Despite ongoing port delays and the expensive US dollar, global interest in US cars continued to grow during the second quarter of 2015. In total, over 132,505 vehicles were shipped in containers overseas - a 10% increase over last year’s volume.

The strong demand was driven by US car dealers targeting international markets in Europe, Central and South America, as well as the Middle East. Everything from classic cars, new and used cars, to salvage cars were in great demand.

However, not all destinations saw growing demand for US cars. Countries such as Libya, Georgia, Lithuania witnessed large declines in car import volumes due to changes in local or surrounding markets.

With the West Coast Shipping quarterly report we want to show you which markets to target in order to grow your international car business.

Which Cars Are Going Where?

Classic CarsOverseas buyers are continuing their pursuit of classic cars from the US. Everything from classic Ford Mustangs to Porsche 911s and Jaguar E-types are being aquired in the US by buyers from the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand.

New CarsCurrently, car makers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Tesla and Ford are utilizing the flexibility of containers to move new cars from the US to Central America, South America, Europe and Asia. And while the price on new cars remain significantly higher overseas, small businesses will continue to purchase brand new cars in the US and export them to markets such as China for resale.

Used CarsOverseas buyers from the United Arab Emirates, Cambodia, Nigeria and Guatemala particularly enjoy used Lexus, Toyotas and Hyundais from the US. Most of these cars are purchased from Manheim car auctions.

Salvage CarsDid you know that most of the salvage cars in the US get exported to overseas markets? The Middle East and Africa in particular are huge importers of salvaged and damaged US cars purchased from car auctions such as Copart and IAAI.
