Cambridge Assessment Adventures in English 1 Parent’s Guide

Introduction

Overview for parents

This game was created to help students improve their English and for students to have fun too.

These notes were created to help parents (and their children).

You and your child do not need to be familiar with Minecraft to play this game.

The mission In the game, your child is on a mission. At the start of the game, a non-player character called Gary gives the player a scroll.

Give your child a paper copy of this scroll. This can be found in the appendix of this document. You can also find an interactive version here: https://assets.cambridgeenglish.org/webinars/explorers-scroll.pdf. If you can, print the Explorer’s scroll, roll it up and tie it with some ribbon or string. If printing is not possible, you can download the Scroll and have your child refer to it on a different screen, or a tablet.

On the scroll, there are some sentences to complete. Your child writes one letter in each box, or one letter on each line. They also have to tick three boxes.

They write these letters and tick the boxes as they play the game, when they move through the different locations.

The sentences follow the order of the game.

There are three optional sentences to complete. These three sentences are inside the box near the bottom of the Scroll.

Before your child starts playing the game Give your child the scroll. Explain that they have to write one letter in each box, or one letter on each line.

Give your child time to read the scroll.

Game Walkthrough

The game

*The notes here are to help you to understand the game.

We suggest that you try and let your child play the game and complete the scroll without your help.

The Hub area The game starts in the Hub area.

Your child has to open the door walk into the Hub.

They complete the first sentence on their scroll.

Your child meets Gary. Gary gives them their scroll.

They need to find a woman. Her name is Cora. They write this name to complete the second sentence on their scroll.

Walking to Cora’s windmill Your child will follow the path up the hill to Cora’s windmill.

There is an optional activity here. The hint block says it is polite to ring the doorbell.

Meeting Cora Next, your child meets Cora.

Cora asks your child: What else do you need? (The answer to this question is in the name of this game!)

They complete the third sentence on their scroll.

There is an optional activity here. Cora asks them to find a swimming cap.

The dangerous cave Your child then enters a cave. It is a dangerous cave.

Your child has to spell the word ‘dangerous’, using letter blocks. They put the letter blocks in the space on the wall of the cave and complete the sentence.

They complete the fourth sentence on their scroll with this word.

If your child does not get the right answer three times, a secret path will open.

Your child has to spell the word ‘dangerous’ by placing the letter ‘E’.

They complete the fourth sentence on their scroll with this word.

The house Next, your child finds a house.

They complete the fifth sentence on their scroll.

It’s not a very nice house. They have to do three things to make the room nicer. They cannot leave this house until they do these three things.

They have to:

• light the fire to make the room warmer. • clean the walls. (It’s quicker if they take the sword out of the chest.

Then, they can clean the walls with the sword.) • make the floor brighter. There are some parts of the floor where there

is no yellow carpet. They put yellow carpet in these sections.

They tick the three boxes on their scroll when they have done these things.

There are three optional things for your child here too.

They can:

• find the painting of the skeleton. There is an aquarium behind the painting. If they destroy the skeleton painting, they will see the aquarium.

• turn on the lights • put a cake on the table

They can write the letters on the lines for these things on their scroll.

Game Walkthrough (continued)

The beautiful cave After completing the three compulsory tasks, your child will find the next open door.

They now move to a beautiful cave.

There is a second word puzzle here. They have to spell the word ‘beautiful’ using letter blocks.

They complete the sentence about this cave on their scroll.

There is also a secret for your child to discover in this cave.

Back to see Cora Your child now goes back to see Cora again.

With the numbered letters on their scroll, they can complete the password at the bottom of their scroll.

They can now get their helmet.

Back to the Hub area

At the end of the game, your child goes back to the Hub area and sees Gary again.

Practice After the game Practise the words from the game.

Here are some ideas for you to use:

You can ask your child to:

• Say the letters to spell ‘dangerous’ and ‘beautiful’. Say the letters for other words from the game: e.g. helmet, cave, password, lights, sword.

• Write the words dangerous and beautiful on a piece of paper and then write things that they think are dangerous and beautiful.

• Write sentences to compare the dangerous cave and the beautiful cave. • Write sentences to describe where they went and what they did in the game. Tell them to use words like

first, then, when. And up, down, above, below, inside, outside, near.
