A Message from our

CEO and Board PresidentIn 1967 we began at the cutting edge, as free clinics were blossoming across the country offering vital services to those in need. Our commitment to ensuring equitable health care for all was considered revolutionary at the time, but it soon became the gold standard for community clinics nationwide.

Today, more than 45 years later, we continue embracing the changes transforming our health care system to reach even more people in need. This year, as a result of our designation as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), we officially changed our name to Saban Community Clinic. Building on our legacy, this acknowledges the impact we continue to have in the Los Angeles community as a provider of choice for many seeking affordable, quality health care.

Our transition from a free clinic comes at the same time that our nation prepares for the largest expansion of health care coverage in history under the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”). Starting January 1, 2014 more than 7 million Californians who are currently uninsured will have access to ongoing and preventive care, with the promise of enjoying longer, healthier lives.

We consider this a victory after decades advocating for health care as a basic right, however about 3 million Californians will be left without access to care because they may not be able to afford insurance offered by the new health insurance exchange, Covered California. In fact, more than 60 percent of California’s uninsured families live in Los Angeles County and their need for access to affordable care will continue.

The Clinic is here because our community needs us. Thanks to the active and committed leadership from our Board of Directors, from the Friends of the Saban Community Clinic, as well as our generous donors, health providers and staff, we provide over 90,000 annual patient visits, serving more than 20,000 men, women and children in our community each year, regardless of ability to pay.

With your generosity, we can ensure that our legacy continues, as we work on the front lines of health care expansion and deliver quality compassionate care to everyone who comes through our doors.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Bujer Bob Broder CEO, Saban Community Clinic Board President, Saban Community Clinic

Why I Give…Our donors come from all walks of life and each have their own reasons for giving to Saban Community Clinic. Each generous donation ensures that the Clinic can continue its mission of providing affordable quality health care to families in need.

“It’s really an honor to be able to afford to help my community.” — Analia Saban, artist, painter, sculptor and Clinic donor

Analia Saban was born in Argentina and now lives in both Los Angeles and New York City. “But I love L.A.” she says. While she is not related to philanthropists and Clinic donors Cheryl and Haim Saban, Analia says she is tickled by the coincidence that the Clinic shares her name. Why does she support Saban Community Clinic? “I enjoy knowing that the Clinic goes beyond basic health care and also provides social services like showers and housing placement for homeless patients. Being in a place of need can happen to anyone, and the Clinic gives those in need a chance for a better, healthier future.”

Who you’ve helped…“I was four months pregnant with my first baby when my

husband died in a car accident. I knew I had to be strong for

my baby but it was so hard, I felt alone. Saban Community Clinic

took care of me and my baby during my pregnancy. They gave

me baby clothes, diapers and support through this difficult time.

Without them, I don’t know how I would have made it.”

Generous Gifts Continue Changing Lives at The Wallis Annenberg Children & family Health CenterThe Wallis Annenberg Children & Family Health Center is a neighborhood oasis of health and wellness for low-income and uninsured families who live in the midst of some of Hollywood’s legendary entertainment production studios. The family-centered medical home opened in 2007 thanks to the generosity of countless donors and community supporters who contributed over $17 million during the Clinic’s 40th Anniversary Campaign.

Support from the community continues today to help pay for vital care and treatments that heal young lives each year, providing more than 3,000 annual patient visits to families, regardless of ability to pay.

Prenatal Program – a joint partnership with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, provides quality maternity care to low-income, uninsured — and often homeless — women in Los Angeles to help them deliver healthy babies. OB-GYN residents from Cedars-Sinai provide prenatal care at the Clinic as part of their training under the supervision of Cedars-Sinai faculty. Nearly all prenatal patients enter the program in the first trimester of pregnancy and are provided with parenting classes, nutrition counseling, and help obtaining housing and benefits.

Children’s Health Services – provides an expanded range of pediatric care targeting diabetes, obesity, asthma, and other chronic illnesses to ensure children grow up healthy and strong. Exam rooms and waiting areas are designed to be child-friendly, and the Clinic is open evening and weekend hours to accommodate working families.

Pediatric Dentistry – works with children and their families to prevent oral ailments to help minimize the need for future, costly dental treatments. A team of highly qualified and compassionate dental health providers deliver routine oral examinations, full-mouth x-rays, cleanings and fluoride treatments at a low-cost or at no charge.

Saban Community Clinic is grateful for the community’s generosity in helping expand access to health care throughout Los Angeles, and touching the lives of thousands of children and families to give them hope for a healthier tomorrow.

Public Entities and Partners

A message from our

Development Director I was recently interviewed by The Chronicle of Philanthropy for a story on how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) will impact health care nonprofits like Saban Community Clinic and our need to fundraise. The questions they asked reminded me of recent conversations I’ve had with longstanding contributors, partners, and Board Members about our new name, our transition from a free clinic to a Federally

Qualified Health Center (FQHC), and the implementation of the new health care law. The question on everyone’s mind is: “Will donors continue to contribute, or will they mistakenly assume support is no longer needed?”

Sure, the Affordable Care Act will make it possible for 7 million Californians who are currently uninsured to get health coverage starting January 2014. However, nearly 2 million Los Angeles and other Southern Californian residents will remain uninsured because they won’t be eligible for Medi-Cal or able to afford Covered California health plans. They will continue to rely on Saban Community Clinic for their primary care, and we will continue to serve each patient, regardless of their health insurance status or ability to pay at the time of their visit.

On average, the state will only reimburse the Clinic for 60 to 70 percent of what it costs to provide each patient visit, leaving us with a gap of unfunded expenses. For instance:

• Adult Dental: The Clinic anticipates a reduction of $309,752 in reimbursable services for adult dental this year due to Los Angeles County budget cuts.

• Senior Health: The Clinic will provide a total of $2,222,416 in uncompensated care for seniors 55 years and older this fiscal year according to our latest projections.

• Teen Health: This year, the Clinic will provide about $122,196 in unreimbursed care for teen patients 12–17 years old.

To cover some of the costs of providing care, we now ask patients who don’t have health coverage to pay for services on a sliding-fee scale that begins at $0.00 and adjusts to their household income and family size, in accordance with federal guidelines. While the Clinic will not turn patients away due to inability to pay, we will count on the generosity of individual donors, foundations and corporate partners to continue providing high quality health care to the families who need us the most. Your ongoing support is imperative. Please continue to contribute generously! Thank you.

Special thanks to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for recently awarding the clinic a $500,000 grant. This magnanimous

gift will be put to great use towards Clinic infrastructure including implementation of Electronic Health Records and

more. Thank you Cedars-Sinai for all you do to help our patients!
