F R O M T H E S U P E R I N T E N D E N T . . .

Twice each year, once in the spring and again in the fall, the Garden City Public Schools announce courses and leisure time activities presented through our Continuing Education Program. A number of residents serve on the Advisory Council to this program and, through their efforts, a wide variety of opportunities are selected for inclusion. I hope you will take the time to look through this brochure. I am sure that you will find something of interest that will enhance your understanding, your competencies, or broaden your scope of leisure and recreational activities. I also encourage you to provide us with feedback about your experiences with the Continuing Education Program; we are always interested in your comments. Please accept my best wishes for the upcoming Continuing Education term. Sincerely, Robert Feirsen, Ed.D. Superintendent of Schools

Barry Rivadue From D.W.Griffith to the latest Spiderman movie, Long Island has played an extensive part in American movie history for the past century. 400. THE WRECKS OF THE BRISTOL AND THE MEXICO ON THE BEACHES OF LONG ISLAND - 1837 Arthur Mattson In the winter of 1836-7, violent storms drove two American sailing ships onto sandbars just a few hundred yards off Long Island’s South Shore---at Rockaway Beach and at Long Beach. The twin disasters caused the deaths of 215 passengers and crew, 100 by drowning on the Bristol and 115 by freezing to death on the deck of Mexico. Historian Art Mattson was drawn to this story when he came upon a mass grave in the village of Lynbrook. What he discovered was that these 175-year-old tragedies had a more profound impact on maritime history and the arts---including the poetry of Walt Whitman---than any other American shipwrecks, before or since. It has allowed many sufferers to regain control of their lives and resume the activities that anxiety took away from them. By altering your instinctive response to anxiety or panic, my special technique can change inappropriate anxiety from a controlling factor in your life to a minor nuisance. I even teach it to young doctors at a major New York hospital to help them understand anxiety and cope with their workloads. This lecture series is given over three consecutive weeks.
