Container Traffic Back to Normal at India’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port
Rail shipment shifts allow congestion to ease after weeks of chaos
The movement of ocean containers to and from Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal at India’s busiest
Port of Jawaharlal Nehru has returned to normalcy after weeks of disarray.
State-owned rail operator Container Corp. of India on Friday said it shifted a major portion of accumulated
import containers destined for the Tughlakabad inland container depot to its nearby off-site storage facility,
restoring normal operations at the private terminal operated by DP World.
“Following this, the backlog of inland boxes in the port terminals dropped considerably to a level of 5,300 20-
foot equivalent units as of Thursday compared with 7,200 TEUs as of May 24,” Concor said.
The company, the country’s largest intermodal logistics provider, said all fresh import arrivals bound for its
Tughlakabad depot would now be railed direct from the terminal yards.
Concor earlier asked the trade to nominate other northern depots such as Dadri and Rewari for delivery of
import shipments until congestion problems at its Tughlakabad facility dissipated.
Located near Delhi, Tughlakabad is the country’s biggest inland terminal with annual capacity of 400,000 TEUs.
Persistent delays at the private terminal gates earlier also prompted protests from long-haul truckers, calling for
immediate remedial measures to speed truck traffic.
NSICT, Nehru’s second-largest container terminal, handled 1.53 million TEUs in fiscal 2009-10 ended March 31
compared with 1.43 million TEUs the previous year. Consolidated throughput at Nehru increased to 4.06 million
TEUs from 3.95 million TEUs, while volume in April surged to 377,000 TEUs from 315,000 TEUs on a year-on-
year basis.
