(SCC) was founded in 1971

by Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael

in the belief that contemporary

artists had new things to say with

traditional materials, and that they

needed wider opportunities to

exhibit and sell their work. Since

then, SCC has organized more

than 235 exhibitions, created

strong educational and community

outreach programs, established

a satellite gallery and a permanent

Enameled Art JewelrySaturday, June 610 am—5 pminstructor: Jim Bovélevel: allLearn techniques such as sifting, sgraffito, texturing, and stencil use through the colorful art of enameling. Each student will produce at least one pair of earrings, while simple techniques for brooches and necklaces will also be demonstrated.

Business Card Holders & Money Clips Saturday, June 2010 am—5 pminstructor: Jenny Soraccolevel: allLearn metalworking basics like sawing, filing, forming, and soldering while making your own custom business card holder and wallet clips. Students will have the opportunity to personalize with stamping and texturing or can bring along a favorite digital logo file to transfer and etch into metal.

Enameled VesselsSaturday, July 1810 am—5 pminstructor: Jenny Soraccolevel: allExperiment with vitreous and liquid enameling techniques on test tiles before applying enamel to a formed metal vessel. Pre-formed platters, bowls, and dishes will be available to choose from, or students may saw out and form their own shape using the hydraulic press. Each participant will take home three unique food-safe vessels.

Copper Cups: Moscow MulesSaturday & SundayJuly 25 & 2610 am—5 pminstructor: Sharon Masseylevel: allMake your own Moscow Mule cocktail cup out of copper! Using sheet metal and a variety of hammers and forming tools, students will shape the body of the cup and then solder on a bottom. Surface decoration will also be explored.

One-of-a-Kind Belt BucklesSaturday & SundayAugust 1 & 210 am—5 pmH visiting artist: Bryan Scott Petersenlevel: allCreate a one-of-a-kind belt buckle with the artist who organizes the “World Championship Belt Buckle Competition.” Students will utilize processes such as metal forming and cold connections to make a wearable belt buckle that is sure to stand out in a crowd.

Metal Bench RentalsWith the recent addition of benches and lockers, SCC is starting a new bench rental program. Renting a bench provides artists with a locked bench, a locker, and usage of the metals studio when workshops are not in session. Call 412-261-7003 to inquire.

Ceramic Slip CastingSaturday & SundayJuly 18 & 1910 am—5 pminstructor: Chelsey Albertlevel: allCreate functional objects from nontraditional materials! Students will craft cups, teapots, bowls, and plates using slip casting, mold making, and assemblage. Colored slips will be added to decorate the surface and each set will be dipped in a clear glaze and fired to make the work functional.

Botanical Place Settings2 SaturdaysAugust 8 & 151—4 pminstructor: Amanda Wolflevel: allLearn how to use leaves and plant material to imprint botanical motifs onto your own unique clay table setting. Students will craft slab cups, bowls, and plates while using colored slips to decorate the surface. Each set will be dipped in a clear glaze and fired to make them functional.

Bench Jeweler Repair TechniquesSaturday, August 810 am—5 pminstructor: Samantha Skeltonlevel: allTake your bench skills to the next level! Students will learn how to test metal, make bails and jump rings, resize rings, install or replace clasps, fix chains, and more!

Steel Jewelry FabricationSaturday & SundayAugust 15 & 1610 am—5 pmH visiting artist: Lynn Batchelderlevel: allCover the basics of soldering with industrial, mild steel wire and sheet metal. Using traditional metals techniques, students will create component parts for a necklace, learn the differences between steel and non-ferrous metals, and explore finishing techniques.

Cigar Box GuitarFriday, Saturday & SundayJune 5, 6 & 710 am—5 pminstructor: Keun HO Peter Parklevel: allLearn the fundamentals and styles of rustic stringed instruments using found objects as you design your instrument. Students will focus on the safe use of hand and power tools, as well as learn the principals of acoustics. All materials will be provided and everyone will go home with their own cigar box guitar!

Natural Edge BowlSaturday, July 2510 am—5 pminstructor: Linda Van Gehuchtenlevel: intermediateMake a unique wood turned bowl with bark line rim, complete with oil finish. This class will cover tool sharpening, shaping bowls with a bowl gouge, methods for mounting work on the lathe, and reverse turning to finish the foot.

Wood Turned PensSaturday, August 110 am—4 pminstructor: Linda Van Gehuchtenlevel: allGain a solid introduction to turning techniques on the lathe. Students will create both a basic and advanced wood turned pen. High polish finishes and pen assembly will also be covered.

Collapsible StoolSaturday & SundayAugust 29 & 3010 am—5 pminstructor: Tadao Arimotolevel: intermediateWork with master wood artist Tadao Arimoto to create a unique 12-inch stool. Once finished, the stool can be collapsed by pulling just one pin!

Spray Stencils & Book WorkshopWednesday & ThursdayJune 24 & 2510 am—5 pmH visiting artist: Pam Sussmanlevel: allExplore the modern, intricate designs and explosions of color that are possible using graphic stencils with spray inks. Create spread size pages, covers, and endpapers then gather your work into a soft cover book that is bound without any sewing!

Two Journals, 700 YearsFriday, Saturday, & SundayJune 26, 27 & 2810 am—5 pmH visiting artist: Pam Sussmanlevel: allContrast the ornate beauty of a 14th century Florentine style binding with the simple lines of a 21st century notebook. Both are made of leather and serve the same purpose, but are worlds apart in appearance and construction. Students will create two beautiful leather books: one with a historical tacket binding from a 14th century account book/diary and one with a functional modern cover for a multitude of inserts.

Papermaking 101Saturday, July 2510 am—5 pminstructor: Katy Dementlevel: allTry your hand at papermaking! This workshop covers all the basics of papermaking, including discussions on surface design and three-dimensional structures. Students will learn mould building, pulp processing, western sheet forming, embossing, and other techniques.

Electronic Assembly Extravaganza Saturday, June 610 am—5 pminstructor: Ron Nigrolevel: allRe-assemble discarded electronic devices in combination with other found materials to create a mixed media sculpture. Incorporating electric lighting features will also be covered. This is an excellent workshop for teachers looking for some new STEAM activities for their classroom!

This workshop will cover safe cardboard cutting techniques and a variety of assembly methods. Outside, Inside: Form & Content in Fiber SculptureThursday & FridayAugust 6 & 710 am—5 pmH visiting artist: Betty Veralevel: allLearn to convey meaning through fiber! Students will experiment freely with this inspiring and versatile medium before designing and making a small-scale sculpture. Techniques such as knotting, looping, interlacing, and stitching will be covered.

Color & Design for Painted WarpsSaturday & SundayAugust 8 & 910 am—5 pmH visiting artist: Betty Veralevel: allWarp painting offers an unlimited palette, free-flowing designs, and the option to weave different projects on the same warp. Color mixing and appropriate weaves for painted warps will be covered. Students will take home a painted warp on which to weave a small project!

Natural Dyes: Start to FinishSaturday & SundayAugust 22 & 2310 am—5 pminstructor: Jennifer Mosslevel: allLearn to make your own natural dyes from locally sourced plant materials. Students will grasp the wide range of colors available from nature and master how to prep materials, gather dyestuff, and cook their dye. Safety and processes for dying in your home will be covered.

Henna Tattoos & Mehndi ArtFriday, June 126—9 pminstructor: Lia ShafferA local favorite! Learn about the ancient art of henna tattooing in India, Africa, and the Middle East. Students will be guided step-by-step in applying henna designs on their own skin.

Mosaic CoastersFriday, June 196—9 pminstructor: Alix PaulCreate one-of-a-kind coasters by cutting and artfully arranging glass, tile, and other found objects to create unique patterns. This workshop will include materials to make a set of four coasters.

Kreepy DollsFriday, July 176—9 pm

instructor: Daniel BaxterChannel imagination through your finger tips to make a “kreepy doll” with Daniel Baxter, founder of Pittsburgh’s Kreepy Doll Factory. Learn sewing tricks and doll making strategies, including creative needling, string theory, pattern making, and the power of smiling.

Handmade KitesFriday, July 246—9 pminstructor: Katy DementConstruct a traditional fighting kite! Using wood block stamps, students will embellish “lotka,” an artisan paper from Nepal, to create a kite worthy of fight flying and display. Kite makers are invited to submit their completed kites to the exhibit "Dishian, A Time to Fly Kites," which will be presented at Assemble Community Art Space in September.

Laser Cut JewelryFriday, August 76—9 pminstructor: Nora GilchristAssemble unique jewelry from a diverse array of laser-cut wood pieces. Each student will take home a necklace and a pair of earrings. Instruction on basic jewelry assemblage and design will be provided.

CLASS INFORMATION• Students who register by mail or fax will receive a

confirmation e-mail within seven days.• It is the responsibility of the student to appear in class

on the correct day and time without additional notice.• Students may be pictured in SCC promotional materials.• SCC makes every effort to maintain the schedule of

courses as announced in the catalog, however, SCC reserves the right to cancel any course or to substitute faculty when necessary.

MATERIALSInstructors may request that students have certain supplies. Students will receive a list of those supplies upon registration. Unless otherwise noted, materials fees are payable to the instructors for supplies provided by the instructors . Occasionally, the materials fee is built into the tuition fee and this is clearly noted next to the tuition fee.

CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDSClass and workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If a class must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded.Refund Policy: 1-2 Day WorkshopsStudent refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.3-5 Day WorkshopsCancellations with 14 or more days notice:A student may cancel a registration for a three-, four- or five-day workshop up to two weeks prior to the start date of the class. There will be a $50 cancellation fee. Cancellations with fewer than 14 days notice:If a student cancels a registration within two weeks of the start date of a three-, four- or five-day workshop, there will be a 50% cancellation fee.There will be no refund issued without three business days notice of a cancellation.

ONE-ON-ONE & STUDIO RENTALSPrivate lessons in many media can be arranged upon request for students of all ages and skill levels. Private lessons are $50 per hour, with a two-hour minimum. In addition, independent studio use is available during open studio hours and by special arrangement.
