Fatal accidents 2007/08 - half year
2007/08 – first 6 months
Early indications from the level of fatal accident notifications at the 6-month stage show that 35 have been received to date. This compares with: 37 received at this stage in 2005/06 (final total 64) and 34 received at this stage in 2006/07p (final total 84). However, last year’s increase was due to a significant rise in the latter half of the year which was against the established seasonal trend. It remains to be seen whether this is part of a new pattern or simply a one off occurrence. It is too early to say whether this abnormal pattern is being repeated in 2007/08, but there are no signs of this at present.
Fatal accidents 2007/08 - half year, further points: Subject to further validation, the key points are: Falls from a height have increased significantly from 30%
of total in 2006/07p to 54% of total to date. Struck by vehicle (transport) have increased from 7% of
total in 2006/07p to 16%. In contrast to 2006/07p with 10 electrical fatalities, none
have been reported in the first six months of 2007/08. Fatal accidents in new build housing have not been
maintained at last year’s exceptional level, (20% in 2006/07p, 16% in 2007/08 to date).
Fatal accidents in refurburbishment / repair domestic have not been maintained at last year’s exceptional level, (29% in 2006/07p, 22% in 2007/08 to date).
Fatal accidents in Refurbishment / repair in total have been maintained at high level (52%) because of an increase (to 30%) in refurbishment / repair of non-domestic premises. (was 22% in 2006/07p)
Omnibus Workers Survey
~ 6,000 construction workers interviewed
• part of ongoing national survey run by British Market Research Bureau
Gives current/recent data for range of health and safety issues
Phase I completed, results in the Intelligence Report on HSE Construction website
Phase II now taking place for 2007/08 involving 3,000 construction workers
Construction Booster Survey
Health and safety practices (and changes) observed at site level
Structure – cognitive, pilot and main survey
Survey is being repeated in early 2008
What we want from you
To help direct and evaluate the construction programme we need:
• data/statistics that you collect on trends/emerging issues
• Feedback: insights into trends/emerging issues how best to tackle them ways of measuring progress outcomes of projects or interventions
