Say: Today we are reading a nonfiction, realtext about space and gravity. Hand eachstudent a book. Read the title and author.Say: Turn to the table of contents. Skim andscan the table of contents and think aboutwhat you will learn about space in this book.Provide time for the students to scan thetable of contents. Ask: What do you thinkyou will learn about space in this book?Provide time for a response, then say:Where in the table of contents did you findthis? What seems to be an important topic?(Push for gravity.) Did you infer this or was itstated directly?
Open to the first chapter on page 2. Say:Follow with your eyes as I read it out loud.Think about the main idea. Read thechapter out loud. Ask: What is the mainidea? Provide time for a response. Ask:Where in the text did you find this information?Read it to me. Where did you look to find thisinformation? Highlight in the conversationlooking at phrases and text features.
