  • USING MENUSWhen you play SONIC & KNUCKLES COLLECTION in awindow, you will be able to access the menu items at anytime. To access a menu, move the arrow pointer to the menutitle on the menu bar and press the Left mouse button. Toselect an item from the menu, move the pointer down tohighlight the item and click the Left mouse button. You cantoggle between full screen display and window view using the F4 Key.

    SONIC & KNUCKLES COLLECTIONruns in Windows 95/98 only.

    To play SONIC & KNUCKLES COL-LECTION in Windows 95/98, followthese steps:

    1. Place the SONIC & KNUCKLESCOLLECTION in the CD-ROM drive,label side up. Close the tray.

    2. After a few moments, a dialog box willappear, giving you a choice of options.

    The first time you insert the SONIC &KNUCKLES COLLECTION CD-ROM,the dialog box will give you the option ofinstalling the game or exiting the pro-gram.Select INSTALL to begin the installation process.

    If you have a special brand video cardlike Diamond (www.diamondmm.com),

    STB (www.stb.com), #9 (www.nine.com), SIS (www.chips.com), orMatrox Millineum (www.matrox.com), youwill need to download special direct xdrivers from their website.

    If you do not wish to install SONIC &KNUCKLES COLLECTION at this time,select CANCEL. If you already haveDirectX3 you do not have to re-install DX3.

    Under Windows 95/98, the SONIC &KNUCKLES COLLECTION installation procedure analyzes your spe-cific system configuration and loads theappropriate driversfor your sound card and video display card. In addition, SONIC &KNUCKLES COLLECTION will create a new program group called SONIC & KNUCKLES COLLECTION and place the SONIC &KNUCKLES COLLECTIONprogram icon in that group.

  • START-UP SAVE GAMEFEATURE

    The Sonic & Knuckles Collectiondisc has a special Save GameFeature that allows you to storegame data for up to six differentgames. Each game you save will bestored in one of the six Game SaveWindows.

    After selecting one-player, the GameSave Feature screen will appear. Tostart a game, select a

    Game Save Window from one of the6 slots. They are initially labeledNEW. Press the Directional KeysUP or DOWN to select which char-acter you want to control. Next, pressthe ENTER Key to begin a game.After your game is over, or if youselect RESET, your game will auto-matically be saved in the slot youselected.

    *To play a game without saving,select the window with the NoSave option.

    *If you finish the game and collect all of the Chaos Emeralds,you will be able to play in any Zoneby pressing the Direction Keys UP orDOWN at the finished Game SaveWindow slot.

  • RingsDefend Floating Island by collecting gold rings.

    *Collect as many rings as you canfor high score and protection fromenemy hits or hazards.

    *When your character hits a trap,or gets attacked by a Badnik, yourcharacter will lose his rings. Whenhe has no rings, an enemy hit costsyour character one life.

    *In Special and Bonus Stages, youearn a Continue when you grab 50rings.

    *Grab 100 rings and get an extra life!

    BadniksEach time you defeat a Badnik, itbreaks apart and the animaltrapped inside is freed!

    BossesAt the end of every Zone, you mustdefeat an extra-nasty Boss speciallycreated by Dr. Robotnik.

    Note: You cannot save a Sonic &Knuckles game, only Sonic 3 andSonic 3 & Knuckles have a savegame feature.

    Restarting a Saved GameAt the main title screen, choose a 1 or2 player game and select which char-acter you want to control. Select theGame Save Windows you want tobegin playing and press the ENTERKey. You can only restart a game fromthe last Zone in which it was saved.

    Erasing a Saved GameUse the Direction Keys to highlight Dr.Robotnik and press the ENTER Key.Next, move the cursor to the GameSave Window that you want to delete.Press the ENTER Key again andselect YES to confirm your choice.

    PLAY AS SONIC,TAILSor knucklesFrom the main title screen, youcan choose to play a one-playergame and then select to controlSonic, Tails or Sonic and Tails together.

    Note: In Sonic & Knuckles, you canchoose Sonic or Knuckles. In Sonic 3,you can choose Sonic, or Sonic & Tails.In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, you can chooseSonic, Sonic & Tails, Tails, or Knuckles.

    GOALSAs Sonic, Tails and Knuckles explore the exciting Zones, you must helpthem collect gold Rings and locate the Chaos Emeralds. The following isa detailed rundown of your goals for the game.

  • SONIC SUPERMOVES

    Spin Dash AttackBlast through obstaclesor smash a Badnik withthis power-packedmaneuver.

    Hold the Direction KeyDOWN while pressingthe ENTER Key. Whenyou release theDirectional Key, yourcharacter will shoot forward.

    Tails To The RescueWhile playing a one-play-er game with Sonic andTails together, use Player2’s keys to control Tails. Use Tails tolift Sonic out of danger or to areaswhich are unreachable bySonic alone.

    Insta-ShieldQuickly press the ENTERKey twice and youll gen-erate enough energy tobe protected by a shieldfor a split second.

    Make Tails Fly or SwimQuickly press Player 2’sJUMP keys (default"a")twice, and your character will fly or swim(for a limited time) if it isnecessary.

    TimeThe Time Limit for each Act is 10 minutes. If you take too long and the Time Limit runs out, you must repeat the Act. Zip past Star Posts dur-ing the Act, and you’ll only have to repeat from the last Star Post you passed.

    LivesYou begin the game with 3 lives. If you lose a life, you must restart the Act from the last Star Post you passed. If you lose all your lives, thegame ends.

    ContinuesYou earn one Continue for every 50 rings you collect in the Special andBonus Stages. Continues are worth a whopping 3 lives each!

    When you lose all 3 of your original lives, but have earned Continues,you’ll see the Continue screen. Then, you have 10 seconds to press theENTER Key and get back into the game.

    Once you press the ENTER Key, you will re-enter the game at the last Star Post you passed.

  • POWER-UPS

    Super RingThis is worth 10 GoldRings.

    InvincibilityNo Badniks can harmyour character whenhe activates this iconand becomes invinci-

    ble for a short time. Some movingobjects are still harmful, so becareful.

    Flame ShieldProtects Sonic,Knuckles and Tailsfrom a fire attack.

    When this shield is activated, Soniccan perform a mid-air Fireball SpinDash by leaping into the air andpressing the ENTER Key.

    Water ShieldSonic, Knuckles and Tails canbreathe underwater and Sonic canbounce like a ball. Sonic can alsodefeat most Badniks by bouncingon their heads when you are sur-rounded by the Water Shield bubble.

    Lightning ShieldWhen activated, Gold Rings willgravitate toward Sonic, Knuckles orTails. This shield will also protects you from electric attacks and energy ball attacksfrom Badniks. While this shield is active, Sonic can double jump in mid-air (quickly press the ENTER Key twice).

    KNUCKLES SIGNA-TURE MOVES

    Glide Press the ENTER Key twice

    quickly - once to get some air and again to start gliding.Press the Direction Keys LEFT or RIGHT for direction.

    Gliding Knuckles Attack Press the ENTER Key twice to

    start gliding. Put Knuckles’ best fists

    forward to knock out Badniks. Perform this attack just like the Glide and whack into robots on the fly!

    Wall ClimbGet close to a wall and press the the ENTER Key twice quickly - once to jump, and a second time to stick to the wall or vertical surface.Press the Direction Keys UP/DOWN to climb.Press the ENTER Key to jump off.

  • SPECIAL STAGEWithin every Act, youll discover atleast one hidden room containing agiant Gold Ring. When you leap intothe ring, youll teleport you into theSpecial Stage.

    Be careful, however, because thelonger you stay in the Special Stage,the faster it gets!

    * To make Gold Rings appear, look for square formations of blue spheres, then grab the spheres along the outer edge of the square. All of the blue spheres that make up the square will turn into Gold Rings.

    * Grab the blue spheres. If you get them all, you win a Chaos Emerald.

    * Collect 50 rings and youll be awarded a Continue.

    * Grab a yellow sphere to catapult for a distance of 5 spheres.

    * Red and white star spheres are bumpers that ricochet you in the opposite direction.

    * Dodge the red spheres (Hint: Try jumping over them.)

    1-UPThis power-up is worth one extralife.

    Super ShoesHigh-speed sprinting shoes.Watch your character go!

    RobotnikDanger! Activating this power-down icon causes the sameamount of damage toyour character as an attack froma Badnik. You will either loseyour characters Gold Rings, orwithout Gold Rings, lose a life.

    The Bonus Stages Gumball MachineGrab extra 1-Ups, bonus power-ups and Gold Rings by turning the crank of this special GumballMachine. To find this Bonus Stage, collect 50 or moreGold Rings during a single Act, activate a Star Post andthen leap into the tiny stars that appear.

    The Bonus Stages Power-Ups

    Barrier ShieldGrab a ’B’ gumball and your character will be rewarded with a randomtype of shield.

    Spring BarrierEach time your character bounces off the catapultsbelow the Gumball Machine, it will disappear. Grabbing a’REP’ gumball will replace the catapults. When yourcharacter falls past the catapults, he will automatically exitthe Bonus Stage.

    Super RingThese gumballs are worth10 Gold Rings.

    1-UPEarn an extra life.

    Bumper GumballsBounce off of thesegumballs.

    Clear GumballsThe joke is on you!Nothing happens if yourcharacter grabs a cleargumball in The Bonus Stage.

    Glowing Spheres Stage

    You are stuck to a magneticsphere! Roll to the top of thesphere and then jump to a higher one. Activate the flippers tohelp you to the top.

    Look out for the force field creep-ing up from below!

    Slot Machine Stage

    Collect rings when the tumblers roll. Jump toward the cen-ter to stay in the game.

    Collect 50 rings in any Bonus Stage andwin 1 Continue.

    Grand Prix ModeExperience all five of the two-player Zones as you competeagainst a second player and raceagainst time.

    Match RaceI ts a race against time as you com-pete against a second player in anyone of the two-player Zones that youselect.

    Time AttackThis is a one-player practice modethat will help you prepare for a two-player competition. Select and practice in any one of the five two-player Zones. Your goal is to move as quickly as possible.

    Get ready for the new and improved two-player action. Even if you’ve mastered this game’s 12 one-playerZones. There are five totally uniqueZones, and three different gameplaymodes in two-player, split-screen mode.

    SONIC SUPERPLAY TIPS

    *Grab Gold Rings. Theywill provide protectionfrom Badniks and obsta-cles, help you earn extralives and enter The BonusStage.

    *When you lose the GoldRings you’re holding, quickly re-grabas many of them as possi-ble. Earning 100 GoldRings will earn you oneextra life. Having 20 GoldRings when you activate aStar Post allows you toenter the Bonus Stage.

    Note: You collect 50 or morerings in Sonic 3.

    *Always be on the lookout for hidden roomand passageways. Look for differentpatterns in the walls. Youcan smash open somesolid walls by performing a Spin DashAttack. You can also usethis move to smash openrock formations.

    *Beware of Badniks thatshoot energy weapons.Even if you keep your dis-tance from the Badnik,their weapons can reachyou and cause your char-acter to lose a life. If youmust get past a series ofBadniks, spend a fewmoments watching themas you learn how theymove. Be sure to timeyour attack perfectly.

    *Dont forget, in SonicThe Hedgehog 3, Tailshas the ability to help Sonic. When caughtin a difficult situation, use PlayerTwo’s control to take con-trol of Tails. Press the AKey twice to make Tails fly.

    *Always look for ways toimprove your point score.Defeating Badniks, col-lecting Gold Rings andgetting through each Actas quickly as possible(for a Time Bonus) are allexcellent ways to boostyour score.

  • *Prepare yourself totravel underwater in thevarious Zones.Remember, Soniccan’t last too longunderwater withoutbreathing, so jump intogiant air bubbles thatrise from the ground. Ifyou wait too long,Sonic will drown (losea life). Activating aWater Shield allowsSonic to breathe under-water until the shieldbreaks.

    *Learn to use Sonic’snew power-up movesand shields. They willprove to be extremelyvaluable as you helpSonic and Tails trekacross The FloatingIsland in search of Dr. Robotnik.

    *Use Sonic’s SpinDash Attack to climbup steep hills.

    *When an Act’s endlevel marker appears,leap towards it before itlands and an extrapower-up might appear.

    *In the IceCap Zoneand throughout thegame, avoid havingyour character getstuck in passageways.You might get caught intraps. Have your char-acter activate StarPosts or enter into aSpecial Stage as quick-ly as possible.

    *Dr. Robotnik has created many diabolical traps whichtake advantage of yourSonics ultra-fastspeed. Watch out fortraps that Sonic cannotescape. If you fall intothe wrong trap, youmight have to reset thegame and start again atthe beginning of theZone you were last in.When Sonic is flashing (after being hit)dont let him travel tooquickly.

    To Install:

    1) Insert disc into CD-ROM drive.

    2) Choose EXIT andthen OK .

    3) Right mouse click onSonic 3K CD ROM discicon and select OPENfrom the menu.

    4) Double left mouseclick on the SonicSSFolder.

    5) Double left mouseclick on SET-UP .

    6) From the SonicScreen Saver Set-UpScreen, click onINSTALL .

    7) Choose where on yourhard drive you want toinstall the program and hitOK. (Program runsunder both Windows 3.1and Windows 95/98).

    8) Choose a MinimumInstall, or a CustomInstall. Custom Installallows you multiple resolutions for the background pictures.Here you can choose thepicture size and type ofbackground music for your game.

    To the left side of thescreen is the EffectInventory. This containsa collection of availablebackground music, pic-ture and animationeffects. You will usethese effects to customize your ownSonic Screen Saver.Use the LEFT/RIGHTarrows to togglebetween the various items.

    To begin customizingyour screen saver, usethe mouse to drag the effects into theirappropriate spot in theEdit Window (center

    of screen).

    Once you have placedall the effects in theirdesired position in theEdit Window, click onS AVE to preview yournew screen saver. ClickAPPLY to savechanges to your newscreen saver.

    Click on OK to close the display andreturn to the Properties Window.

    EDIT MENUHere you can tailor the screen saver toyour own specifications. Arrange thebackground music, graphics and animation any way you like. Here’s how:

    To Adjust Your Screen SaverSettings After It Has BeenInstalled for Windows 95/981) Right mouse click on

    the desktop.

    2) Choose Properties.

    3) Click on the Screen Saver Tab.

    4) Choose the Sonic Screen Saver as the current screen saver.

    5) Click on the Settings Button.

    6) Click on Editor to tailor the special effects and music, then you can save the settings.

    Software, Inc. grants you this license and your continued use confirms your agreement. Therefore, you musttreat the software “just like a book,” with the following single exception: Expert Software, Inc. authorizes you tomake archival copies of the software for the sole purpose of backing up your software and protecting yourinvestment from loss.

    By saying “just like a book,” Expert Software, Inc. means, for example, that the software may be used by anynumber of people and may be freely moved from one computer to another, so long as there is no possibility ofbeing used at one location while it’s being used in another. To the original buyer only, Expert Software, Inc. warrants the disk or diskson which this product is recorded to be free of defects in material and workmanship under normal use for a peri-od of 90 days from the purchase date. Any implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular pur-pose are limited in duration to the period of 90 days from the date of purchase. Your sole and exclusive remedyin the event of a defect in material or workmanship under normal use is expressly limited to replacement of thedefective item.
