OpportunityisawordthatmeansalottoMuuxiAdam.Asa
teenager,hewasheldhostagefor18monthsinagarage
inhisnativeSomalia–acountrybatteredbycivilwarfornearly
twodecades.Withchainsonhislegs,hewasforcedtowork
morethan16hoursperdayinagarage,fixingcarsandcarrying
heavyequipment,withoutpayandwithlittlefood.Theexperience
instilledinhimadeepdesiretohelpothersinneed.
Threeyearsago,MuuxiAdam(pronouncedMoxie)came
toCanadaasarefugee,carryingwithhimagoal:togetan
education.Today,heisaUniversityofWinnipegartsstudent,
filmmaker,andheworksforayouthmentorshipprogramat
WelcomePlace.Heismajoringininternationaldevelopment
studies,andlearningaboutideas,economicsandfilm.Hehas
alreadymadeafilmcalledRay of HopewiththeNationalFilm
Board,andiscurrentlyworkingonafilmaboutHIVandAIDS.
Lastyear,Adamreceiveda$1200bursaryfromThe
OpportunityFund–aninnovativenewbursaryprogram
launchedlastyeartargetedtowardsstudentswhoare
traditionallyunder-representedatTheUniversityofWinnipeg.
TheOpportunityFundopensadoorofpossibilitiestoyouth
frominner-cityneighbourhoods,Aboriginalstudents,young
peoplefromwar-affectednationsandrefugeepopulations.
Adamsaysitmadeabigdifferencetohim.Heexplainsthat
itisverydifficultfornewCanadianstogethigh-payingjobs,
andtheyfacemultiplebarriersduetodifferencesinlanguage
andculture.
“Youneedpeoplewhoareeducated,tobeabletointegrate
(thesociety)andtomovethiscountryforward.Wearenew
Canadians,whichmeansthatwewillbetomorrow’sfuture.You
needtoinvestinyourfuture-Idon’tthinktheyshouldlookat
uslikethey’reinvestinginimmigrants,Ithinktheyshouldlook
atitlikethey’reinvestinginthefuture,innewCanadians.”

UniversitystaffidentifiedJennerasastrongcandidateforThe
OpportunityFundbursaryprogrambasedonanessayshewrote.
Itdetailedherrecoveryfrommethaddictionandthedestructive
impactithadonherlife,andexplainedtheworkshehaddoneto
helpotherstryingtoovercomeaddiction.
OpportunityFundbursariessupporttuition,books,supplies,
andotherlivingexpenses(includinghousing,food,childcare,
andtransportation)dependingonthestudent’sfinancialneeds
(uptoavalueof$5,000)andmayberenewable.
Withoutthebursary,Jennersaysshewouldn’thavebeenable
toafforduniversity.“Itgivespeoplethatwouldn’totherwisehave
achance,achance,”sheexplains.

After24yearsofinvolvementwiththeWesmenand
TheUniversityofWinnipeg,BillWedlakeisretiringfrom
hispositionasathleticdirector.Hehasworkedwithvisionand
dedicationatUWinnipegsince1984,whenhebecameheadcoach
oftheMen’sBasketballteam.Hehasservedasathleticdirector
since2000.
“Billstrivesforexcellence,”saidDoranReid,associateathletic
director.“BillWedlakehastheenergyofa30-year-old.Hiswork
ethicwillbemissed.”
Wedlakeiscreditedformanyachievementsduringhistenure
attheUniversity,includingincreasingattendance,creating
winningteamsandintroducingscholarshipopportunitiesforall
oftheWesmenathletes.
BeforecomingtoTheUniversityofWinnipeg,Wedlakespent
16yearscoachingvarsityboy’sbasketballathisoldhighschool,
St.John’s,wherehealsotaughtgeography,historyand
socialstudies.
“Whenallfour[Wesmen]teamswerenumberoneinthe
countryatthesametime,”saidWedlake,“itwasoneofthe
manyhighlightsofmycareer.”
“He’sraisedtheprofileofWesmenAthletics,”saidReid.
“AsacoachBillisverymeticulous,takingcareofallthedetails
whichtranslatedintosuccessasathleticdirector.”
In2005,WedlakewasinductedintotheBasketballHallof
Fame,onthesecondflooroftheDuckworthCentre,forhis
work,promotionanddedicationtothesportofbasketballin
theprovince.
“FormetojoinmybrotherintheBasketballHallofFameis
really,reallyspecial,”saidWedlake.
Overtheyearsasathleticdirector,andasacoach,Wedlake
hasgreatlyincreasedparticipationintheannualWesmenClassic
andthelocalmen’sleague.Originallyconsistingoflessthan15
teams,theWesmenClassicnowboastsmorethan100teams
participatinginthewintertournament.Healsointroduceda
scholarshipprogramthatoffersfulltuitionforanystudentathlete
thatachievesAll-Canadianstatus.ManyWesmenathletesnow
takeadvantageoffundraisingefforts,earningtheirtuition
throughthescholarshipprogram.
Wedlakealsomadeagreatcontributiontotherenewal
andexpansionoftheDuckworthCentre.Inappreciationof
Wedlake’sdedicationandcommitmentthenewfacilityhas
beennamedTheBillWedlakeFitnessCentre.
“Iwassurprisedandoverwhelmed,”saidWedlake,onthe
namingofthefitnesscentre.

FitnessCentre,inhonorofretiringAthleticDirectorBillWedlake
forhis24yearsofoutstandingcontributionstotheUniversity.
TheBillWedlakeFitnessCentrecoversnearly6,000squarefeet
inareaandfeaturesbrandnewstate-of-the-artcardioequipment,
