closing Argument), who produced stakes winner
Karen’s Silk (High Cotton). Stay On Track’s dam
Traki Traki is a stakes winner who produced four
stakes winners of her own, including the grade I
winner Bushfire (Louis Quatorze). BH

PENNSYLVANIA FIRST-CROP SIRE EL PADRINOBy Alastair Bull
The Fasig-Tipton July sale in Lexington, Ky., will

Pennsylvania-based sire El Padrino.
A resident at Northview Stallion Station, El Padri-
no won three of eight starts, including the Risen Star
Stakes (gr. II). A son of Pulpit out of Enchanted Rock
(Giant’s Causeway), he is a half brother to the multi-
ple grade I winner Verazzano (More Than Ready).

fee of $5,000, El Padrino covered 89 mares, and had
63 foals. The following year he bred 109 mares.

SINGLE SEASON SIRES FAST BULLET, DENMANBy Alastair Bull
For the connections of most sires with first yearlings
on offer in 2016, it’s a time of anticipation, wonder-
ing what the future will bring.
But it’s a different story for those offering first-
crop progeny of Fast Bullet and Denman.
The 2016 yearling crop features the only progeny
of Fast Bullet, who died of complications of colic after
standing one season, while Australian sire Denman
has not returned to the United States following a
single season shuttling to Darley in Kentucky.
Fast Bullet won four of his seven races, culminat-
ing in a triumph in the RTN True North Handicap (gr.
II) over six furlongs, in which he beat grade I winner
and fellow freshman sire Justin Phillip. He had an
average winning margin of five lengths.
By Speightstown, Fast Bullet is out of Renfro Valley
Star (Dayjur), a winning
daughter of champion
2-year-old filly Brave Raj,
whose victories included
the Breeders’ Cup Juve-
nile Fillies (gr. I).
Upon retirement Fast
Bullet entered stud at
Pauls Mill in Kentucky
for a $7,500 fee and had
just moved to WinStar
Farm when he had to be
euthanized in December
2014.
In his first season Fast
Bullet had 35 foals. So
far, two weanlings and
three short yearlings
have been sold for an
average of $20,740, the
best being a $60,000
short yearling out of Hur-
ricane Bernie sold at the
Keeneland January sale.
The sole Fast Bullet
yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale is Hip
189, a colt out of Darn That Girl, a winning daughter
of Darn That Alarm whose progeny to date include
the Florida-bred regional stakes winner Dream of Me.
Denman is a group I-winning son of Australian
sire Lonhro (Octagonal), whose first U.S. crop made a
useful start, producing graded stakes winners Iso-
therm and Shakhimat.
Denman came to the U.S. after an outstanding
start to his stud career. He was second leading first-
crop sire in Australia in 2013-14 with three stakes
winners and all five of his stakes winners to date
have come from his first Australian crop.
There are two yearlings from Denman’s U.S.-sired
crop at the July sale. The first, Hip 155, is a filly out of
the winning Hard Spun mare Boudicca, a daughter
of the stakes-winning Taft Lil Queen (Irish Open); the
second, Hip 300, is a colt out of the stakes-winning
Marquetry mare Marq of Beauty, who hails from the
family of Japanese grade I winner Hat Trick. BH

LADY ELI, FLINTSHIRE WORK AT BELMONTBy Blood-Horse Staff
Sheep Pond Partners' undefeated Lady Eli, who
continues her comeback from laminitis, and Judd-
monte Farms' homebred Flintshire breezed on the
inner turf course July 10 at Belmont Park for trainer
Chad Brown.
Lady Eli, a 4-year-old Divine Park filly, worked a
half-mile in :49 2/5. It was her second Belmont turf
work; she worked a slower four furlongs July 3 on the
same course at Belmont after a tendon issue cost her
a few months of training.
"I thought she worked great," Brown said. "It was
her second work back and we put her in company
(with Grey Stark)."
Brown earlier indicated he plans to take Lady Eli to
Saratoga Race Course this summer but hasn't picked
out a race for the filly.
Flintshire, a 6-year-old Dansili horse, breezed five
furlongs in 1:01 2/5. Flintshire, who won the Man-
hattan Stakes (gr. IT) June 11 at Belmont in his first
start for Brown, will be pointed to the July 30 Bowling
Green Handicap (gr. IIT) at Saratoga.
Flintshire captured the 2015 Sword Dancer Stakes
(gr. IT) at Saratoga and in 2014 finished second to
Main Sequence in the Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) at
Santa Anita Park. Brown indicated another trip to
California later this year is planned.
"I'd like to keep him running out of his own stall
(in New York) all the way up to the Breeders' Cup and
then go out on the road," Brown said. "That's where
we're leaning." BH
CREATIVE CAUSE'S WELL-TIMED STAKES WINNERBy Ron Mitchell
A 2 3/4-length victory by Theonewewaitedfor in
the $125,000 Landaluce Stakes at Santa Anita
Park July 9 could not have come at a better time for
Brereton C. Jones’ Airdrie Stud.
The 2-year-old filly trained by Mike Harrington for
owner-breeder Heinz Steinmann is the first stakes
winner for her sire, Creative Cause, who stands at
Airdrie. A grade I-winning son of Giant's Causeway
also trained by Harrington for Steinmann, Creative
Cause entered stud in 2013 at his current fee of
$15,000.
Not only does Airdrie stand Creative Cause, but
the Midway, Ky., farm also will offer all four year-
lings by the stallion entered in the July 12 Fasig-Tip-
ton July selected yearling sale in Lexington.
"Creative Cause is a horse we have had great
faith in from the beginning," Airdrie's Bret Jones said
July 10 while showing yearlings to prospective buy-
ers on a pleasant, sunny morning. "We have four of
them to sell and they are the only four on the sales
grounds, so that puts us in a very good spot."
Theonewewaitedfor is one of 76 foals from the
first crop of Creative Cause, who is represented by 38
yearlings that have sold at public auction for an aver-
age of $65,908, more than four times the stud fee.
"We're obviously bullish on his chances going
forward," Jones said. BH

NEW SIRES IN SOUTH AFRICABy Sarah Whitelaw
South Africa’s stallion ranks grew considerably this
year: New sires standing their first seasons at stud
in 2016 include sons of Dubawi, Galileo, and Tapit.
This breeding season (which begins Sept,1), two
first-crop sires represent premier sire Galileo.
Ascot Stud is home to first-year Global View (Gal-
ileo), who won the Generous Stakes (gr. III) at 2, and
the American Turf Stakes (gr. II) at 3.
Bush Hill Stud in Kwa-Zulu Natal stands 2013
Eflow You First International Stakes (Ire-III) winner
Flying The Flag (Galileo) who is joined by Boylesports
Irish One Thousand Guineas (Ire-I) winner Halfway To
Heaven (Pivotal).
Willow Magic is set to become the first son of
leading sire Dubawi at stud in South Africa—the for-
mer South African Nursery Stakes (SAf-I) will cover at
Summerhill Stud in Natal this season.
Klawervlei Stud will be home to Coup de Grace,
winner of the 2014 Amsterdam Stakes (gr. II) at Sara-
toga and the first son of champion sire Tapit to enter
stud in South Africa.
Outstanding South African-bred sire Dynasty has
three sons set to join the sire ranks this year: Futura
and Legislate (both named Horse of the Year) will
stand at Drakenstein; Grand Parade Cape Guineas
(SAf-I) winner Act of War goes to Summerhill. BH
TOO MUCH BLING GETS TEXAS DOUBLEBy Tom LaMarra
Lane’s End Texas stallion Too Much Bling had a big
night at Lone Star Park July 9 as the sire of both
winners in divisions of the Texas Thoroughbred Futu-
rity, one of them on a disqualification.
Keene Thoroughbreds’ Bling On the Music, out
of the Action This Day mare Soft Music, won the
$93,903 division for 2-year-old fillies by 8 1/2 lengths
in :58.11 for five furlongs on a track rated fast. The
filly, who has won her first two starts by a combined
13 1/4 lengths, was purchased for $95,000 at the TTA
2-year-olds in training sale, is trained by J.R. Caldwell,
and was ridden by Luis Quinonez.
In the $90,248 division for colts and geldings,
Boomer's Boy defeated Shaded by a head in :59.75
for five furlongs but was disqualified and placed
fourth for interference. That made the winner Clark
Brewster’s Shaded, a 2-year-old colt out of the Mine-
shaft mare Fast Find.
Shaded, now two-for-two, was a $36,000 buy at
the TTA 2-year-olds in training sale. He's trained by
Steve Asmussen and was ridden by Iram Diego.
W.S. Farish bred both futurity winners. The races
are for Texas-accredited horses and TTA sale gradu-
ates. BH

THE CHEROKEE RUN-EMPIRE MAKER CROSSBy Eric Mitchell
The return of Empire Maker to the U.S. and
the rise of his sons and grandsons at stud
have the potential to improve the value and suc-
cess of the late Cherokee Run's daughters.
Darley's son of Runaway Groom was eutha-
nized recently due to the infirmities of old age.
Through July 8, 28 black-type stakes winners
and 37 black-type-placed runners represent
Cherokee Run as a broodmare sire. Five of those
won graded/group stakes.
Among his 28 stakes winners, 15 are sons,
grandsons, and great-grandsons of Mr. Prospec-
tor with a particular strong affinity for pedigrees
that include Mr. Prospector's son Fappiano.
The most successful cross with Cherokee
Run daughters so far has been with sons of
Kingmambo, who have produced five black-type
stakes winners, including Cherokee Run's most
successful runner as a broodmare sire to date:
Hokko Tarumae, Japan's 2014 champion dirt
horse. Hokko Tarumae is by King Kamehameha.
The other four stakes winners are by Lane's End
stallion, Lemon Drop Kid.
The cross with Kingmambo, has been particu-
larly effective with mares that concentrate the
influence of Mr. Prospector through their dams.
Hokko Tarume's dam, Madam Cherokee, is a
daughter of Unfoiled, by Unbridled, a Mr. Pros-
pector grandson through Fappiano.
Stakes winner and grade III-placed runner
Donoharm is also out of a mare whose female
family adds Mr. Prospector; Donoharm's dam
is Tasso Run, whose dam Tasso Bee is by Fappi-
ano's son Tasso.
The influence of Fappiano can also be found
on the sire side of the equation. Grade II win-
ner Fioretti, out of the Cherokee Run daughter
Move Clickly, is by Bernardini, whose dam Cara
Rafaela is by Fappiano’s son Quiet American. A
similar scenario exists with Rattlesnake Bridge,
whose sire Tapit is out of Unbridled’s daughter
Tap Your Heels.
Another pattern found among stakes win-
ners with Cherokee Run as a broodmare sire
is inbreeding to Turn-To. Cherokee Run traces
back to Turn-To through his broodmare sire,
Silver Saber, who is a grandson of Turn-To’s son
Sir Gaylord.
Stakes winner and grade II-placed Kid Kate's
pedigree combines the line of Turn-To in Cher-
okee Run with three additional lines through
her female family. Her second dam, Latch, is by
Broad Brush, who was inbred 3x3 to Turn-To.
Kid Kate gets the third line of Turn-To through
Latch's broodmare sire, Cox's Ridge.
A Turn-To connection resides with Lemon
Drop Kid, as well. His dam Charming Lassie is
inbred 5x4 to Turn-To.
Empire Maker returned to stud in the U.S.
this year at Gainesway. His sons at stud include
WinStar Farm's Pioneerof the Nile and Bode-
meister, Darby Dan's Sky Kingdom, Lovacre
Ranch's Empire Way, and Rockridge Stud's
Soaring Empire. Empire Maker's highest-profiled
grandsons at stud include Ashford Stud's Ameri-
can Pharoah and Airdrie Stud's Cairo Prince. BH
