MARKER OF HOREB CHURCH DEDICATED

Approximately 100 persons attended dedicatory services of a marker at the site of Old Horeb Presbyterian Church on Sunday, June 10. The marker was erected by Union Memorial Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Robert E. Smith, pastor of Sion Presbyterian Church, Winnsboro, gave the invocation, the Rev. Cecil D. Brearley, Jr. of Columbia, read the Scripture lesson. The Rev. Arthur M. Martin of Columbia, Executive Secretary of the Synod of South Carolina, read a history of Horeb Church, and Elder George R. Park, Clerk of the Session of Union Memorial, dedicated the marker. The prayer of dedication was given by the Rev. Samuel Hudson Hay, D.D. L.L.D., of Columbia, and the Rev. Joe D. Beale, pastor of Aimwell Church, Ridgeway, pronounced the benediction.

The History of Horeb Church as read by the Rev. Mr. Martin, follows:

Horeb Presbyterian Church according to a Mrs. Camak, who being 77 years old and oldest member of the church in 1850, when she told it to Dr. Howe for his History of the Presbyterian Church in South Carolina was organized in 1791 or 1792, when Rev. Thomas Harris McCaule began to preach there. A log church was built, evidently near the old cemetery where the road through Mossy Dale crosses Crooked Run, "a tributary of Cedar Creek, and an affluent of Broad river."

It was first known on the rolls of Presbytery as Crooked Run Church. On February 8, 1800, the church requested First Presbytery to record its name as Horeb; and later that same year, on September 30, they call William G. Roseborough, who accepted and on February 4, 1801, was ordained and installed pastor of Horeb and Concord congregations when Presbytery met in Horeb Church.

Mr. Roseborough served Horeb six years, but his name lingered on. In Mills' Atlas and Map of the State, the church, located on the north- south road by the present site, was called Roseborough's Church. It is about ten miles due southwest of Winnsboro.

The longest pastorate of Horeb Church began in 1826 when Rev. William Brearley, just out of Princeton Seminary, came to be pastor at Winnsboro and Horeb, preaching at Horeb monthly until 1840, when he moved to Darlington. After irregular supplies, Rev. Samuel Hutson Hay, fresh from Columbia Seminary which had been founded in 1828, became pa.stor for two years. Rev. George Christian Logan served as pastor two years until his death, June 10, 1848. His tomb is the most distin- guished evidence on the site today, along with the foundation of the former frame building.

Page 5: Contentsfairfieldgenealogysociety.org/Members_Only/Newsletters...Vol-6-Nr-1.… · Columbia, SC 29212-9671 Vice-President Henrietta Rosson Morton P. 0. Box 1203 Greenwood, SC 29648-1203

Dr. Daniel Baker held a gread revival at Horeb Church in 1832, on one of his tours. He also raised a good sum for his Austin College in Texas. Horeb Church was also active in the origin and support of the Richland-Fairfiled Bible Society, and is still carried on the rolls of that society.

The first three elders, according to Mrs. Camak, were James Brown, a Mr. Boyd, and another she had forgotten. Other elders of Horeb were (1845) James McDill, Nathaniel Marvin, Jacob Bookman, William Gilbert, and Charles B. Douglas. Others were John Elliott, John Hamilton, and John Brown (in the 1820 Is. )

History of the church after the Confederate War is very meager.

The last record of Horeb Church in the statistics of the General Assembly is in 1879, when the church reported 60 members, 3 elders and 3 deacons. When Union Church was organized in July 1889, its member- ship, which in three years grew from 22 to 69, was made up largely of former members of Horeb Church, including Elder J. B. Murray who became a charter member and on the first two elders of Union.

In a very real sense, the life and history of old Horeb Church has been perpetuated in the organization, life, and history of Union Presbyterian Church. In 1939, Elder Leighton Hawes, who grew up in Horeb Church, left his generous bequest to Union Church, thus making possible the erection of the present beautiful granite church know known by the terms of his will as Union Memorial Church. It is a memorial to Elder and Mrs. Leighton W. Hawes and behind them, a memorial to Old Horeb Church.

The marker dedicated June 10, 1962, to make the site of old Horeb Church, is thus fittingly dedicated by the Congregation and Session of Union Memorial Church.

Rev. Arthur M. Martin June 10, 1962

POWELL, ROGERS, WATTS, WOOD, BLAKENEY, CANSLER/KANSLER, HENDERSON, CARTER, YOUNG, WILMOTH, GOLDEN, DECK. I would like to ask if anyone might help in regard to the information on the POWELL family in the Fairfield County History Book, compiled by Faye Johnson. there does seem to be a possibility our Powell family and this could belong together and would like to contact others interested in these families and/or who gave the information on the families. Mrs. Peggy Cansler, 5151 S. Greenway Dr., Tuscon, AZ 85706

WILLIAM ELLISON: born August 1, 1781, died September 3, 1838. Attorney at Law of the District of Edgefield. He signed a Marriage Settlement with ANN CATHERINE THOMSON of the city of Charleston, SC, May 8, 1813. He died intestate. His body is buried in the Longtown Baptist Churchyard, Longtown, Fairfield Countu, SC, along with Ann Catherine. The church itself no longer exists. I am interested in finding the family (siblings and forebears.) James T. Wilks Jr, 4618 Kilbourne Rd., Columbia SC 29206-4537.

For years I have been searching for a large genealogical chart originally prepared by Mr. Joe Free of Union County, SC, probalby in the 1920'a. This chart was used extensively by Mrs. Mamie Lee Edwards Mabry in the family sketches on- FOSTERS and some other families for-the UNION COUNTY HERITAGE BOOK which was published several years ago. The chart has now disappeared and neither Mrs. ~ a b > ~ not I have been able to trace it: It did obtain a copy of one section of the chart from Mr. Robert B. Long of Asheville, NC. I would greatly appreciate any help. William B. Hankins Jr, 101 Holdsworth Rd., Williamsburg VA 23185.

JAMES HENDRIX/HENDRICKS. Do you have any information on file on the SC families of HENDRIX/HENDRICKS and GARDINER? I am particularly interested in JAMES HENDRIX who married HARRIET HARDINER ABOUT 1835. I Do not yet know which county they came from, jut that they came to Florida from SC between 1848 and

- 1855. Thanks. Richard Dana Hamly, 7655 Hooes Rd., Springield VA 22152.

WAS YOUR ANCESTOR A SEAMAN?

An Act of Congress in 1796 made provisions for the Seaman Protection Certificates which were issued to seamen, upon proof of citizenship, as an attempt to protect than from impressment by other countries. The certificates give birthplace, age and physical description of the applicant. The applications were filed in Washington, D.C. and indexed by the WPA in the 1930's. The act was repealed in 1940. If you think your ancestor may have been a seaman in the period of time from 1796 to 19Q0, you can requsst a copy of this record from the Judicial, Fiscal, and Social Branch, Civil Archives Division, National Archives, Washington, D.C. 20408.

We all know what it feels like to find just a little bit of information on a family we are researching. It does not matter if i t is only a middle initial or a whole book about our ancestor. There is great joy in a find!

Recently we received a note from one of our associate members, Mrs. Ann Gwinn of Eastover, SC. She writes, "I found my great-great grandmother in Volume I of Fairfield County Cemeteries published by your chapter. Many thanks." (Signed) Ann Gwinn. 1
