Enabling lives and livelihood…
Bosch India Foundation: An Introduction
When 92% of shares of a Fortune 500 company is held by a non-profit
foundation, what does it speak of the values of the company? Perhaps that is
why Bosch is on the Fortune list of most admired companies. While the Robert
Bosch Stiftung or Foundation manages the world wide Bosch philanthropic
activities, the Bosch India Foundation is the torch-bearer of the social activities
of Bosch in India.
The Bosch India Foundation was established as a Trust in March, 2008 by 4 Bosch subsidiaries in India – Bosch Limited (RBIN), Bosch Chassis Systems India Ltd. (RBIC), Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions
(RBEI)and Bosch Rexroth India Ltd. (DCIN). Every year these companies contribute a portion of their net profit to the Foundation.
The foundation is based on the vision of our founder Robert Bosch -"It is my intention, apart from the alleviation of all kinds of hardship, to promote the
moral, physical and intellectual development of the people" (Robert Bosch, 1935). Robert Bosch cited examples of how his philanthropic vision should be realized: "Health, education, training, support for gifted children, international reconciliation and the like…" In the spirit of the founder’s vision, the Bosch India Foundation aims at ‘Enabling lives and livelihood through technology and education’.
The people behind the foundation: The foundation’s functioning is guided by a board of trustees and carried out by a small team.

"It is my intention, apart from the alleviation of all kinds of hardship, to promote the moral, physical and intellectual development of the people." (Robert Bosch, 1935)

Our Mission
In order to enable people to lead life with dignity, it is important for them to become productive members of our society. This is what will create sustainable development in the long run. Hence our vision includes the quality of life and the importance of livelihood in sustaining life.
Our Vision
Enabling Lives and Livelihood through Education and Technology
Our Mission
How we intend to achieve the mission: Like a spark that ignites an engine, the foundation aims to empower individuals to create an impact that will help
communities stand on their own feet, through employability training and techno-solutions.
Technology refers to the application of a systematic method in order to achieve a desirable outcome.
Bosch India Foundation
Enabling lives and livelihood…
Strategic Goals and Objectives
1. Provide Employability Training and Techno-Solutions through Partners: Vocational training aims at connecting individuals and societies to the economic engines, while technological solutions aim at robust affordable
solutions that work in the community context; eg: telemedicine or Solar Power for remote villages. The foundation works through partners who may provide resources to enable this work. Eg: by funding providers of marketable vocational trainings and entrepreneurs who create machines that could provide improvement in the quality of life for disadvantaged communities.
2. Help communities stand on their own feet: The long term objective of the
foundation's work is to make disadvantaged communities self-sustaining. The foundation does this by mobilizing, consolidating and redeploying resources. Hence projects are evaluated for their long term impact.
3. Empower individuals to create an impact: The foundation aims to identify and work with individuals to create an impact in society. The foundation will develop a model of empowering individuals to be change agents.

Our Programs
The foundation aims to contribute to enriching and improving the lives of those
in need. We can contribute the most when we do what we know best. Our two areas of competence are vocational training and technology. We, therefore, focus on using these as tools to enable lives and livelihood, to create sustainable improvement.
1. Enabling Lives…
a. Health Projects:
Congenital diseases and early childhood accidents not only robs young children of their childhood, they also cast their shadows into adulthood, too. We now know that, in many cases, early intervention can completely transform the child’s life, it is not always possible for everyone. Sometimes its due to lack of resources (financial resources, availability of health services, etc.), and
sometimes its plain lack of awareness regarding diagnosis and treatment. We support projects which are aimed at correcting physiological abnormalities of children whose parents cannot afford it. The foundation also supports other health care projects such as health care awareness for women and children, rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injury and other beneficial health care projects.

b. SparshVachana: Helping children walk with their head held high: In the last two years since this project started in 2009, the foundation has supported the surgery for 45 young children with complex orthopedic problems such as club foot, cerebral palsy, congenital dislocation of hips, brittle bone disease, radio-ulnar fusion and other gross orthopaedic deformities.
c. GCCRI and Maaya Project:
The foundation is a strong support for the Gujarat Cleft and Craniofacial Research Institute and Maaya Foundation which conducts free corrective
surgeries for those born with facial deformity like cleft lip, cleft palate, haemangioma, neurofibroma and other craniofacial syndromes. Annually over 500 children benefit through these surgeries.
2. Enabling Livelihood…
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.’ – Chinese proverb”
While there are over 5000 ITIs and ITCs providing vocational training in many
trades to India’s youth, eligibility to apply to these courses requires passing the 10th (or 8th in some case). This excludes the 50% of Indian youth who drop out from school before the 8th. The major chunk of those who drop out do so to supplement the family income through any unskilled job that they can get.
The skill trainings we offer, along with our partners, are aimed at these youth.
The trainings therefore are:
free of cost of short duration (2-6 months) with emphasis on hands-on learning
for those who are financially underprivileged based in localities where the urban or rural poor reside suited for part time working people also relevant in the market with high employability potential

3. Holistic Village Development
Recent United Nations documents emphasize “human development,” measured by life expectancy, adult literacy, access to all three levels of education, as well as people’s average income which is a necessary condition of their freedom of
choice. In a broader sense the notion of human development incorporates all aspects of individuals’ well-being, from their health status to their economic and political freedom. According to the Human Development Report 1996, published by the United Nations Development Program, “human development is the end—economic growth a means” (p.1).
According to the classical definition, given by the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987, development is sustainable if it “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
Defination: "Holistic Village Development is a process designed to create
conditions of economic and social and Human progress for the whole
community of the village with its active participation and fullest possible
reliance upon the community's initiative."

Planning:
1. Situation Analysis:
This, which would have been started during the first stage itself, is a two-fold process – Both being undertaken at the same time
i. A baseline survey, which has two purposes; firstly, to identify details of the existing scenario in different areas of development so that improvements could be suitably bench-marked to this. Secondly, to provide basic data on the deficiencies and gaps in infrastructure, amenities and services as well as the potential for future economic and human development. In the alternative, an academic institution or a group of trained experts could be assigned the task. Additional locally relevant items may be added.
ii. Participatory Situation Analysis: This should be got done through the local community involving trained facilitators. The key participatory techniques which could be used are: * Social Map: It is a map, drawn by the local persons, particularly women, depicting households according to different categories, important institutions, physical and social infrastructure and other amenities.
* Resource mapping: This helps understand the natural and physical resources at the command of the village. This is also prepared by the local people and the map would show the following: ◊ Land use ◊ Water bodies ◊ Irrigation structures ◊ Physical layout of the land –showing slopes, undulations, drainage patterns etc.
The Resource Map would delineate the micro-watersheds and help identify the potential for agricultural development and natural resources management. * Needs matrix: This is prepared with the involvement of a cross-section of the local households to rationally assess the collective needs of the
village and their priorities. The data collected through the situation analysis should be captured on a GIS platform.
