    Appendix question 7

    (7) Using equation (2.21) and the 100% primary consolidation 100, plot the theoretical time vs

settlement curve and the measured curve on the same axes, compare and comment on these.

    Procedure

    A) Tv Ranges from ( 0.001 to 2 ), select 5 values of Tv within this range. NB: From the

theoritcical graph fig 7.18 the Tv scale is log, therefore selection of your values must cover

    this range accordingly.

    B) Using your selected values of Tv use the equation 2.21 to determine the Theoretical values

of U (procedure of this is the same as question 5 and 6).

    C) For your plotted deformation vs. log time graph, your total settelment (100) at 100%U =

    d100-d0.

    D) Using this total settelment (100) at 100 %U consolidation determine the corresponding

settelment values at the calculated %U from (B).

    Eg. U% =20%, if at U%=100 and 100 = 100mm

    At U%=20% = 100/100 *20 =20mm

    E) Using

    a. Cv = Tvd

    2

    t

Determine the correspond values of t for the Tv values selected.

    F) Having computed the theoretical values of settlement at selected time(t) values plot the

graph of theoretical settlement vs. time and compare to the actual settlement vs time for

your sample loading stage (using your deformation vs log time graph).
