Divider wall under Construction
Brief on Power Project38
Originally the 2000m long power channel connecting the Shiva head works and theShiva Balancing Reservoir had been constructed with a central earthen divider walland side slopes lined with stone pitching. The central divider wall was an earthenbund with stone pitching on the side slopes. The overall dimension of the dividerwall has been 3.7m at the top and 8.2m at the bottom.
Over a period of the last 100 years, the water carrying capacity of the channel hadbeen reduced to 22.6 cumecs, from the original capacity of 34 cumecs, due to silting, vegetation growth, etc. In order to increase the discharge carrying capacity of thechannel, the existing divider wall was replaced by a thin RCC dividing wall; thepitching of the side slopes was reset and covered with RCC lining. The vegetationgrowth was completely removed. After modernization, discharge carrying capacityof the power channel has increased to 59.5 cumecs. The live capacity of ShivaBalancing Reservoir has been substantially increased by desilting the reservoir andremoval of weed growth. During Construction, DG was asked to suggest a simplemethod of desilting of the Balancing Reservoir. A simple technique of using a shovelmounted on a raft made out of a battery of empty steel drums for desilting wassuggested and was used along with the ejection of the silt by a mud pump and apipe line supported on empty floating drums, and thus silt being taken to the shores. The project was completed successfully in the scheduled time and is functioningsatisfactorily.
