Could I ask the Chief of Army, with quotes to be attributed to him, why the Army will not release any service details (appointments, ranks) of any member of the ADF up to the rank of general (as per quote from

) within the individual's consent. Is the policy in writing, or was it made up for this occasion? Can I see a copy of the directive? Is the policy consulted when Army PR puts out glowing career statements about senior officers, including, as recently, Brigadier Campbell. Or is the public to be restricted to the selectivity of what PR, or the officer in question, or both, chooses to put out? Why? Are not ranks, appointments, particularly of officers with a star, a matter of public record, and gazetted? Is there any national security reason, or "on water" reason for the coyness? Has Brigadier Campbell, for example, served in special forces? Does the Privacy Commissioner agree with the policy? Was he consulted? If a senior officer declined to provide some information, for example about their current posting, would the Army intervene to supply the information. Has the Army public relations system ever previously refused to supply such information in relation to any starred officer? When?

These are questions for which I need answers tonight, and I want to attribute them to General Campbell or a spokesperson for him, since, obviously, such a policy, extending as it does to senior officers, could come only from his level. A supply of the relevant military CV information from the Department of Human services will not render the questiuons redundant, since the approach of army (and of Gen Campbell to public accountability matters) is itself a matter of public interest. These follow a conversation with , who promised answers, but, rather than taking questions, insisted on the full rigmarole of having me put them in writing to an anonymous and thus unaccountable email address.

Defence media, speaking I’ve got a request of Army that’s where all I want to do at the

moment is check that a something…I put in to media @ so and so @ defence at the suggestion of has been received and because I want an answer to it tonight hmmmhmm I want an out of hours number where I can ring and a harass people until I get the answer Ahhh..who… you want the Defence after hours number do you? I want Defence PR after hours number Yep, yep, so your very lucky, I’m the person on duty tonight Yeah Um our number is um yes

umm… we also have people in the office until seven and then there is ..then that when that the ….[interrupted By

… So, Then your attainable on 612 71 triple9 until seven yes alright now um… have you got.. have you seen the questions… um, sorry what was your last name?

Oh yes, um … I personally haven’t been dealing with your case No,no,no,no I know that, sorry I put in questions earlier and one of the reasons why I am ringing now and this is no disrespect to you, but it is I put them in before midday and at about 3 O’clock or so I enquired what had happened and it became apparent that nobody had even looked at it to that point. Although I got an answer fairly quickly. hmmhmm Afterwards I spoke to Angus Campbell’s office and later to

. She rang me …. yes and she gave me a very unsatisfactory answer of sorts which I have.. um… noted.. but when I asked further questions about it, she required that I go through the full rigmarole of putting them into media@defence etc etc etc.. hmmhmm But she said they would be answered. Now… Um, Yep The matter in question is the fact that the Army has decided that the military CV and by that I don’t mean anything private but just the public appointments and ranks that Kathryn Campbell has held, Brigadier Kathryn Campbell has held hmmhmm I asked for a list of them Hmmhmm Now Defence PR has purported to pass these onto the Department of Human Services as though these are a matter for Kathryn
