What is a Continuing Professional Development (cpd) Point and how does it differ to edu Points?

EDU: Education points are given to assessable award courses or those of an equivalent standard – these count for your accredited CPLI application.

CPD: Continuing Professional Development points are given to shortcourses and ongoing education that you may do. Reinsurer and other shortcourses count towards your cpd points but not to edu points

A minimum of 40 CPD points in the calendar year.

CPD is a continuous activity to ensure a member’s skills and knowledge are kept up-to-date to the changing regulatory, legislative and community expectations landscape.

All CPLI members must watch and pass an annual ALUCA mandatory Regulatory & Ethics Webinar worth 5cpd points - held in September 2020.

• The CPD log is for use by you but you can use your own.

Your annual journey to 40 cpd points

Map out your annual training journey & record your points from Jan 1. Identify your knowledge gaps and set your goals.

You will be required to do an annual ALUCA mandatory regulatory webinar.

There are 5 key activity areas that have minimum cpd requirements for you to achieve & log.

1. Business, Technical & Specialist Competencies: min. 15 hours

2. Customer Care: min. 5 hours

3. Regulatory, Compliance & Consumer Protection: min. 5 hours

4. Professionalism & Ethics: min. 5 hours

5. General – no minimum, but 10 hours required if other categories are at minimum

TECHNICAL and SPECIALISTAn activity designed to help build business, technical and specialist competencies. It links withthe Business, Technical & Specialist Competencies in ALUCA’s Competency Framework.

EXAMPLES (15 hrs min)Technical and Specialist workshops, courses, seminars, internal/employer training, conference, writing and publishing a technical paper or delivering a technical workshop, participating in a technical special interest group, professional reading.*Note that professional reading has a maximum of 10 hours in total across all 5 CPD categories.

An activity designed to enhance the member’s understanding of applicable regulatory andlegal obligations and how to comply with them to ensure consumer protection. Legal andregulatory issues are specifically dealt with in the ALUCA Specialist Competencies inSections 7c), 7d), 8c, 9c) and 10c).

EXAMPLES (5 hrs min)In house/employer mandatory compliance training/privacy/life code/courses andworkshops, seminars, external training, conference, writing and publishing a regulatorycompliance paper or delivering a seminar.

An activity to enhance the member’s capacity to act as an ethical professional. These arereferred to in various parts of the ALUCA Competency Framework.
