THE HEADMASTER’S DESK
CHAPTER 13 The second half of Lythcott-Haims’ book is solution focussed. This chapter is about the need for children to be given unstructured play. An overscheduled, tick-listed childhood tends to be devoid of authentic free play. Play dates tend to be diarised and supervised, instead we should be getting out of children’s way as they play. Play is essential to the healthy development of a child. For healthy psychological development children should be involved in activity that is freely chosen, directed by the child himself and for its own sake. When there is an adult present directing things it is not play. Play should be a child’s “dream time”. The liberty and freedom awarded to a child for play should of course be age appropriate. Lythcott-Haims suggests the following guidelines:
1. Adults should value free play. If it’s not valued it will not be given time. We should embrace play as a developmental requirement.
2. Understand the degree of freedom appropriate to your child. Balance safety concerns with your job as a parent to develop independence and competency through play.
3. Develop a network of like-minded parents to support play-dates where free play can happen.
4. Provide materials for imaginative free play. Providing a lego set where they must follow a set of instructions to build something is not free play. On the other hand if they construct something out of any materials using their imaginations, it is free play.
5. Let the children decide how and what to play. 6. Work on creating distance between yourself and your child at play. Resist the
temptation to intervene. 7. Your child will get hurt when engaged in free play. Provide hugs and a plaster
instead of trying to prevent the upset and sprains that are inevitable in free play. 8. Create a culture of free play out of doors. 9. Visit places that are deliberately constructed to encourage children to explore. 10. Model play. Tinker, practise, do puzzles, play, make, create to demonstrate what
you consider to be fun in your own life. Play is good for children. It aids their development and thinking. It builds capabilities valued in the workplace. Nancy Cotton in the Journal Child Psychiatry and Human Development defines four ways in which play develops competencies needed for the workplace.
1. Play provides opportunities for children to learn, develop and perfect new skills that build competence.
2. Play is the child’s natural mode to master anxiety from overwhelming experiences of everyday life, which builds the capacity to cope with the environment.
Continued on page 3…

3. Play helps build the ego’s capacity to mediate between unconscious and conscious realities, which enhances ego strength.
4. Play repeats or confirms a gratifying experience that fuels a child’s investment in life.
“Keep a child safe and create opportunities for a child to think independently and take risks, build character – that’s part of being a great parent. I’m not failing or neglecting them by doing that – I’m doing what’s right for their future.” Hanna Rosin: 2014 Reference: How to Raise an Adult – Julie Lythcott-Haims (2015) Back to the top
