Catholics who commemorate the Feast of St. Januar-ius may celebrate two miracles—one ancient, one modern; one Old World, one New World. This past September 19, at the cathedral in Naples, Italy, dedicated to the fourth century martyr, dried blood pre-served as a relic of the saint miraculously liquefied, as it has done nearly every year for the last seventeen hundred years. Half a world away, in New York’s Little Italy, descendants of Neapolitan immi-grants remember their Old World patron saint with a ten-day Festival of San Gennaro, much as they have done for the past eighty-seven years. As skeptics sadly continue to doubt the first event, so many believers may be tempted to disregard the second. The raucous celebrations accompanying the Festival of San Gennaro stand at quite a remove from the doctrinal concerns and devotional practices that have marked “serious” Catholicism in America for the past gen-eration. Yet the promiscuous mingling of the sacred and the profane, the public and the private, has been the great historic achievement of Catholic culture. The story of San Gennaro begins in the early fourth cen-tury, during the Great Persecution under the emperor Diocletian. Bishop of Benevento, Italy, Gennaro was imprisoned for visiting other Christians imprisoned in the early years of the persecution. As leg-end has it, Gennaro was tortured and thrown into a fiery furnace, yet emerged unharmed. At the end of his tortures, he was publicly be-headed. An old man wrapped his body and head in a burial cloth, while the women of Naples soaked up his blood with a sponge, enough to fill two glass phials. Four decades later, a slave woman named Eusebia, who had been Gennaro’s wet nurse, carried the phials in a procession as the faithful transferred the martyr’s remains to the catacombs of Naples. It was during this procession that the liquification first occurred. Since that time, the miracle is said to have occurred three times each year: on the first Sunday in May, on Sep-tember 19 (the saint’s feast day), and on December 16 (to com-memorate the saint’s protection against the threatened eruption of the volcano at Vesuvius). "The earth has music for those who listen." ~ William Shakespeare The Feast of San Gennaro, originally a one-day religious commemoration, arrived in the United States in September 1926 when immigrants from Naples congregated along Mulberry Street in the Little Italy section of Manhattan in New York City, to continue the tradition they had followed in Italy to celebrate Saint Januarius, the Patron Saint of Naples. His feast day is September 19 in the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. The immigrant families on Mulberry Street who started the feast, a group of cafe owners, erected a small chapel in the street to house the image of their patron Saint. They invited all to partake of their wares, asking the devoted to pin an offering to the ribbon streamers that are hung from the statue's apron. This money was

then distributed to the needy poor of the neighborhood. Over time, the festival expanded into an 11-day street fair organized and run by people outside the neighborhood. It is now an annual celebration of food and drink, and a major tourist attraction. Centered on Mulberry Street, which is closed to traffic for the occa-sion, the festival generally features sausages, zeppole, street ven-dors, games, parades and other such attractions. The Grand Proces-sion is held starting at 2 p.m. on the last Saturday of the feast, imme-diately after a celebratory Mass at the Church of the Most Precious Blood. This is a Roman Catholic candlelit procession in which the statue of San Gennaro is carried from its permanent home in the Most Precious Blood Church through the streets of Little Italy. Autumn Italian Dishes: Pumpkin Ravioli or Tortelli, Savory Pumpkin Pie (Piatto Unico), Tagliatelle with Black Truffle, Porcini Mushroom Risotto, Fillet Steak in Pastry, Pumpkin Frittelle, Buon Appetito. If your idea of a great vacation is a less crowded destina-tion, you should definitely visit Lake Como in Autumn. One of the most beautiful lakes in Italy, Lake Como in the month of October transforms into the perfect place to take a break and pamper yourself with exclusive Italian experience. The enchanting beauty of the lake and the towns on its shores accentuates during the autumn season when the climate is pleasant and the towns are friendlier and less touristy. Your pocket will also thank you for taking a trip to Lake Como during October when food, accommodation and transport are often available at discounted rates. Since the crowd has thinned by now, you have a lot of room for a peaceful retreat by the lake. The promenades are especially beautiful where you can enjoy a slow romantic walk soaking up the beauty of the landscape. The weather is predictable during the season and adds to the serene atmosphere of the place. Lake Como has plenty of indoor attractions too such as the magnificent villas, historical churches and important museums which give an insight into the history of the region. All monies will be used to purchase phone cards, which will be given to overseas members of ALL Branches of our Military so they will be able to call home. Membership Dues: As you already know, the membership voted to approve the Dues and Retention Committees proposal for the needed dues increase for the coming year (2018). With this increase other adjustments were made to our dues paying procedures to be in line with the NYS OSIA By Laws regarding Dues. Listed below are the approved changes:

All Past Presidents will be assessed $40 per year dues. This amount will cover the OSIA annual per capita tax. Membership dues will increase to $80 per year. Members over 62 years of age, with 5 years membership in the Lodge will now pay $50 per year dues. If two (2) members from the same family join the order at the same time, one of the installation fees of $50 will be

waived.

NOTE: Effective with these changes, all members will be required to present their current Membership Card to the Sentinel when entering the Lodge for a General Meeting. The following OSIA General Law rules will be enforced:

ALL DUES must be PAID by December 31, 2017. Any member who has not paid dues by December 31, 2017, will be considered IN ARREARS. Any member who has not paid dues by April 1st, 2018, will be IN DEFAULT. This means,

- Being dropped from the membership. - Re-instatement will require the OSIA $10 initiation fee and full dues payment. - Loss of senior discount (over 62 with 5 years membership), if reinstated.
