Continuing Professional Development - Defined

• CPD – education, training, and learning activities that assist one in growing beyond current levels within your chosen profession (teaching English)

• Education – a program or process of acquiring knowledge (formal studies?)

• Training – an event or program of learning specific skills/abilities

• Development – a process or approach for realizing potential

CPD = Professionalism

• Professions require CPD: Dentists, Surgeons, Accountants, etc.

• Moving from Novice to “Senior” (advisor to novices) through your career

• Keeping up with new developments

Art or Science or…

• Teaching can be perceived as:– Art – “some people are born teachers”, still the

re are skills to be acquired and things to learn– Science – “there are systems,” a theory or prin

ciple should underlie your work– Craft – (Helgesen) “we have to respect the inh

erent qualities of the materials we work with, and bring out their strengths”
