Dear Toastmasters of District 46, It is a pleasure to welcome everyone to the Toastmasters International District 46 Spring conference, “Confidence, How to Get It, How to Use It, How to Keep It”. Confidence is what we all need to succeed in life and Toastmasters helps us gain confidence. Each of us is on our own Toastmasters learning journey, taking different paths and learning different competencies that are all transferable in the real world. Confidence is unique because it cannot be taught but is gained in every path! Please use the opportunity at this conference to meet up with old friends, make new friends, network with Toastmasters and share your experiences. I hope this extraordinary conference will renew your commitment to your personal goals to improve your skills and help others in Toastmasters improve theirs. Try out ideas learned from our phenomenal keynote speaker, hone your skills by attending the educational workshops and finally, learn by watching the best of the best compete in the Evaluation and International Speech contests. Remember to share your experiences with your club members who were unable to attend. Enjoy this extraordinary Toastmasters event. I wish you much success! Warm regards,

Radhi Spear, DTM Region 9 International Director, 2017 - 2019

Dear District 46 Leaders and Members,

Greetings on behalf of the over 50,000 Toastmasters members in the 7

US states and 4 Canadian provinces that make up Region 9. As Region Advisor I

attend many events in the districts in my Region, but it’s such

a pleasure to attend a conference in my home district.

Today’s District 46 Spring Conference offers a unique combination of

networking, learning and fun. Through workshops, contests, and business

meetings, you will enjoy activities that are designed to feed your mind and your body. This

conference is the culmination of several months of hard work by the District team. The team

diligently planned the conference by selecting the location, carefully choosing speakers, and

developing the event schedule, to make sure that your experience is memorable. We thank them for

their dedication and foresight in planning a very successful event.

Like thousands of Toastmasters members around the world, you have chosen to invest in your self-

development by attending district conferences. Nothing is more rewarding than being in an

environment with like-minded people. This conference allows you to mix and mingle with others as

you form new relationships while strengthening the existing ones. Breaking out of your comfort zone

allows you to adopt new ways of thinking, and gain empowerment while sharpening your skills. One

of the important conference activities is the recognition and celebration of the individual and

collective achievements of our fellow Toastmasters. By far the most important activity is for you, the

member, to decide on the direction of the District for the upcoming Toastmasters year.

By the way, are you already involved in district leadership or working on district committees? If not,

get involved now, you will see how rewarding such efforts can be. Finally, share what you have

learned and experienced with your club members, let them know what they missed and encourage

them to participate next time.

You will leave the conference with new ideas and approaches that can make you more effective and

efficient in your club, and your career. It will be a long day and no doubt you may be exhausted at the

end, but I guarantee that you will consider the conference time well spent.

Regards,

Elaine Rogers, DTM

Region 9 Advisor, 2018-2019

Dear Toastmasters of District 46, Greetings, It is an honor and indeed a real pleasure to welcome you to the 2019 District conference. You have made a wise decision to come and spend the day with your fellow Toastmasters here at the LaGuardia Marriott. Use this opportunity to expand your horizon by discovering new paths and of course enjoy your Toastmasters journey. Reach out and connect with the other attendees by sharing your experience and enlarge your comfort zone. Please support and encourage all the contestants in the Speech Evaluation and the International Speech contests who have stepped out of their comfort zone to represent their clubs, Areas and Divisions. Let them know that you appreciate their effort and value their contributions. Let them inspire you so that one day, you may be representing the District at the World Championship of Public Speaking. We hope that the accommodations are up to your standards and you find the day to be absolutely fantastic from the time the conference begins until it ends. We aim to please you and that is the reason that we will be asking you to share your thoughts with us. In Toastmasters fashion, tell us what we have done well and what still needs improvement. Once more, welcome to the District conference. We hope that you will continue your Toastmasters journey with more confidence. Have a fantastic District conference. Regards!

Dear Toastmasters and Guests, Welcome to our District 46 Spring Conference, a great event, that will bring together members from across the district. We will learn together in this important leadership event. It is a great learning experience for all Toastmasters. By end of April 2019, District 46 chartered 14 new clubs, received 2,766 membership payments from new members and 8,637 membership payments for renewals. Every new club means the creation of a new community of learners. Every new member means that another friends, colleague or neighbor has been brought into our “Toastmasters family”. Chartering new clubs, welcoming new members, retaining existing members allowed to generate new leaders – there were 46 club sponsors/mentors and 17 club coaches nominated. Those leadership opportunities have allowed members to help new and existing clubs become stronger, provided a positive learning environment and encouraged new members to grow their skills and confidence. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Conference Committee for all the work done to prepare an exceptional conference. Let’s celebrate each other successes, let’s work together to bring out the best in each other and let’s share our experience with members who could not attend. Warmest regards, Patricia Kidwingira, DTM District 46 Club Growth Director, 2018-2019

Good Day, Fellow Toastmasters and Guests! Welcome one and all to this year’s District 46 Toastmasters Conference. Confidence is the theme of our meeting, an invaluable and empowering tool that can help us be the positive change agents we all want to be. In a world full of muddled ideas and ill-conceived actions, what we say and how we say it, with confidence and precision, is vital. This is the Toastmasters credo we proudly subscribed to. This year’s program has relied on the hard work and time put in by this year’s

senior district leaders, program chairs, and coordinators. In the best tradition of Toastmasters, we have all worked as a team supporting each other in completing the innumerable tasks that needed to get done. Thank you very much Tom Marino, Mark LaVergne, Steve Chen, Raisa Serebrenik, Michael Friedlander, and Rosemarie Kluepfel. Kudos belong to Joseph Aubourg, Ananda Basch, Dapo Ibrahim, Lauretta Jaysura, Jerry Luo, Merih Morgan, Brenee Robinson, and Ena Wu. I am grateful to this year’s workshop presenters: Lada Lys’niak, Toni Coleman-Brown, Ruby Baker, Warren Bubb, Jacqueline McIntyre, and last but not least, our keynote speaker, Captain Karen Baetzel, USN, Retired. Of course, without the support of our top district team, none of this would have been possible; Raoul Yacinthe, District Director; Alice Qin, Program Quality Director; and Patricia Kidwingira, District Club Growth Director. And lastly, my thanks to you, our esteemed District 46 Toastmasters; all year long we learn from each other culminating here today for this celebration of all things Toastmasters in New York! Sincerely yours, Elaine Wong, CC, CL District 46 Conference Chair, 2019

Dear Fellow Toastmasters, Along the Road! In the journey of life, there are some roads that are scenic and rich and surprising. Every turn reveals something new and exciting. No matter what you encounter, the effect is a change – perhaps subtle, perhaps sublime, but we are changed nevertheless. The Toastmaster journey is such a road. You cannot help be but changed for your time in this organization – becoming better leaders, better communicators, better brothers and sisters in the family of man. My Toastmaster journey has been a delight and surprise in my life – the reason I joined is not the reason that I stayed. Short term goals have long been supplanted by rewards never expected. Each turn presents a new opportunity to grow and to serve - how lucky for us. There is an old saying that a fish doesn't know it is in water. At Toastmasters, we enjoy the awareness that we are swimming in the creative energy of like-minded people. The best we can do for each other is to be good and trusty companions on this most fascinating voyage we have all chosen to take. See you on the road. Karen Baetzel, DTM District 46 Conference Keynote Speaker, 2019

D46 Evaluation Contest District Chief Judge Sudip Dey, DTM Contest Chair Tom Marino, DTM Contest Chief Judge Raisa Serebrenik, DTM Interview Chair Steve Chen, DTM Briefing: Judges and Contest Officials 2:30pm-3:00pm TBD Briefing: Contestants 2:30pm-3:00pm Ball Room Contestants Ament, Christina Arora, Prashant Cuevas, Nina Goodman, Robert Lewis, Gail Pearl, Jessica Pemberton, Jasmin Scalera, Anthony Evaluation Contest 3:20-4:20pm, Ballroom Green Card: 2 Minutes Yellow Card: 2.5 Minutes Red Card: 3 Minutes

Judging Criteria Analytical Quality refers to the effectiveness of the evaluation. Every evaluation should carefully analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the speaker’s presentation. Were the evaluator’s comments clear and logical? Did the evaluator identify specific strengths and weaknesses of the presentation? Recommendations are an important part of an evaluation. An evaluator not only points out the strengths and weaknesses of a speech, he/she also offers specific recommendations for improvement. Recommendations should be practical, helpful and positive, and they should enable the speaker to improve his or her next presentation. Technique refers to the manner in which the evaluator presents his/her comments and recommendations. An evaluator should be sensitive to the feelings and needs of the speaker, yet inspire and encourage the speaker in his/her future speaking efforts. Summation is how the evaluator concludes the evaluation. The conclusion should briefly summarize the evaluator’s comments and suggestions, and be positive and encouraging.

D46 Toastmasters International Speech Contest District Chief Judge Sudip Dey, DTM Contest Chair Tom Marino, DTM Chief Judge Raisa Serebrenik, DTM Interview Chair Steve Chen, DTM Briefing: Judges and Contest Officials 6:00pm-6:30pm TBD Briefing: Contestants 6:00pm-6:30pm Ballroom Contestants Baker, Bill Gelbinovich, Isaak Harvey, Deirdre Lipschutz, Natsuyo N. Mastrangelo, Joseph Milton, Michael Senan, Anu Williams, Marc TI Speech Contest 6:40-8:00pm, Ballroom Green Card: 5 Minutes Yellow Card: 6 Minutes Red Card: 7 Minutes

Judging Criteria Contents (50%) Speech Development is the way the speaker puts ideas together so the audience can understand them. The speech is structured around a purpose, and this structure must include an opening, body and conclusion. A good speech immediately engages the audience’s attention and then moves forward toward a significant conclusion. This development of the speech structure is supported by relevant examples and illustrations, facts and figures, delivered with such smoothness that they blend into the framework of the speech to present the audience with a unified whole. Effectiveness is measured in part by the audience’s reception of the speech, but a large part is your subjective judgement of how the speech came across. You should ask yourself such questions as “Was I able to determine the speaker’s purpose?” “Did the speech relate directly to that purpose?” “Was the audience’s interest held by the speaker?” “Was this speech subject appropriate for this particular audience?” Speech Value justifies the act of speaking. The speaker has a responsibility to say something meaningful and original to the audience. The listeners should feel the speaker has made a contribution to their thinking. The ideas should be important ones, although this does not preclude a humorous presentation of them. Delivery (30%) Physical presentation of a speech carries part of the responsibility for effective communication. The speaker’s appearance should reinforce the speech, whether profound, sad, humorous or instructional. Body language should support points through gestures, expressions and body positioning. The speaker makes effective use of and stays within the designated speaking area. Voice is the sound that carries the message. It should be flexible, moving from one pitch level to another for emphasis, and should have a variety of rate and volume. A good voice can be clearly heard and the words easily understood. Manner is the indirect revelation of the speaker’s real self as the speech is delivered. The speaker should speak with enthusiasm and assurance, showing interest in the audience and confidence in their reactions. Language (20%) Appropriateness of language refers to the choice of words that relate to the speech purpose and to the particular audience hearing the speech. Language should promote clear understanding of thoughts and should fit the occasion precisely. Correctness of language ensures that attention will be directed toward what the speaker says, not how it is said. Proper use of grammar and correct pronunciation will show that the speaker is the master of the words being used.
