Obituary

It is with great sadness to announce

the passing away of Mrs Devkorben Ishvarlal Khatri who passed away on 10th May 2010

at the age of 88 years in Navsari, India.

Our prayers go out to their family and friends and pray that her soul rests in eternal peace.

Fire Safety Report Following the recent publication of the fire

safety officer’s report, the Committee are

taking the remedial actions recommended.

The following are some major points of note:

(a) We regret to inform the community

members that the maximum people that are

permitted in the hall be now be reduced to 60

persons. We are still in negotiation regarding

this matter.

(b) No gas cylinders can be stored at the hall.

Therefore those persons wanting to use the

burners are advised to make their own

arrangements to hire the cylinders.

(c) New fire safety signs have been put up at

the SKA Hall, take some time to read on your next visit.

Since the last newsletter, the SKA committee members have been busy contacting business owned by our community and outside businesses to advertise in for the Director & Souvenir Guide and have made good progress. The SKA organised a pilgrimage to Skanda

Vale Temple on Saturday 15th May 2010.

32 Devotees made the 220mile, 4.5 hours

coach trip to this quite tranquil setting

located between the stunning hills and

valleys of the Carmarthan, South Wales.

The journey started from Church Lane,

Kingsbury at 7am and arrived at the Centre

at 11.30 am. Members had time to take in

the stunning surroundings before the first

Pooja, which this took place at the Murugan

Temple. Thereafter lunch/prasad was served,

several of our members kindly volunteered

to help out.

After lunch/prasad members had the

opportunity to stroll the vast 115 acre

grounds. This included a visit to the bird

sanctuary, were many tropical birds can be

found.

The second Pooja took place at the Maha

Shakti Temple at 7pm, lasting about 1.5

hours. Thereafter the coach departed at

about 9pm and arrived back in the early

hours of the next day. Members were

fortunate to be blessed with good weather

throughout the whole trip.

Those who attended benefited from a truly

different spiritual experience.

Events Diary Please contact or email the editor (editor@skauk.org) of any function you wish to put on this Events Diary which will be continually updated in future newsletters and on SKAuk.org website. This helps other members plan their function and avoid clashing of events.

Social Evening

The next social evening will be on Friday 2nd July 2010 (followed by Friday 6th August 2010). We were pleased that the Easter Friday Social Evening had a good turnout with many ladies attending as well. To encourage more vegetarians to attend, we have decided to organise outside catering. We now have two external helpers serving and cleaning during the social evening. Please inform Mr Bharat Vakharia by Thursday 1st July 2010 at the latest if you are attending. This helps having the appropriate amount of food is available. For those who do not inform Bharatbhai in advance, there will be an additional surcharge of £5 per person for the food . From now on a maximum of 60 people will be allowed. Anyone calling after this number has been reached will be turned down. Call Bharat Vakharia

2011 Mahotsav Next year’s Annual Mahotsav date and venue

has now been fixed. It will be held on Sunday 4th September 2011 at Brent Town Hall.

Annual General Meeting

The AGM this year will be held on Sunday 24

th October 2010

at the SKA Hall from 3pm to 7pm.

Cricket & BBQ Day This year's Cricket/BBQ will take place on the 4th July 2010. The menu will consist of Kebab's and Chicken Biryani for Non-Vegetarians and Chhola Bhatura and Pilau Rice for vegetarians along with Salad and Naan for all. We are planning to arrange bouncy castle and Ice cream van at the event. Due to a complaint from the management at last year’s event, no outside alcohol will be permitted at the grounds. Any member caught entering the grounds with a alcohol bottle or mixed with soft drink, which has not been purchased from the bar will be asked to kindly remove its contents. We would like to remind all members, that the grounds are hired to the community at a heavily discounted rate on the understanding that all alcoholic drinks consumed on the day are purchased at the bar. Please do not embarrass yourselves and spoil other people's enjoyment. This year we are calling for all cricket lovers to dust down their whites and participate in a cricket match. With the explosion of 20/20 cricket we are hoping to reinvigorate the public’s interest. Young or old, good or not so good, we'll have great fun, so please fill the attached form and return at the earliest opportunity. The cut-off date for booking will be 24th June 2010. SKA 2010 Members Directory In recent months the Committee have been working diligently on gathering the information to prepare our 50th

Anniversary brochure and have made good progress. We have had excellent support from both within the Community and externally, advertising space is almost sold out!! Anyone still wishing to advertise should look at the

last newsletter for more information immediately.

The Committee has also recently decided that, in order to further enhance the value of the brochure, an

abbreviated version of the SKA Directory will be included in the brochure. Essentially, this will include the name of the head of the family, their address and telephone number. In order to facilitate this we have enclosed with this

newsletter a form which all members of the Community are requested to complete and return by 30 June 2010.

We are also taking this opportunity to obtain additional information and, in particular, email addresses for all

members, with the ultimate objective of making this information available within the SKA Directory in the revised SKA website. Work on the website has progressed and a Beta version is currently undergoing review and testing.

The Directory information will be kept on a secure, password protected, area of the website and will not be available to non-community members. Each member’s registration will have to be approved by the Website

Administrator to further ensure that unauthorised non-Community Members are unable to register.

The Committee are fully aware of the confidential nature of the information and, therefore, they are also

endeavouring to ensure the brochures which will be distributed, for example, to our non-Community advertisers will not have the abbreviated Directory information.

The form does contain an ‘opt-out’ for individuals who do not wish to have their information published on the

website. However, we would encourage everyone to allow for this information to be published on the website. We

would also take this opportunity to remind everyone that our ultimate objective is to communicate with the Community via email. The internet is now the way of the world and SKA, like any other charitable organisation, has

to operate in an efficient manner.

A stamped self addressed envelope is enclosed so please return the completed forms as soon as possible and no later than 30 June 2010.
