The Chair of Buddhist Studies at the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe” announces a Sum-mer School for Colloquial Tibetan. Guided by ex-perienced teachers, students will be introduced to a fascinating culture with a rich heritage.

Course (6 ECTS points)

The intensive course aims to introduce students to the basics of conversation and to develop the skills necessary for smooth communication. The focus will be upon the Central Tibetan dialect, knowledge of which will enable the participants to connect to a vast number of speakers in Tibet, as well as those in Tibetan communities in exile. Classes will combine theoretical explanations as well as practical application of the content just learned. Successful participation earns six credit points according to ECTS standards.

Venue

The Summer School is conducted at the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe.” As part of Germany’s oldest university, it provides not only a vibrant and highly in-ternational study environment, but also a conve-nient location to spend some weeks in the beau-tiful and historic town of Heidelberg.

Summer School

COLLOQUIAL TIBETAN

Teacher

The principal teacher of the summer school is Jonathan Samuels (Ge-she Sherab Gyatso), an instructor of Tibetan language of many years experience, including as the main teacher of the Lotsawa Rinchen Zang-po Translator Program-me, Dharamsala, India, 1996–2004. He works at the Cluster as research associate and language teacher and is currently completing his PhD at Oxford University. His text-book on Colloquial Tibetan was just published within Routledge’s Colloquial Series.

Conversation Partner

Lobsang Chodak, born in Rebkong, Tibet, will assist the course as a conversation partner. After his studies in Ti-betan Buddhist doctrine at Ganden Monastery in South India he worked for Tibet Times and also acted as a tutor and con-versation partner for va-rious institutions.

Study Material

The course will be based on Jonathan Samuels’ textbook Colloquial Ti-betan, published within Routledge’s Colloquial Series. Students are re-quested to obtain a copy of the textbook prior to entering the course.

Prerequisites

A reasonable knowledge of English – the me-dium of the classes – is a prerequisite for pro-spective participants. They should also, by the start of the course, be familiar with the Tibetan sound and writing systems (using, for example, the material mentioned above).

Timetable

Classes run from 09:00 to 17:00, including lunch and coffee breaks, from Monday to Fri-day.
