A Message from the Manager

For information on Skokie Park District golf programs, call (847) 674-1500, ext. 3100www.SkokieParks.org

Greetings! According to the National Weather Service, we’ve now had a record 320 days in a row without at least one inch of snow falling. (I’m writing this message in January.) Can we be so lucky two years in a row? This mild weather offers you a great opportunity to work on swing changes, so that when spring arrives your golf swing will be in mid-season form. Drop by Skokie Sports Park on winter weekends and hit away in the comfort of our heated hitting stations.

Additionally, our PGA staff professionals, Chris Pytell and Scott Barla, can assist you all year long by analyzing your swing and making recommendations regarding your short game. This affordable instruction will most certainly improve your scores - and your game. Please read their articles (pages 1 and 6) and call them today to make an appointment.

If you’re a frequent visitor of the Sports Park golf range and, or the Weber Park Golf Course, you can save big by purchasing one of our annual memberships. Buying the golf range membership saves you almost half off our regular rates. Details on both packages are highlighted on page 13.

Finally, we’re getting back to basics with our instructional golf programs. Not only will we be offering specialty clinics, you will also have an opportunity to participate in one of our “Learn the Basics” golf classes. These classes will provide students personalized attention, in addition to group instruction.

My staff and I look forward to seeing you at both Sports Park, now a Top 50 Golf Range and at the Weber Park Golf Course. As always, if you have any new ideas as to what we can do to make your golf experience better at the Skokie Park District, please drop me a line.

Have a great 2013!

Chris Pytell is in his fourteenth year as the PGA Director of Golf Instruction at Skokie Sports Park. Since 1994, he has fueled his passion for teaching by conducting over 15,000 individual and group lessons.

A Chicago native, Chris won a number of junior golf tournaments and at 17, played in a national junior tournament with Tiger Woods. Since graduating from Southern Illinois University on a golf scholarship, Chris continues to play in 10-15 PGA tournaments annually, his best finish is third in a PGA tournament at Flossmoor Country Club. Additionaly, he has competed on the NGA Hooters Tour in Florida. His personal best score was a 58 on a par 66. Chris believes that by maintaining his competitive edge, he will help his students achieve their full potential.

Chris has helped many junior golfers mature into competitive collegiate golfers. He enjoys instructing men, women, and junior golfers of all levels. Because he believes that the learning process accelerates when golf is taught at a simple level, his lessons concentrate on the fundamentals of the game.

“All golfers should take lessons from a PGA Instructor in order to understand the fundamentals and how they are needed to create a more consistent golf swing,” says Chris. “Everyone can improve with a little patience — and by practicing the right principles.”

To schedule a lesson, call Chris at (773) 505-GOLF (4653).

Meet Chris Pytell, Skokie Park District PGA Professional

by Chris Pytell, PGA Director of Golf Instruction, Skokie Sports Park

Most golfers crave more distance, but aren’t exactly sure how to make that happen. While a bigger shoulder turn or uncoiling the hips faster on the down swing might help, what I am about to tell you might come as a shock.

Distance is largely influenced by much smaller parts of the body – your hands. Follow these instructions for energizing your golf swing and additional yards will be coming your way soon.

During the down swing, take note that the back of my left hand is facing forward at about waist high. (See photo 1.)

On the forward swing, again take note of where the back of my right hand is facing at waist high. Once again, it is facing forward. (See photo 2.)

The distance between these two points is what I call the “release zone.” I am attempting to release or roll my hands over one another as fast as I can within this zone. Instinctively, many golfers attempt to control the clubface by locking their wrists. While it might help in hitting the ball straight, locked wrists mean that the hands can’t rotate, which causes a major loss of speed. You must have relaxed hands to roll them over, creating a whip-like effect. On a scale of one to ten, try to keep your grip pressure at about a level three or four, before and during your swing.

Next time you are at Skokie Sports Park take out your nine iron and practice creating speed within your “release zone.” Remember to relax and roll your hands over as fast as you can from waist high on the down swing to waist high on the forward swing.

Good luck practicing and I hope to see you at Sports Park soon!

For a lesson, call Chris at (773) 505-4653 or email him at [email protected]

High-tech learning for a better golf swing

6 | Skokie Park District

by Scott Barla, PGA Professional, Skokie Park District

It seems that the more the average golfer plays, the less consistent his or her swing becomes. Maybe this is why golf scores in America continue to rise. Through the use of new high-tech methods, I can help you achieve a more consistent swing.

Teaching to the visual learning styleEvery student I have ever taught the game of golf has a style of learning that works for them. I am a visual learner. In fact, many people learn things best by watching. Some people are auditory, absorbing lessons by listening to instructors. Others are tactile, acquiring knowledge by actually experiencing something. In order not to waste time improperly communicating, I ask all of my students at the beginning of their first lesson, which style of learning is best suited for them. I then attempt to teach to that style. If you are a visual learner, like me, or even a tactile learner, I may be able to help you develop a consistent swing with the Looxcie live streaming HD camera - a device worn on the ear.

Identifying your swing by body typeI am a firm believer that no one swing method is perfect for all body types. You cannot duplicate a tour pro’s golf swing if you don’t have the same body. Therefore, it is essential that you develop a swing that is comfortable for your body and one that is easy to repeat. During our lessons, we will find a swing that suits you, through the use of 3D video technology, giving you a realistic chance to improve over time.

Meet Scott Barla, Skokie Park District PGA pro

In his sixth season at the Skokie Park District, Scott Barla is a 1994 graduate of the Ferris State University Professional Golf Management Program and a Class “A” PGA Professional since 1996. Scott has taught at Ivanhoe Club, Glen View Club, Shoreacres and the East Bank Club. In 2001 he worked for the PGA of America at the 01’, 02’ PGA Championships and 04’ Ryder Cup. Returning to the area in 2006, Scott became the Manager/PGA Pro at Golf Galaxy-Skokie. He has also been a Golf Instructor for a nationally recognized inner city youth program in Detroit. Scott is a former IPGA Board and Committee Member.

Swing analysis through technologyEvery golf swing has a measurable outcome. Golfers take the club head back to begin their back swing, eventually swinging down and forward, making impact with the ball. In order to measure those two elements of your swing, we will attach a wireless device to your club, and then show you the 3D image of the early part of your swing on a smart phone or tablet. This piece of 21st century technology will allow us to measure every swing, giving you data points. Hopefully, after several swings, you will feel (or see) changes in your swing and be able to measure a more consistent outcome. I will then give you measurable practice goals, allowing you to eventually view your new, repeatable swing with the Looxcie video system prior to your next lesson.

3D puttingThe same technology can be used for putting by attaching a wireless device to your putter’s shaft. You will then see a 3D image of your back stroke and impact point. Through this technology, your putting swing can be measured, allowing us to create a repeatable putting stroke for you.

For a lesson at Skokie Sports Park or at the Weber Park Golf Course, please contact Scott at (248) 635-4183 or e-mail him at [email protected]

The Swingbyte mobile swing analyzer device wirelessly maps your swing.

Scott is wearing the Looxcie streaming HD camera on his ear. His putter is outfitted with the Swingbyte mobile swing analyzer.
