Mental Health First Aid Basic Certificate (MHFA – Canada)Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved. Participants learn how to provide help, promote the recovery of good mental health and provide comfort to a person experiencing a mental health problem.

MHFA Basic is a 12 hour course that discusses the following mental disorders: Substance use disorders; Mood disorders; Anxiety disorders; and Psychotic disorders. Crisis first aid skills for the following situations are learned: substance overdose, suicidal behavior, panic attack, acute stress reaction, and psychotic episode.

Who Should take an MHFA Canada Course? Everyone! Why?Mental health problems are common. There is a stigma associated with mental health problems. Many people are not well informed. Professional help is not always on hand. People may lack the insight to realize they need help or that help is available. Members of the general public often do not know how to respond.

Participants receive a certificate of participation from the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

There will be 5 online multiple choice exam-inations at the completion of each section. They consist of: the four main Transport Canada Knowledge requirement sections – Navigation, Law, Meteorology and General Knowledge with a required pass mark of 60% and the fifth exam is the standard Industry Canada examination for the Restricted Opera-tor Certificate with Aeronautical qualification with a required pass mark of 75%.

Although Transport Canada (TC) has yet to release the regulations and standards for the

issuance of a Pilot Permit for small UAV opera-tion, a comprehensive list of required knowledge has been published. Participants who have com-pleted ground school training on these required knowledge topics by an approved operator, and who meet the other outlined requirements, are recognized by Transport Canada as pilots of UAV systems. The benefits of this recognition are valuable to companies as TC recognized pilots can avoid fines by knowing and understanding regulations, receive expedited or blanket Special Flight Operation Certificates, and promote their business as a quality trained professional.

All of the contract training programs can be completely customized to meet your training needs.

Contact us today about bringing one of these programs to your community OR creating a customized program.

Forest Operations ProgramPrepare your clients to participate in the forest industry.

Entrance RequirementCompleted Grade 10 English and Math

This program can be delivered over 3 months and will accommodate up to 16 students. This program will prepare students for a wide variety of entry-level positions in forest operations or to participate in a logging training program. Covering topics such as woodland navigation using GPS and compass, woodland stewardship, woodland wildlife & biodiversity, and safety training, the program also provides students with time on simulators, to assist them with determining their aptitude for various logging equipment.

“I like the fact we get to work out in the field outdoors, learning hands on” – Dexter Lafferty, Forest Operations Program, Fort Smith, NWT

Technical Preparation ProgramPrepare your clients to pursue trades-related training opportunities.

Entrance RequirementCompleted Grade 9

This program can be delivered over 4 months and will accommodate up to 16 students. Students will receive lab experience in a variety of trades and academic preparation for the basic, Level 2 AIT Entrance Exam (those who enter with a higher-level of academic preparation may be ready to write higher level AIT Entrance Exams). Students successful in this program may wish to pursue a Pre-Employment program in a specific trade, or other technical training such as Power Engineering or Oilfield Operator. Pre-Technical Training includes:

• effective study skills

• the academic skills required to succeed on the Level 2 + Alberta Apprentice and Industry Training (AIT) Trades Entrance Exam

• safe work practices

• the basic knowledge and skills required to work as a labourer or apprentice in one or more of the following trades:

- Carpentry - Electrical (Industrial) - Millwright

- Welding - Pipefitter

• understanding of the apprenticeship system in Alberta and how to become an indentured apprentice

• knowledge and skills required of a model employee

• researching and applying for employment.

All of these programs can be completely customized to meet your training needs. They can be shortened or lengthened, reducing or adding components (i.e. safety tickets), at the client’s discretion.

“Trades entrance programs are valuable in northern communities for three main reasons. First, the hands on aspects help students identify which trades suit them best, and working on actual projects is amazing for students’ confidence. Secondly, the academic components prepare students for entrance into apprenticeship programs and career opportunities. The teaching is directly related to work. Thirdly, trades entrance programs can be tailored to meet the needs and demands of the community. They bridge the gaps between people who want work and available jobs in the area.” – Rena Auger, Project Coordinator, ATOSKE Action Group

Making Your Meetings More Effective for Non-Profit OrganizationsAre your meetings dragging out for hours and at the end of the meeting you wonder if your group really achieved anything? Does your Chairperson do a better job telling everyone about his weekend’s activities than he does taking the organization through an efficient meeting that gets things done?

If either of these scenarios speak to you, then your organization could use a “meeting tune-up”. In this session, the facilitator will take you through some effective techniques to cut down meeting time, make your actual meeting more effective, and show you ways to have your attendees coming to their meetings prepared to make decisions. We will touch on Robert’s Rules of Order, agendas and a number of other meeting tools that can help.

This session is presented by Community Development officer, Angelo Murphy with Alberta Culture in partnership with Northern Lakes College. The Community Development Unit offers customized facilitation services to build the capacity of non-profits, municipalities, volunteer teams and community groups.

As an employer, employees are your greatest asset. “Our organization has had the opportunity to work with Northern Lakes College to deliver the Essential Skills for

Supervisors Training Program. We have found Northern Lakes College to be very responsive when scheduling

our programming including providing effective instructors and a suitable learning environment. It has been very

beneficial to have an organization that takes care of all the details and allows our employees to show up and learn.

The course content has been helpful in assisting our employees in becoming stronger leaders. I would recommend
