HelloBitten by the Ealing shop-love bugEaling shopping at a glance – that’s what this directory is all about. It’s Christmas season and in Ealing we like to shop local. Browse through these pages, and discover some shops and services you never realised were available locally. You can pick up a lot of information in one quick look at a shop’s website, so after you catch their “vibe” here, check out the real thing online or instore, and enjoy supporting your local community. We launch this magazine with a special focus on Pitshanger Lane – my Christmas wish is that you will get as much pleasure from a visit there as I always do!

“it’s easy to spend

all day here”

What is it about Pitshanger?

A cheery welcome to visitors**especially if you’re Christmas shopping

Agentle curve stretching from Brunner Road in the east to Scotch Common at the edge

of Pitshanger Park, and roughly 7 minutes on the E2 or E9 bus from Ealing Broadway station, is the

lovely Pitshanger Lane. So lovely that the streets branching north and south off of it have conglomerated to call themselves “Pitshanger Village”. A real sense of community can be felt here as neighbours stop on The Lane for a quick chat and the shopkeepers tweet about the latest news on sales, local celebrations, and whatever

specials are on offer in-store. With over 70 shop-fronts to draw you in, numerous restaurants menus to try out, and all manner of service and pampering to choose from, it’s easy to spend all day here. The notable absence of big-name chain stores only serves to enhance the charm of the place. In the run-up to Christmas, the Pitshanger Community Association’s Light Up the Lane festival (25 November, where we are launching Contactus) makes a cheery welcome for new visitors. So, if you’ve sampled the delights of the area in the night-time, do come back during the day to take advantage of December discounts. And that’s what’s so special about Pitshanger – you do want to come back •

THE HIPPARADE

Quick trip down memory Lane

From the 12th century, Ealing was divided into ‘manors’ including Gunnersbury and Pitshanger. The latter

was used for farming wheat, barley and rye, its name describing a wooded slope frequented by hawks and kites. Pitshanger Farm specialised in rearing dairy cattle from the 18th century. The old farmhouse, close to the river in today’s Pitshanger Park, was demolished in 1908. The “Gentle Brent …Wandering Wembley-wards at will,” was later lauded by Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman in ‘Middlesex’. Farmland was replaced in the early twentieth century by the pioneering Brentham Garden Suburb, serviced by newly-built

shops, churches and a school along Pitshanger Lane. This was the world to which a young lad from England’s industrial north, Fred Perry, moved into with his family at the end of World War I. He began to play tennis on public courts and developed his skills at the Brentham Club, as cricketer Mike Brearley and footballer Peter Crouch did years later. Perry became Wimbledon champion, enjoyed romances with glamorous partners including Marlene Dietrich and set up his sports clothing label, featuring the iconic laurel wreath. This pioneering spirit of adventure and entrepreneurship lives on. Dominated by small businesses, ‘The Lane’ proudly maintains its unique, independent character •

Eva Sturt (with Jonathan),part-time language teacher

It could really do with a shoe shop, that shop [Steppin Out, which closed in 2011) was brilliant. Everyone I know is missing that because it was a great all-rounder. Because there are so many kids around, we could also do with some sort of craft place, like Hobbycraft. I think there’s too many hairdressers, but it seems a sign of our times. It was a shame when Robert Dyas went – somewhere you could get almost anything.

Alex Taylor, on a career break after 32 years with BT

I’m not sure anything is missing, actually. It was nice to have a choice of butcher, as the other one [McCreadie’s] has just closed down. And it would be really sad if the fishmongers [TH Carr] closed. We could do with a better greengrocer, though. There’s too many hairdressers – don’t know why we need so many. The thing about Pitshanger is that you don’t need to go to a supermarket, you can make do with what we’ve got here •

From tarka dal to tzatziki in one minute

The latest addition to the veritable salmagundi of cozy restaurants that adorn Pitshanger

Lane is Chez L’ami David, a French bistro of the red and white checked tablecloth kind run by David Escobar, previously head chef at Brompton Road establishment Cassis. There’s a surely reason for David’s choice of location.

As a lifelong (minus 20 months) resident of Pitshanger, I’ve always taken – when crawling up the Lane on the E2/E9 after any significant amount of time away – comfort in peering into the restaurants to see which family friend dines where these days, which places have buffed themselves up, what the new additions are. Often I spot my sister, treating my arrival as just another excuse to go for a coffee at Oscar’s. That relish for getting to the Lane is probably only matched on those more decadent nights when a few beers precede a taxi from the Broadway, anxiously rushing the driver to make sure we’re in time for a

late-night curry at the Samrat. Thankfully, I’m good at persuading them it’s always early enough for what in my humble opinion smashes the competition as the best tarka dal in Ealing (’tis all about the texture – not too runny you see). Truth is, there’s something for everyone, every moment and every season. On a warm day it’s not too much of a stretch to believe the Pizza House’s terrace occupies a pedestrianised street in the Mediterranean (kudos to whoever enlarged the pavements). A Blue Ocean takeaway can always be relied on for reviving the tradition of Friday fish on a wintry night when the grandmothers pop down. For an intimate atmosphere, two stalwarts of the Lane – Lisa’s and Atlantis – offer famous French/English and Greek cuisine, while you can grab a pint or two with your food at the smartened-up Duke of Kent. Any place where the waiters remember your name can’t be bad in my book. Luckily there’s no shortage of that on Pitshanger Lane •

“Truth is, there’s something for

everyone, every moment and

every season”

Olly West takes a tour of the Lane’s choicest places to satisfy hunger

Many of the restaurants and cafes have dining areas outside or in their gardens (Pizza House, top) but winter calls for a cuppa inside cosy Cinnamon (above)

ADVERTORIALFEATURES

Try aromatherapyGive yourself a boost this winterAromatherapy is the controlled therapeutic use of concentrated plant extracts (essential oils) to enhance emotional and physical well-being. During the winter months, aromatherapy can complementarily be used to help with the following issues: Immune system: our immune system is slightly depressed during winter and many of us experience a variety of ailments that can easily be avoided. Using essential oils of Thyme, Tea Tree or Ravintsara through aroma diffusers can really help boost the immune system and ward off infections. Aches and pains: winter dampness can intensify the aches and pains associated with arthritis and rheumatism. Many essential oils can be used to warm and tone the muscular system and help

ease pain in inflamed joints. Essential oils of Sweet Marjoram, Black Pepper or Ginger have a warming, antispasmodic effect. German Chamomile and Juniper Berry are particularly good for inflamed joints due to their analgesic, anti-inflammatory and draining properties. Chest infections: Essential oils of Eucalyptus and Pine in a diffuser can work wonders for day-long help and protection. These oils mixed with Peppermint and Lemon also make a great chest rub. Winter blues: keep cheerful with lots of citrus oils – Mandarin, Sweet Orange, Bergamot and Grapefruit – either in the bath, a diffuser or in a massage blend. These oils contain large quantities of limonene, a chemical compound known to invigorate and refresh the mind, body and spirit.

For more information on our personalised aromatherapy treatments, please contact Leila Denison-Pender on 07814 659 323 or visit our website www.symbiosisaromatherapy.com. Gift vouchers are available.

“There’s a whole

For parents new to Ealing

3 top websites** helping families with pre-school children

They don’t call it “nappy valley” for nothing, judging from the number of pushchairs,

playgroup conversations and pregnant people that fill the streets of Ealing.

But for parents of young children just moving into

the area, where to start figuring out what to do with the (smallish) offspring can be a challenge. Here, then, are three key organisations that any new local pre-schooler mum or dad needs to check out:

“domestic duties are

always a-waiting”

And the beep goes on

with Esther Needle**a W5 businessmum

Forget about the pram in the hall, what’s blocking my creativity is the world’s most annoying washing machine – beep

beep beep. All up and down our road in W5, beep beep beep – washers, dryers, dishwashers, all sounding out a reminder call to any woman working from home that her domestic duties are always a-waiting. When our last washing machine broke down, I thought great: new opportunity to get a beep-less one. And after reading and re-reading specs of all the available options, this one looked promising, and I was happy for a few days. Until a couple of times when I

failed to bound down the stairs two at a time to turn it off, in order to finish a thought, a sentence, an email, another task – and now it’s unstoppable, furious even at ever having been ignored. The beeping that never stops, never turns itself off. Anyway, what I meant to be saying was that being a ‘mumpreneneur’ often means squeezing the housework into... oh dang there it is again: beep, beep, beep... off I go •
