This Volume, thirty first in the series, presentscomprehensive data on deposits and credit ofscheduled commercial banks and the informationon number of employees of these banks, as on31st March 2002. The data are collected throughthe annual statistical surveys, Basic StatisticalReturns (BSR)-1 & 2, from the off ices ofscheduled commercial banks in India includingRegional Rural Banks. The earlier title of thepublication, i.e. Banking Statistics has beenchanged to Basic Statist ical Returns ofScheduled Commercial Banks in India fromVolume 29 issue relating to March 2000. This hasbeen done with a view to highlight the source andthe nature of the data published in the Volumeand also to indicate the basic distinction betweenthe banking statistics presented in anotherpublication of the Bank, viz., Statistical TablesRelating to Banks in India, which is based ondata collected through various statutory returnsand other statistical returns. Information on otherpublications of the Bank on Banking Statistics isgiven in the Appendix.

    2. The BSR-1 & 2 returns have been revisedwith effect from March 2002 Survey in line withpolicy changes, developments in the bankingsector and also with a view to have uniformcoding system for occupation/activityclassification as per the National IndustrialClassification (NIC), 1998. The significantfeatures of the revision are:

    (i) A new BSR coding system in respect ofactivity/occupation classification of borrowalaccounts based on NIC 1998 classificationhas been incorporated in BSR system.

(ii) The loans extended through credit cardsare included in Demand Loans.

(iii) Inland Bills include both, trade bills &other bills.

return is divided into two parts - Part A andPart B (termed as BSR-1A and BSR-1B). Till1998, the BSR-1A return covered accountswith individual credit limit of over Rs. 25,000.Consequent upon the revision in the cut-offcredit limit from March 1999 survey, BSR-1Areturn for scheduled commercial banks otherthan Regional Rural Banks, covered accountswith individual credit limit of over Rs. 2 lakh.In the case of Regional Rural Banks, the cutoff limit then was Rs. 25,000. The revision ofcut off limit for classifying accounts in BSR-1Ahas been made as Rs. 2 lakh for RegionalRural Banks also from March 2002 survey. InBSR-1A, information in respect of each of theborrowal accounts is collected on variouscharacteristics, such as place (district andpopulation group) of utilisation of credit, typeof account, type of organisation, occupationalcategory, nature of borrowal account, rate ofinterest, credit limit and amount outstanding. InBSR-1B, information in respect of accountswith individual credit limit upto Rs. 2 lakh isobtained in consolidated form for broadoccupational categories. In addition, BSR-2provides information on staff strength, classifiedaccording to gender and category (i .e.supervisory, clerical and subordinates), inindividual bank offices as on the reference dateof the survey. Deposits exclude inter-bank

deposits. Current deposits comprise (i) depositssubject to withdrawal on demand (other thansavings deposits) or on notice of less than 15days, or term deposits with a maturity period ofless than 15 days (or less than 7 days for amountof Rs. 15 lakh and above); (ii) call depositswithdrawable not later than 14 days; ( i i i)unclaimed deposits; (iv) overdue fixed deposits;(v) credit balance in cash credit and overdraftaccounts and (vi) contingency unadjustedaccount if in the nature of deposits. In BSR-2, bankbranches also give classification of term depositsaccording to broad interest rate ranges as wellas size of deposits. Based on these data, tablesgiving percentage distribution of term depositsaccording to interest rate range and size ofdeposits are presented in the Volume.

    5. Deposits and credit patterns presented inthis Volume include the impact of the merger ofICICI Limited with ICICI Bank Limited. As such, the geographical/other distribution of deposits &credit may show large variation as compared tothat of previous years in few tables.6. Out of the 67,897 offices of scheduledcommercial banks functioning as on the last dayof March 2002, BSR-1 returns were received from61,958 offices. BSR-2 returns were received from

  • iii

61,565 offices. In the case of non-reporting officesthe data have been estimated based on theprevious round of the survey and from theavailable information in the Quarterly Returns onAggregate Deposits and Gross Bank Credit(BSR-7) as of 31st March 2002.

    Outline of the Volume

    7. This Volume is divided into five Sectionsdisseminating the data on deposits and creditof scheduled commercial banks with referenceto various classificatory characteristics. Section1 presents general information on commercialbanking and also the summary data ondeposits and credit at the All-India level andstate level. A new table, giving percentagedistribution of term deposits of scheduledcommercial banks according to the size ofdeposits, has been presented. Accordingly, earlier Table Nos. 1.28 & 1.29 of previousvolumes have been renumbered as 1.29 and1.30. Section 2 gives State-wise / District-wise distribution of deposits and outstandingcredit classified according to population groupsand bank groups. Data on distr ibution ofdeposits by type of deposits are presented inSection 3. Classification of outstanding creditaccording to different characteristics such assize of credit limit, rate of interest, type oforganisation, type of account, bank group, state and population group, etc., are given inSection 4. In Section 5, these data are furtherclassif ied according to occupation of theborrower. District and occupation-wisedistribution of outstanding credit is also givenin Section 5.

    8. BSR-1A return provides the identificationof the district and population group of the placewhere the credit is utilised. However, in BSR-1Breturn, such information is not being collected; itis presumed that in respect of these accounts, the credit is utilised in the same place where ithas been sanctioned. State and population

group-wise data on credit given in Sections 4 and5 are based on place of utilisation of credit, whereas in Section 2, these are based on placeof sanction of credit. In Section 1, data on creditwhen presented with deposits (Tables 1.3, 1.4and 1.5) are as per place of sanction and whenpresented separately (Tables 1.10 and 1.11) theyare based on place of utilisation. Tables 1.6 to1.8 present the data on credit according to boththe place of sanction and the place of utilisationso as to facilitate comparison.
