¯ All R series jacketed liners designated as XC can be air, oil, or water cooled.
¯ Thrust collars convert the standard housing into a non-expansion bearing.
¯ Short series housings require less shaft space and are for expansion bearings only.
¯ 3-7/16″ and larger bore housings are pre-machined for thermocouples, heaters, thermostats, vibration detectoradapter kits, auxiliary seal kits, end cap kits and circulating oil kits.
¯ 3-15/16 - 8″ water cooled replacement (WC repl) liners fit in the R series housings.
¯ PLXC Liners will not fit in old WC housings; R Series housing is required.
The inner liner of the RTL has a center cavity which pro-vides flooding lubrication to the thrust plates. This cavityacts as a reservoir to provide lubrication even during start-up and divides the radial area into two individual load sec-tions. A single thrust collar is required. If a split collar isused, a shaft recess is necessary.
Coolant chambers, which cool both the thrust plates andradial load sections, are of sufficient size to allow the useof water, air, or oil as the internal coolant.
Expansion pillow blocks are furnished as standard. Whennon--expansion blocks are specified, a thrust collar andthrust plate kit are required.
General Operating CharacteristicsRTL pillow block blocks offer excellent radial and thrustload capacities. Large coolant chambers provide espe-cially effective heat dissipation when used with circulat-ing coolant systems. This provides exceptionally strongbearing performance near high heat sources or gases.

P Series Pedestal
General Operating CharacteristicsP Series pedestal bearings are designed to operate in avery wide range of speeds, with bi--directional, tin bab-bitted radial and thrust bearing profiles. A superior oilring and a large number of fins on both the inboard andoutboard sides of the lower housing allow cooler opera-tion.
The P Series Pedestal Bearing is dimensionally inter-changeable with all DIN 31690 and ISO11687--1 bear-ings. All components are fully split. Housings are pre--machined for thermocouples, circulating oil, heaters andthermostats. The P Series is used on motors, genera-tors, fans, test stands, dynamometers, pumps, compres-sors and other turbomachinery. Housing sizes 9--22 arestandard. Other sizes are available.

Important—Ratings apply to both Standard and Short Series(SSL) SLEEVOIL pillow blocks. For SLEEVOIL RTL and RXTpillow blocks use data sheet on page B12--9 and consultDODGE.Follow the steps below to check whether the particular bearing inquestion has an adequate load rating. For operating conditionsother than listed under “Basis of Load Ratings”—consult factory.Step 1. Depending on the type of bearing used, refer to either thesecond or third column in Table 20 on the following page. Using theactual thrust load to be carried by the bearing and interpolatingbetween the thrust loads given in the column, trace to the right tothe column headed by the actual RPM and note the “EquivalentRPM”. Interpolate when required in this and the following steps.Step 2. Depending on the type of bearing used, refer to the ap-plicable one of Tables 20 thru 23. Using the Equivalent RPM,note the radial load rating. Disregard the SAE number of the oil.
If the rating is less than the actual radial load, either a larger or adifferent type bearing, for example externally cooled instead ofplain, is required.Step 3. Multiply the actual radial load by the Equivalent RPMand divide this product by the actual RPM. This result must notbe greater than the bearing rating at the actual RPM. If greater,either a larger or a different type bearing is required. If the bear-ing rating is adequate, note the SAE number of the required oil.Step 4. Refer to Table 20. From whichever one of the second orthird columns that was used in Step 1, trace right to the applica-ble one of the fourth, fifth or sixth columns.Note the minimumradial load required by the actual thrust load. If the actual radialload exceeds this requirement, the bearing selected has ade-quate capacity.
Basis of Load RatingsLoad ratings are based on the four operating conditions statedbelow. For other conditions consult DODGE.1. The oil specified under each rating should be used. The useof a different oil may reduce the allowable load and speed.Theoils listed are:SAE10 Oil: 183 SUS at 100 F or 46 SUS at 210 F.SAE20 Oil: 348 SUS at 100 F or 57 SUS at 210 F.SAE30 Oil: 489 SUS at 100 F or 65 SUS at 210 F.2. The resultant radial load should be located within the 135 pre-ferred zone—see drawing. If located outside this the allowableload and speed are reduced

4. Ratings are based on an ambient (surrounding) temperature of90 F and the assumption that, if the shaft transmits heat from anexternal source such as an oven, the shaft temperature at thebearing will not exceed 90 . Higher temperatures will reduce (andlower temperatures increase) the allowable load and speed.
Special Construction and ConditionsLoad and speed may be increased by certain means such asdecreased temperatures and changes in clearances betweenbearing and shaft—consult DODGE. For operating conditionsnot covered, for special high capacity units with hydrostatic orsegmented thrust members, or for optimum computer selectionfor special applications—consult DODGE.
EXAMPLES OF SELECTIONExample No. 1Check the adequacy of a 3′ 15/6″ SLEEVOIL plain pillow blockto carry 1800 pounds actual radial load and 130 pounds actualthrust load at 700 RPM.Step 1. Refer to the second column in Table 20. The actualthrust load of 130 pounds is between the 0 and 336 valueslisted. Trace to the right to the column headed by the actual RPMof 700 and obtain 951 Equivalent RPM by interpolation betweenthe 700 and 1350 values listed.Step 2. Refer to Table 21. For 1000 Equivalent RPM note theradial load rating of 2990 which is adequate.Step 3. 1800 Actual radial load x 1000÷ 700 = 2570.This is notgreater than the 2920 rating in the 700 RPM column; hence, thebearing is adequate. Note that SAE30 oil is required.Step 4. Interpolating in the fourth column of Table 20 between the 0and 790 values, the minimum radial load required is 305 pounds.The actual radial load of 1800 pounds meets this requirement.Because Steps 2, 3 and 4 checked satisfactorily, the bearing isadequate for the actual loads to be carried.
Example No. 2Check the adequacy of a 4-7/16″ SLEEVOIL plain pillow block tocarry 1800 pounds actual radial load and 350 pounds actualthrust load at 700 RPM.Step 1. Refer to the second column in Table 20. The actualthrust load of 350 pounds is between the 342 and 909 valueslisted. Trace to the right to the column headed by the actualRPM of 700 and obtain 1405 Equivalent RPM by interpolationbetween the 1360 and 1480 values listed.Step 2. Refer toTable 21. For 1387 Equivalent RPM note theradial load rating of 2555 which is adequate.Step 3. 1800 Actual radial load x 1387÷ 700 = 3570.This isnot greater than the 3770 rating in the 700 RPM column; hence,the bearing is adequate. Note that SAE30 oil is required.Step 4. Refer to the fourth column in Table 20. Note that for350 pounds thrust load, the minimum radial load requirementis 1000 pounds. The actual radial load of 1800 pounds meetsthis requirement.Because Steps 2, 3 and 4 checked satisfactorily, the bearing isadequate for the actual loads.

SLEEVOIL
A number of standard options are available for allSLEEVOIL bearings (See Fig. 4). These non-standardcomponents can be used to enhance overall bearing per-formance in a number of ways, including significant ex-pansion of the bearing’s operating envelope, maintainingconsistent performance in extremely changeable or hos-tile surroundings, improved system diagnostic capabili-ties, and more. The ten most common options are listedbelow. (Note: Additional modifications can be designedfor special applications.)
Thermocouple—Monitors bearing’s babbitt temperatureto help protect system against abnormal operating condi-tions.
Circulating Oil-Provides controlled delivery of oil regard-less of shaft surface speed. Provides more rapid heatdissipation, constantly cleans oil, and floods bearing jour-nal, all of which allows significantly higher speed opera-tion.
Heater & Thermoswitch-Maintains consistent bearing oilsump temperature on startup in cold environments.
Vibration Detector Kit-Attaches vibration sensors tobearing housing to allow constant monitoring of systembalance.
Auxiliary Seals-Provide additional protection from envi-ronmental contaminants and locations where high velocityair flows over the bearing.End Cap-Closes off bearing housing in short shafted ap-plications.Air Seal-Provides air pressure balance on both sides ofhousing and prevents oil loss due to fan suction.Electrical Insulation-Prevents conduction ofjournal generated electricity to the ground or back toother system components such as electric motors orgenerators.Hydrostatic Oil Lift-Maintains fully developed oil film bypressurized oil delivery to bearing journal load zone.Used primarily for slow speed operation or startup underextremely heavy loads.
