By eliminating those prior tactics of judging or controlling our patients, we are now embracing a more effective “patient-centered approach to coaching. Our patients will only make positive changes if they can appreciate the value as well as making those choices on their own time. Lil will walk the audience through the key principles that underscore the process of using motivational interviewing techniques in our workplace. The video clips and interactive discussion brings about a productive environment for learning this concept while having fun during the seminar. Course Objectives: Discussing and applying the 4 guiding principles of Motivational Interviewing practice Discuss the stages of MI practice using the concepts of D.A.R.N. Reinforce the implementation of “open-ended” question in gaining insights into patient’s behaviors Define ambivalence and discuss how to guide patients through their challenges in adopting new behavior patterns Observe the video demonstrations of dental hygiene and patient interactions – and provide suggestions/input in improving the tactics in motivational interviewing Speaker: Lil Caperila, RDH, BSDH, M.Ed. Lil Caperila is a registered dental hygienist who has provided direct patient care for over 35 years. She is currently employed with Premier Dental Products Company as Manager of Professional Education and an internationally –recognized speaker on topics of clinical instrumentation, prevention and patient education. Lil is a past President of Pennsylvania Dental Hygienists’ Association and former dental hygiene faculty within three universities in the Philadelphia area. In 2009, Lil was honored to be inducted as the first dental hygiene graduate into the Alumni Hall of Fame at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA and later selected to their “Fabulous 50” Alumni during the college’s 50th anniversary. Course #2: “Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office" – Using Audience Response Polling 3.0 CEUs

Course Description: This lecture will review the prevention, recognition and the management of medical emergencies which can and do occur in the dental office. This presentation will be interactive, including audience response polling to enhance the learning experience. Attendees will have access to a hand-out in advance so that more time will be spent listening, thinking and interacting.

Course #3: “Differential Diagnosis of Oral Lesions – An Interactive presentation using Audience Response Polling” 6.0 CEUs

Course Description: Development of a working differential diagnosis is one of the most difficult tasks in the diagnostic sequence. This program is designed to increase skills of hygienists to successfully understand the differential diagnosis used in dentistry to either treat or to confidently refer. This program is an excellent learning format for comprehension of diagnosis and plan treatment decisions for patients.Objectives/Benefits from Attending:

• A practical and useful review of the diagnostic terminology and sequence necessary to formulate a differential diagnosis.• Appreciate practical methodology to help refine clinical diagnoses.• Formulate differential diagnosis on soft tissue and radiographic lesions.• Multiple clinical cases will be presented to enhance understanding and retention of material.

Speaker: John L. Alonge, M.S., D.D.S.Dr. John M.S., Alonge D.D.S.is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, andthe National Dental Board of Anesthesiology currently in private practice in Erie, Pennsylvania. Dr. Alonge is a Magna cum Laude graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received his dental degree as well a master’s degree in anatomy in 1983, along with numerous awards and honors; among them, election to Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and Omicron Kappa Upsilon national dental honor society. He was selected for the U.S. Air Force General Practice Residency Program at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona which he completed in 1984. He was then transferred to Hickam AFB, Hawaii where for three years he served as Chief of Outpatient Oral Surgery prior to entering formal Oral and Maxillofacial Residency Training at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Upon completion of his surgery training in 1990, Dr. Alonge was then assigned to Wright-Patterson USAF Medical

Center in Dayton, Ohio where he served as Oral Surgery Training Officer for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency Program. He separated from the Air Force in 1994 to enter private practice. As a result of his years of teaching, Dr. Alonge has extensive experience in all subspecialty areas such as dento-alveolar surgery, dental implants, corrective jaw and facial surgery. Dr. Alonge has lectured regionally, nationally and internationally and is a member of the Examination Committee for the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He serves as a clinical instructor for the LECOM School of Dental Medicine Erie Outreach Clinic.
