Principal’s News A big thank you to our local IGA who donated $1000 to our school last week through their Community Chest program. The much appreciated funds will be used to support our ongoing breakfast program which operates every morning out of our canteen and is available for the benefit of all students. This Tuesday after school we will be holding our annual Afternoon Tea for Year 7 and their parents. The purpose of the afternoon tea is to provide an informal opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teachers and check-in on how they have started their high school education. I hope as many parents as possible can make it to this event. Last Friday the school was pleased to host a visit from Iron + Clay. This group of young people not only performed some great music but also conducted sessions with our students discussing the important issue of mental health and positive life choices. It was fantastic to see the active engagement our students showed during the different sessions. Thank you to all the staff who supported the students during these times. Congratulations to Year 7 on their exceptional behaviour during the camp last week. From all reports there was a lot of fun to be had and plenty of good memories made. A big thank you to Mr Ferguson and all the supporting staff who helped to make this excursion such a success. Over the last few weeks there have been a few issues with student behaviour whilst travelling on buses to and from school. It is important that students are aware that any misbehaviour while travelling on a bus can result in the school taking disciplinary action in addition to that taken by the bus company. I ask parents to support us in addressing this problem by reminding their child/children of the importance of appropriate behaviour when travelling in any motor vehicle including wearing seatbelts, being respectful to the driver, staying seated and not interfering with other students and their property (including siblings) whilst on the bus. Congratulations to Olivia Price on being last week’s winner of the Canteen Voucher.

NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program. In 2020 the following vaccines will be offered:

return the completed consent form to their child’s school

ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic. Please note that, to improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses during Year 7 or 8 (for HPV and dTpa vaccination) and during Year 10 or 11 (for Meningococcal ACWY vaccination). Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/ Pages/withdraw_consent.aspx. A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic as a physical card. Details about vaccinations given at school will also be uploaded to the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) to support complete vaccination histories.

Year 7 Camp Last week saw our Year 7’s head off on a three day camp at Wyangala Dam, with the aim to spend some much needed time getting to know and work productively with each other in a fun environment ahead of their journey into high school. The students were divided into six groups, each one developing their own banner and war cry in preparation for various competitive activities. Students hiked to a lookout, competed in a range of fun relays and battled it out with some classic tug of war. The first evening was spent on a newspaper fashion parade which saw the creation of some wonderful costumes and finished with a paper aeroplane challenge. Thursday continued with more fun relays and team building activities. Groups faced off in a scavenger hunt, built paddle pop boomerangs and had a dip in the dam. Students also took the time to write their future selves a letter to be opened upon graduation. Thursday night was spent in a closely fought trivia battle which showcased the admirable general knowledge of Year 7. Food was plentiful throughout the camp and all students helped to cook, serve and clean up after meals without argument and were always eager to lend a helping hand. Canowindra High School can be proud of their behaviour as representatives of the school. The camp was a great success and fun was had by all. A big thanks to Mr Tim Roberts, Ms Sam Dunk, Mrs Janeen Coutanche, Mrs Kirsty Smith, Mrs Elissa Liondis and Mrs Suzannah Tapim for attending the camp and taking such good care of the kids! Mr Stuart Ferguson, Year Adviser

YEAR 11 & 12 Metals & Engineering INDUSTRY VISIT

On Monday 17th February, Canowindra High School’s Year 11 & 12 Metals and Engineering students travelled to Forefront Services in Orange. The Industry Visit is a mandatory part of the Industrial Technology – Metals course. The students are required to ask a series of questions related to the management structure of the industry through to the day-to-day operations of the plant, and then compile the information into an Industry Study Report. We arrived at approximately 10:30 am starting with a brief introduction and safety talk. After signing in, Mr Dean Stanbury the Operations Manager of Forefront Services decided to sit down and answer all of the student’s questions. It took about one and a half hours but the students managed to acquire enough information to assist in their report. The next stage of the tour was a walk through the production facilities, where the students had the opportunity to see how a real fabrication workshop ran. Fortunately the workshop was not busy that day, allowing the students to walk freely and get a real understanding of how the fabrication and production processes worked. The students were allowed to take as many photos as they liked, these can be used to enhance their final report. I would like to thank Mr Conliffe for assisting the students during the day and a special thank you to Mr Dean Stanbury and the management of Forefront Services for taking the time out of their busy day to support our students.
