Here’s four steps that weencourage all clients to take every time theyaddress an organisational challenge by hiringcontract expertise.

Pre-contract PreparationWhile contractors are paid a premium theyoften when structured appropriately, are lessexpensive than permanent employees.Nonetheless any headcount is costly and it’simportant to plan from the beginning how youcan maximise the value returned from thisinvestment. Consider aligned projects that theycan contribute to, and focus on recruiting aspecific skill bias that would support longerterm organisational challenges.

Clear MilestonesWorking with the contractor at the outset of theprogramme to set clear milestones by whichtheir progress can be assessed. CommunicationMake sure you communicate clearly to allstakeholders, that the contractor is startingtheir work and what you expect to achieve as aconsequence of this investment. Explain theresources that will be allocated, including theteam where relevant and if at all possible, thedecision level or limit of the contractor. Everyagile professional needs co-operation fromcurrent employees and generally faster than anew permanent hire will. So, breaking downbarriers that can be created by assumption andabsence of communication is essential.
