Tired of spending thousands of dollars for parts that break down on your CAT/ASV Multi-Terrain Loader? Are you missing rubber drive lugs on the track or have plastic/rubber idler and bogie wheels that wear out quickly? Bair Products, Inc. has solved your problems with their line of aftermarket heavy-duty undercarriage components that will outlast the life of your current OEM parts with reduced repair costs, minimal down time, and the ability to fix problems in the field within minutes.

REBUILDABLE AXLE HOUSINGS.Introduced January 2011, for CAT 267/277/287 and ASV 100. These axle hous-ings come already filled with grease and a shield-ed grease zerk for easy access. They will not con-dense water which means no more corrosion on the bearings. Idler Axles will have a dual bearing upgrade to increase its durability over common OEM axle failures. Seals are purgeable allowing the, end user to know when the housing is full.

Axles are sold individually for use with OEM wheels and/or Bair's upgraded solid alloy Idler wheels or can be bought as a complete set with only Bair's alloy wheels for complete durability and strength.

TRACK TENSIONERS. Tired of adjusting that old jack screw with wrenches and torches? Save

time and money with Bair Product’s grease-gun operated hydraulic track tensioner. It's ready to install in minutes with no modifications. After installation, tension is adjusted by using a grease gun that keeps the cylinder tight.

ELECTRIC THROTTLE GROUP. Tired of your cables and foot throttle sticking on your machine? Convert your machine into an electric throttle controlling the R.P.M. with a toggle switch. No

more stuck cables and could work as a nice anti-theft device. Installs easily and quickly.

FRONT/REAR IDLER & BOGIE WHEELS. These heavy duty aluminum alloy wheels have been made to withstand the daily use of your multi-terrain loader. The wheels will wear evenly over time where rubber/plastic wheels wear out on the inner/outer sides, taking the look of a bicycle tire and wearing a groove into the track. Bair Product’s alloy wheels will not have “chunks or will be split” like the rubber OEM wheels. Some wheels come with grease fittings into the wheel to help keep bearings lubricated at all times, saving the operator down time.

AFTER MARKET RUBBER TRACKS. Why pay high, marked up prices for rubber tracks from the dealers? Save money buying the same quality track that is also Kevlar reinforced for durability for less money than the expensive equipment dealers.

“LARRY LUGS” PATENTED BOLT-ON REPLACEMENT DRIVE LUGS.Don’t throw away your track due to missing drive lugs. Larry Lugs are heavy-duty lugs that bolt onto the track in place of rubber lugs that have broken, worn, or delaminated off the track, extending the life of the track. These revolutionary lugs will outlive the track itself. Ten minutes to install in the field or shop without removing the track. Simply grind off the old lug, place a template onto the track, and drill directly into the template and track to match up your bolt holes. Using an air impact, tighten the bolts into the lug. Larry Lugs can replace all the original lugs on a track. When the life of the track is finished, remove the Larry Lugs and reinstall on different tracks. Pat #7,625,050.

Anderson Machinery, a LiuGong Construction Machinery dealer, faced a major set of hurdles to meet the request of one of its most valuable customers. The customer, Formosa Plastics Corp.’s CFB power plant in Port Comfort, TX, needed an excavator with a special reach arm two feet longer – and excavator bucket four inches wider – than anything Anderson had available.

Brett Morgan, Territory Sales Manager for Anderson’s Victoria branch, found himself in a challenging situation. He could have easily told the customer that Anderson did not have an excavator in its product line that could meet their needs, but instead rolled up his sleeves and fi gured out a way that Anderson could deliver the excavator and bucket required.

Formosa CFB makes polyethylene, polypropylene and other materials – that create tons of ash as a byproduct. The company partners with Louisiana-based LA Ash to process this ash into slurry for use as a ground stabilizer in the construction of roads. LA Ash offi cials said due to the size of Formosa’s slurry trench, that they would need an excavator with an 11½-foot stick and 54-inch wide bucket. The trench measured 20 feet wide, 20 feet deep and 100 feet long. The excavator purchased would need to access the material from various points on the perimeter of the trench.

The closest excavator Anderson offered was a 58,400 lb, 190hp LiuGong CLG925LC – with a standard 9-foot, 10-inch stick and 50-inch, 1.55-cubic yard bucket. At that point, Morgan went to work to fi nd a solution that would satisfy the decision-makers at both Formosa CFB and LA Ash.

Morgan worked closely with LiuGong representatives and a Portland, OR manufacturer to get a custom-built stick manufactured. He then tracked down a company in Chattanooga, TN to supply the larger bucket.

Morgan consulted with Stan Parry, General Manager of Anderson Machinery’s Victoria branch, and LiuGong’s George Lumpkins, Director of Aftermarket Operations. Parry said about the search, “The thing is, you can’t just add two feet to a stick or four inches to a bucket. It changes the geometry and the leverage of the machine, so they have to

be custom designed and manufactured.”

Lumpkins helped Anderson fi nd Jewell Manufacturing, the Portland OR-based manufacturer who custom-built the longer stick. He also assisted Morgan in working with Tag Manufacturing of Chattanooga, TN to get the custom sized bucket manufactured. Morgan’s tenacity – and Lumpkins’ years of industry

ThingWorx powers the cloud-based Smart Structures SmartPile™ system for remote monitoring of bridges, buildings, and other infrastructure.ThingWorx™, the provider of the first software application platform for the connected world, has announced a strategic partnership with Smart Structures Inc., a global leader in wireless solutions for smart infrastructure monitoring. The partnership will deliver solutions to improve the quality of bridge pilings, foundations, and other concrete structures, while reducing construction costs and improving safety.

This partnership addresses a growing need in the US – cost effectively building out a smarter physical infrastructure. Despite billions of dollars in federal, state, and local funds directed toward the maintenance of existing bridges, 69,223 bridges—11.5 percent of total highway bridges in the U.S.—are classified as "structurally deficient," requiring significant maintenance, rehabilitation, or replacement, according to a 2010 report from the Federal Highway Administration. In the years since the report was issued, America’s infrastructure challenges appear to be accelerating. However, new technologies, including wireless, Internet-connected sensors could improve the state of infrastructure, introduce more efficient means of monitoring assets, extend the service life of these assets, and enhance public safety.

“The number of wireless sensors and other Internet-connected devices deployed across the country to improve infrastructure management is growing rapidly, but what’s been missing is an effective platform for managing and analyzing condition reporting data,” says Russ Fadel, Co-founder and CEO at

ThingWorx. “Our connected application platform serves as a complement to Smart Structures’ field-proven technology and solutions, and it will enhance the value that construction companies, bridge designers, municipalities, and governments derive from remote infrastructure monitoring.”

Smart Structures’ SmartPile® Embedded Data Collector (EDC) technology uses software to process data from wireless embedded sensors embedded within concrete piles used in foundations. The system is used during construction to ensure the quality and integrity of the structure. When properly planned in, these sensors can also provide post-construction long term load and event monitoring. The ThingWorx platform will provide the critical software and AlwaysOn communications infrastructure for the SmartPile system, allowing Smart Structures to securely connect its remote workstations to a centralized, cloud-based information database and Internet portal where sensor data is stored.

“Smart Structures’ technology and solutions have already demonstrated the benefits of smart infrastructure in the field, and we look forward to building more value into our solutions by adding the power of ThingWorx,” says Tom Chiarella, CEO at Smart Structures, Inc. "We chose ThingWorx because we were able to extend our current on-line system dramatically faster than with previous generation tools. These new technologies are changing the way we interact with our physical world, and by allowing objects and machines to send us data about their performance, our customers will be better prepared to react and respond to deficiencies in strength and integrity while minimizing costs and risk."

The partnership with ThingWorx extends Smart Structures’ core capabilities beyond sensor data collection, providing them

with a modern, Web 2.0-based platform, including innovative collaboration and intelligence tools that will allow Smart Structures to rapidly build Internet dashboards that allow authorized users to download, analyze, review, and generate reports on sensor data that is captured during bridge construction and through ongoing monitoring.

As the system evolves, the Smart Structures solution has the ability to detect long-term changes that can indicate corrosion, erosion, and other leading indicators of structural deficiencies. This will enable state and federal governments to subscribe to the Smart Structures online data and application services to obtain data from the embedded sensors for health monitoring, maintenance and repair management, homeland defense, emergency response, and other critical needs. The system can also provide real-time alerts on pending structural deficiencies to enable a new level of situational awareness for local, state, and federal public safety and security agencies.

ThingWorx™ is a privately held company that provides the first software application platform designed for today's connected world. The ThingWorx platform combines the key functionality of Web 2.0, Search, and Social Collaboration, and applies it to the world of "Things", including connected products, machines, and industrial equipment. Businesses use the ThingWorx Platform to rapidly deliver innovative applications and connected solutions in markets such as manufacturing, utilities, and energy, as well as in emerging "Internet of Things" applications, including smart cities, smart grid, agriculture, transportation, and Machine-to-Machine (M2M). For more information, please visit our website at www.thingworx.com and our blog at www.thingworx.com/blog or follow us on Twitter@ThingWorx.

Smart Structures' advanced sensing and monitoring technology enables clients to optimize the design, construction and operation of the nation’s infrastructure including bridges, ports, and industrial processing facilities. Our first product, the SmartPile® system, improves the quality of concrete foundations while reducing the overall cost of the substructure and improving construction efficiency and safety. This is accomplished through the company’s field-proven SmartPile® Embedded Data Collector (EDC) technology, which has revolutionized the structural monitoring industry by combining wireless embedded sensors within concrete piles with software that processes the sensor data during driving, thus providing complete real-time quality and condition reporting throughout the entire lifecycle starting with validating the quality of the concrete mix, fabrication of concrete components, the construction of the overall structure, and its operating life.

Smart Structures selects ThingWorx for smart infrastructure monitoring

McCann Industries recently outfitted a Takeuchi mini excavator with rail wheels, so it can be used on the Chicago Transit Authority's rail lines. The machine will move along the rails, digging, filling, and positioning heavy electrical components during a project to upgrade the tracks. The project is estimated to last one year.

“The machine took a lot of engineering and welding,” says Richard Hoffmeyer, product support manager at McCann Industries. “The contractor had a tight deadline to meet and was looking for a responsive and reliable partner to complete the conversion.

"We were able to source the rail gear and attach it to the excavator, and we did it quickly and economically. They've been very happy with the machine. Our technical people are talented and experienced. I think the result of their diverse

backgrounds, professional training, and collaborative effort was pure genius. A challenge like this is just another day at the office for these guys.”

The McCann team mounted two hydraulically operated push blade assemblies located on the front and back of a standard Takeuchi TB145 excavator. The blades were replaced with rail wheels and axles. When the gear is lowered, the machine moves along the tracks using its own power.

When the gear is raised, the machine can move onto the tracks and into position. The machine can also pull a cart of equipment behind it as it moves along the tracks.

About McCann Industries McCann Industries Inc. has been selling contractor supplies since 1967. The company added heavy equipment to their offerings in 1994 and now has seven locations throughout the Chicago area to service the construction industry. For more information, visit their website at www.McCannOnline.com.

Lura Enterprises’ Trolley System efficiently handles specialized concrete pours Lura Enterprises introduces the Trolley System, a new accessory designed for its award-winning Lightning Strike Concrete Roller Screed. The Trolley System offers a revolutionary design that reduces costs while increasing efficiency on specialized projects. The accessory completes bridge decks with crowns and cambered pours quickly and with minimal setup time.

Designed to handle challenging pours, the Trolley System adapts to easily accommodate multiple projects, unlike expensive, single-use alternatives that are designed for only one application. This versatility and adaptability allows contractors to bid and economically tackle a variety of specialized projects. In addition to bridge decks, the Trolley System takes on applications other machines cannot handle including radius pours, parapet walls, and those with obstruction such as rebar. It features three adjustment points — one at each end and a third at the center CV joint — as it extends to cover pours as wide as 38 feet. If needed, additional articulation points can be added.

The Trolley System runs across pipes as large as 2.5 inches in diameter to easily maneuver across the jobsite. The frame body is constructed of strong, durable quarter-inch steel, and supported by eight concave rollers capable of carrying as much as a metric ton each. The significant weight-bearing capability of the rollers allows the Trolley System to carry the screed, generator, lights or other supplementary equipment a contractor may need on the job site.

Unlike competitive products, the Trolley System becomes operational with minimal setup time and effort. It can take several days to set up other screed systems, while Lura’s Trolley System is in place within about four hours and with the efforts of only two people. Upon completion of the job, the Trolley System requires no maintenance. It’s simply loaded onto a standard trailer and transported to the next site.

For the ultimate in customization, the Lightning Strike Trolley System can be ordered powder-coated in a color to match any company’s brand.

Lura’s Trolley System was designed for use with the Lightning Strike, the most versatile, efficient screed system on the market. The Lightning Strike easily adapts to pervious concrete and sloped, wide and circular pours.

For more information call 701-281-8989 or visit the website at www.luraconcretescreed.com.

»business STRATEGIESEight Tips for Maintaining Working Capital

–By Federico Acuna, Vice President, American Express OPEN

Is your business ready for its next big

opportunity? If you answered “yes” based

on your experience, know-how, or sheer

enthusiasm, don’t forget the one thing

that can trump them all: cash. Often, the

cash to hire, buy necessary equipment,

and cover other startup expenses can

make all the difference between a great

opportunity and a missed opportunity.

So that you can be ready for the next big

break that comes your way, help create

sufficient working capital with these tips

for taking control of your business’s cash

flow.

Know where you stand. When it comes to cash flow, knowledge is

power. Cash flow crunches don’t appear

out of nowhere and they can often be

spotted—and avoided—by knowing

exactly where you stand with a cash

flow statement. Income statements show

sales, expenses, and profits at a given

moment, but cash flow statements show

the movement of money in and out of your

business over a specific period of time.

This will help you see whether you’re

building or draining working capital.

Actively manage outflows. You’re in control of accounts payable, so

don’t let spending run on autopilot. When

cash is tight, delay payments as much as

possible, but without paying late. Using

charge cards to cover purchases is one

option, but you can also consider bartering

for goods or services, or using points and

miles from credit card rewards programs.

At times when you have sufficient cash

on hand, take advantage of vendors’

payment terms that reward you for early

payment with a 1 to 2 percent discount.

Small discounts such as these can add

up, and that’s money you can reinvest in

your business. If early-payment discounts

aren’t available to you, another possibility

is to rely on credit or charge cards that

offer them, such as the Plum Card from

American Express OPEN.

Streamline monthly expenses.Short of billing more, the most obvious

way to balance receivables with payables

is to simply cut down on expenses. Target

recurring costs because even a small

reduction can add up to significant savings

over the course of a year. Find creative

ways, for example, to handle peaks in

demand without hiring additional staff,

by relying on outsourcing or temporary

help. You might also consider renting or

leasing infrequently used equipment or

vehicles on a short-term basis instead of

buying them, to avoid monthly payments

or large one-time expenses. Also consider

reassessing monthly services, such as the

company’s cell phone plan, to cut back on

unneeded services and costs.

Create a plan B.Even the most diligent cash managers

need to find cash for unplanned expenses

or for important investments, such as

new machinery or tools. In these cases,

it’s important to have several sources

of financing lined up for when you need

it. Planning financing ahead of time

will allow you to find the best options,

and you’re also more likely to receive

financing before you’re cash-strapped.

When conducting research, don’t

overlook special lending programs you

may qualify for, such as those designated

for small businesses owned by women or

minorities.

Stay on top of receivables.Business owners often feel they have no

control over receivables, yet there are

steps you can take to speed payments.

First, state clear payment terms and stick

to them. You may also want to encourage

some customers with early-pay discounts

of your own. Be aware, however, that

some customers may feel in their right to

take the discount without paying early, so

be selective. Another tactic is to simply

ask for a partial payment upfront—or

for a larger initial payment—when it’s an

option.

Offer a variety of payment options. If you’re not willing to take the risk of

offering an early-payment discount,

another possibility is to encourage the use

of charge and credit cards. Unlike checks,

you won’t run the risk of a customer’s

overdrawn account, or have to wait for a

check to arrive in the mail.

Revamp collections.Stay on top of collections well before

payments are overdue. Look for ways to

improve your overall collections process

by understanding your customers’ billing

preferences and procedures. Begin

by making certain that all customer

information is up to date. By maintaining

current telephone numbers and address

information, you’ll speed collections

work and reach customers promptly.

Also be certain your invoice contains all

appropriate information, such as your

customer’s purchase order number or

your vendor number, and make sure

to send the invoice to the appropriate

contact. Wrong contact information or

missing information will only add more

time to the collection cycle.

Outsource receivables.Bad credit can be contagious, so it’s

important to prevent bad customers from

affecting your good credit. Protect yourself

from late-payers or non-payers by putting

a reputable intermediary in the middle.

Hire or assign a reliable bookkeeper or

accountant on a contract basis to handle

accounts receivable functions. His or

her job will be to approve credit, make

collection calls, receive payments and

make deposits. By taking this active step

towards strong accounts receivable, you’ll

take a major step towards stronger cash

flow.

Considering the extensive scheduling

and planning required to keep any

construction job on time and on budget,

your business probably doesn’t lack for

discipline. So put that discipline to work

and make a commitment to stick to these

cash flow tips. Over time, good practices

will eventually become the routine, and

you’ll soon find yourself in the position to

say “yes” to whatever great opportunity

comes your way.

Federico Acuna, Vice President, American Express

OPEN, oversees the Plum Card, a charge card

that helps small business owners better manage

cash flow and free up working capital by taking

advantage of the card’s built-in trader terms.

Building up the Government: Tips For Finding Steady Growth in the Federal Marketplace

By Doña Storey, American Express OPEN Advisor on Procurement

Government contracting has long been a positive revenue opportunity for small businesses eager to grow, and building and construction is among the federal

government’s top spending categories. To help industry business owners understand what they need to do to get a leg up on the billions of dollars’ worth of

government contracts that are set aside for small businesses, Doña Story offers some helpful information below about the opportunities building and construction

fi rms have selling to the federal government and tips on how they can get started.

After a few successful years, it is no surprise that a small business begins looking into new markets as a part of their growth plan. Small construction fi rms are no different. With the right guidance and a strong network, a construction fi rm can fi nd steady growth in the federal marketplace. You may start off as a small company working on a specifi c trade, such as being an electrical contractor, but with determination and strong project management skills, your construction business can join the ranks of many that have found government contracting as a path to growth and greater success. Or you may be a local construction fi rm who fi nds that creating a strategic alliance with a very large prime contractor already doing business with the government will offer

guidance but also a steady stream of work. Regardless, there are a few key steps that you can do to jumpstart your preparation in growing your company in the government marketplace.

Get registeredRegister your company in the Central Contractor Registration (CCR). This is a database that enables you to be found by government customers looking for a small company. As an aside, it certainly helps to know you can’t be paid unless you are found in the CCR. (Website is at www.bpn.gov/ccr/)

Build a capability statementDevelop your fi rm’s profi le into something that is called a capability statement, a very

clear, concise description of your fi rm. A brief listing of your past contracts or projects, also known as past performance, is something that the federal government fi nds very valuable and should be included in your capability statement. If the work you have performed has been as a subcontractor, describe it as such. Make sure you have the ability to cite who your satisfi ed customers are.

A capability statement ultimately helps boost your ability to be seen as a viable small business that has experience and a track record. According to Jack Beecher, Chief, Small Business Programs Offi ce, Norfolk District, Army Corps of Engineers, strong past performance on contracts and having that information readily available for review is critical in the agency’s decision-making process.

Explore SmallBusiness Certifi cationsCertifi cations can make a big difference in your success and help set your business apart from the competition. Visit sba.gov and search certifi cations to see whether

you qualify for any of the small business certifi cations – which include woman-owned, HUBZone, veteran-owned, service disabled veteran and small disadvantaged (usually certifi ed as an 8(a) company). This would allow your company to compete with other companies that are within your size category thereby narrowing the competition and increasing your likelihood of being awarded a government contract.

Many small business owners believe that winning government contracts is too intimidating, or somehow beyond their reach. By tackling the process with a straightforward approach, you will fi nd that the skills you have developed to grow your business in the commercial sector —commitment, hard work and strategic networking — are just as valid in the government sector. Companies should put their strengths to work and take advantage of the sector that can weather any economic downturn.

Check out government contracting opportunities online at www.fbo.gov to fi gure out what kinds of contracts would be a good fi t for your business’ capabilities.

The United States government is the largest consumer of products and services in the world, spending more than $535 billion in fi scal year 2011 in procurement—23 percent of these dollars are set aside for small businesses. As a result, federal contracting is an important avenue of growth for many building and construction fi rms to consider.

Following the winter’s last hurrah, long after the snow diminishes from the forecast and the snowdrifts melt away, the last thing most people want to think about is more white stuff. Snow and ice contractors, however, are not “most people.” These professionals eat, breathe and live snow, and as a result, aren’t necessarily happy to see winter come to an end. But, most do look forward to giving their pushers a well-deserved break come spring. Before parking the winter workhorse, a post-season maintenance program should be performed.

Although pushers are designed to be as close to maintenance-free as possible, common wear-and-tear items are bound to need attention at some point – depending on the level of usage and application for which the pusher is utilized. A snow pusher is a major investment. Simple maintenance is the easiest, most inexpensive way to protect that investment and ensure years of reliable use. But perhaps more significantly, post-season maintenance is the key to being productive and poised for action when the first flakes fly. Proactively addressing maintenance immediately after the season ends, ensures valuable training and safety discussions won’t get pushed aside in order to prepare the equipment in the fall.

Though the maintenance is essential, it’s also minimal. The checklist requires a few simple steps and a small amount of time.

Cleaning It UpUniversally recognized as the end to the snow season, April 15th is the target date for initiating the post-maintenance program. The first, and perhaps simplest, step in a solid post-season maintenance plan is giving the pusher a good cleaning. A thorough power wash removes salt and debris, preventing corrosion and rusting. After cleaning, allow the pusher to dry for a few hours, and then apply a standard penetrant to pivot points, fasteners, nuts and bolts. Each pusher features a unique design and likewise requires specific attention to key components. In pushers that feature moving and forgiving parts as part of the design, extra lubricant should be applied to those areas such as springs, joints and edges to prevent paint chipping and rusting.

Once the pusher is cleaned, a detailed inspection can alert the operator of any issues. Again, because each type of pusher is built differently, the full inspection should be tailored to suit the equipment. While

there is no “one-size-fits-all” maintenance plan, there are basics for most standard pushers.

Inspect, Repair and Replace Proper and timely maintenance is essential in order to optimize performance and avoid accelerated wear. In general terms, pushers are designed to be fairly easy to care for and service. In the event a repair or full replacement is needed, most steps are relatively quick and easy to perform. In fact, most servicing can be completed in less than 30 minutes.

Every pusher has a cutting edge, either rubber or steel, that should be inspected and replaced if necessary. Rubber edges tend to have a life only 1/5 that of steel, thus requiring more frequent maintenance and replacement. Regardless of the edge type though, replacement does come at a cost. The size of the edge and the time required for replacement can cause costs to add up in a hurry. Some plows that feature sectional moldboard designs minimize time and expense by allowing individual sections to be replaced as needed.

These sectional designs typically feature 32-inch independent moldboard sections, each mounted on the pusher’s mainframe with a mounting block. Those blocks should receive a quick post-season inspection and replacement if they show

cracks or damage. A critical element to the safety of the plow, the property and the operator, the mounting blocks are designed to handle a lot of pressure and impact with little damage and may last in excess of five years. However, if signs of stress or damage occur, it is important to replace damaged blocks to ensure safe and proper operation. Also, check to be sure bolts are tight and the blocks are firmly secured to the pusher.

All pushers have wear shoes that should be inspected at the season’s end, and replaced if severely worn. Wear can occur quickly and unevenly with standard hitch designs requiring precise placement by the operator. Understandably, when it’s 3:00 a.m. and there is a lot to be cleared, time is of the essence and operators may not take time for the necessary adjustments. New to the market, “drop-and-go” hitch designs remove operator error by self-adjusting to the pavement and ensuring even wear on both shoes for longer life and fewer replacements. These designs also permit the shoes to “float” rather than drag during operation, further extending life. Regardless of the type of hitch design, a quick check is in order to make sure the wear shoes are in proper working order.

Having successfully checked and completed the major components, there are still several smaller parts that impact the overall performance of the pusher. Constant movement of the center and outer springs can lead to breaks or stress points. Carefully inspect those areas. If

Out Of The Snow, Not Out Of MindProper maintenance is key to optimum performance next season

Sectional moldboard models alleviate both the time and expense of replacement. Rather than replacing a large, single cutting edge on a one-piece moldboard several feet wide, just the damaged section needs to be replaced.

All pushers have wear shoes that should be inspected at the season’s end, and replaced if severely worn. Newer “drop-and-go” hitch designs permit the shoes to “float” rather than drag during operation as well as ensure even wear on both shoes for longer life.

Curb Shaper takes out all the labor of being bent over shaping curb by hand and gives you a perfect shape every time. This tool has several adjustments and can be set up for different jobs in a matter of minutes.

Curb Shaper is basically designed for 24" curb and gutter, but has adjustments up to 2 1/2" either direction that can be adjusted while in use to take care of variations in form work. By removing the all thread adjustment pin, you can turn the sliding under carriage around and put the wheels on the other side of the bracket which allows you to go to a 18" curb and gutter with the same 2 1/2" adjustment capability.

any part of the spring or pin is broken or appears to be rusted to the point of weakness, a replacement spring should be installed. Finally, check to be sure all cotter pins, nuts and bolts are intact and tighten any that may be loose.

To perform a thorough inspection, be sure to read the owner’s manual for specific maintenance on specific makes and models of pushers. In addition, this post-season inspection is a great opportunity to take inventory and order any parts that may be needed for the next season. Just as taking care of maintenance and repairs at that time will ensure the pusher is ready to go next season, being proactive

with inventory management will ensure unforeseen issues that arise next season won’t develop frozen profits.

Simple StorageMost people lack shop or garage space large enough to store pushers during the off-season, but it’s perfectly fine to keep them outside during these months. One key thing to consider is the effects of mother nature. Protect against rust and moisture damage by spraying penetrating oil onto rust-prone areas.

Be ProactiveKeep in mind that one solid evaluation at the end of a season doesn’t equate to an adequate preventative maintenance program. Snow pushers require – and deserve – TLC throughout the season. Besides protecting the investment and increasing the longevity of the pusher, preventative maintenance throughout the year is among the best ways to reduce off-season work.

Most manuals outline maintenance intervals based on mileage, fuel consumption, service hours or calendar time. But just as snow is completely unpredictable, maintenance intervals need to be flexible to accommodate each unique event and season. For example, standard guidelines may specify replacement intervals for parts as monthly. However, if it has been an unusually brutal month with day after day of consecutive use, this interval may shorten considerably. The best rule of thumb is always to use common sense when scheduling inspections, and simply replace when the part appears worn.

While simple maintenance will go a long way in extending the life of a pusher, proper operation also has a significant impact. Never shake the pusher or hit it on the pavement to remove snow. Though this may be the natural reaction, that violent jarring can result in added stress on joint and components – especially in frigid weather.

It’s also crucial to remember a pusher should never be treated as a bulldozer when stacking snow. Proper stacking requires that the pusher be lifted as the machine engages the snow pile. Plows are designed to stack snow endlessly but must be used properly.

Lastly, proper positioning is pivotal to the pusher’s longevity, so avoid too much forward or down pressure. Mentioned earlier, certain manufacturers offer special “drop-and-go” hitch designs to aid in positioning. They’re designed to take the guesswork out by automatically adjusting to the pavement grade.

Post-season maintenance is the best way to extend the life of a snow pusher and guarantee years of reliable performance. Owners should find it encouraging to know that yearly maintenance, depending on usage, can cost operators as little as $5 for a can of penetrant. Best of all, taking care of maintenance and repairs now will ensure the pusher is ready at the first sight of white next year. The flurries can come at any time, so be ready to push through Old Man Winter’s first arrival.

Mounting blocks handle a lot of pressure and abuse, protecting both the operator and carrier equipment. With proper operation and care on the part of the operator, mounting blocks can last five years or more, but will occasionally need to be replaced.

Every pusher has a cutting edge, either rubber or steel, that should be inspected and replaced if necessary. Rubber edges tend to wear about five times faster than steel.

experience – paid off for both Anderson Machinery and its customers.

Fred Ridenour, General Manager of Business Operations for LiuGong, said the extra effort was about delivering what was needed. “Some manufacturers might just say no, and move on to an easier sale,” said Ridenour. “Or the dealer might be left to try and figure it out themselves to satisfy their customer. LiuGong worked hard to help Anderson gain the sale. We view our dealers as valuable partners and place a strong emphasis on going above and beyond when it comes to customer service. This was certainly demonstrated throughout the sale. Sometimes you have to be creative in the excavator business. ”

For Anderson Machinery, LiuGong’s extra effort paid off in another way as well.

“Not only did we get the correct length stick and larger bucket built and fit onto the LiuGong CLG925LC excavator, meeting the customer’s need, but we also gained an additional sale out of the effort. Formosa was so pleased with the excavator and the personal attention they received that they also purchased a 4.58 cubic yard LiuGong 856III, 220 hp wheel loader from us. Needless to say, it was a good deal all around for our dealership, LiuGong, LA Ash and Formosa CFB.”

Since 1957, Anderson Machinery has been a family-owned and operated construction equipment dealership serving Central and South Texas, with facilities in Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Pharr, Austin and Victoria, TX. For information about Anderson Machinery, please call Brett Morgan at 361-575-8111.

Founded in 1978, Formosa Plastics Corporation, U.S.A. is a vertically integrated supplier of plastic resins and petrochemicals. For additional information please call 361-987-7000 or visit www.fpcusa.com.

LA Ash, Inc., is a large marketer of coke-fired CFB calcined limestone products. For further information, call 337-625-4260 or visit www.laash.net.

LiuGong Construction Machinery has been producing high quality construction equipment for more than 50 years and is growing globally. LiuGong produces over 50,000 wheel loaders a year, making the company the largest manufacturer of wheel loaders in the world. Barking dogs and ambulance sirens can interfere with a good night’s sleep, but so can a number of physical conditions. Because sleep is essential to your health, get familiar with these common disorders and conditions that prevent restful shuteye:

teeth grinding.Technically known as “bruxism,” grinding your teeth can cause pain in the jaw, as well as annoy whomever you’re sleeping with. It’s often associated with anxiety and stress. A mouth guard can reduce tooth abrasion, so talk to your dentist.

sleep paralysis. While drifting off to sleep, or waking up, you may suddenly realize you’re unable to move your body. The condition can go on for several minutes. It happens when part of your brain is in REM sleep and it shuts down your ability to move so you don’t injure yourself during dreams. It’s not dangerous—just unnerving.

Obstructed sleep apnea. An obstruction in the upper airway can cut off oxygen for 20-40 seconds as you sleep, preventing you from getting the rest you need. And you may not even be aware of the problem

unless a partner notices your breathing diffi culty. Treatment depends on the seriousness of the condition; surgery is one option, but lifestyle changes such as losing weight and avoiding alcohol can also be effective.

night terrors. Not a nightmare, but an intense sensation of fear that’s most common in children. Though scary for parents and kids alike, night terrors aren’t considered dangerous and usually don’t result in any lost sleep.

Restless leg syndrome. An irresistible compulsion to move parts of your body as you’re trying to fall asleep, RLS is a neurological disorder that can affects your arms, torso, and even phantom limbs. Stretching or shaking your limbs can bring some relief; iron supplements may be effective, but have your iron level tested by your doctor before taking any pills.

Keep your eyes open for thesecommon sleep disorders

Xtreme Wheels™ for Rubber-Tracked TractorsSuperior Tire & Rubber Corp.’s Xtreme Wheels™ Retreading Program offers a complete undercarriage retreading service for your rubber-tracked tractors. The Xtreme Wheels™ Retreading Program works by sending in existing worn out mid-roller, friction drive and idler cores to be retreaded with a proprietary polyurethane compound – significantly reducing the cost of purchasing new wheels and extending wheel work-life.

Xtreme Wheels™ Retreading provides greater resistance to debris buildup, better cut and tear resistance, and heat tolerance – allowing retreaded wheels to last up to 4 times longer than most OEM replacement rubber wheels. In general, typical rubber wheels in pan-scrapping and high-speed applications fail due to poor heat resistance. The heat that builds up degrades the rubber’s chemical composition and also breaks down the glue used to secure the rubber material onto the core. Unlike rubber, polyurethane starts as a liquid, allowing Superior Tire & Rubber Corp. to use a unique chemical bonding technology that allows for maximum resistance to compound breakdown and de-bonding. This advanced bonding technology allows Superior Tire & Rubber Corp. to offer the industry’s only No Bond Failure Guarantee on every new and remolded undercarriage wheel they produce.

Superior Tire & Rubber Corp. also offers New Xtreme Wheels™ mid-rollers and Idlers as OE drop-in replacements. If you need wheels for your Case Quadtrac, John Deere T/RT series, or CAT/Agco Challenger machine or if you’re looking to save money by retreading old worn wheel cores, call Superior Tire & Rubber Corp. at 800-289-1456 or visit www.strXtremeWheels.com.

PumpBiz is proud to offer Bi-Fuel systems for vehiclesPumpBiz, Inc., an international distributor of industrial/consumer pumps and generators is pleased to extend their Propane (LPG) Bi-fuel upgrades to trucks, cars, busses and delivery

vehicles. Jeff Richmond, President of PumpBiz said that while they have been offering and installing Bi-fuel conversions to their lineup of small engines – lawn mowers, generators, water pump and construction equipment – for several years now, adding the upgrades for gasoline and diesel vehicles is a sign of the times and demand.

“We have heard from a lot of our customers pleased with the advantages of propane systems on their 4-cycle engines that they wanted to obtain the same advantages in the operations vehicles. Propane is 50% less expensive, clean burning, better for the engine, never goes bad, and the safety.”

“There are over 20 million vehicles worldwide operating on propane. While there are a lot in the USA, they are using invasive or complicated systems. The XSI system we use is quite simple and has been used in Europe for decades. System is completely automatic switching between fuels,” says Richmond.

In order to be more direct with marketing this timely fuel upgrade, PumpBiz has launched a second website – www.runpropane.com. It speaks to the subject better than the award winning website www.pumpbiz.com for pumps and generators.

For more information contact PumpBiz, Inc., at 800-PumpBiz (786-7249), email: [email protected] or visit either website: www.pumpbiz.com, or www.runpropane.com.

Some say that when you do what you love, you won’t work a day in your life. Brett Kallias of Accelerated Greenworks, says there’s definitely truth behind that expression. Kallias discovered his passion at the age of 15, and since deciding to follow it, his work hasn’t been work at all.

A native of Minot, ND, Kallias began his own lawn care business while in high school and continued operating the business in the summers during college. After earning a degree in Construction Engineering from North Dakota State University in Fargo, Kallias decided to sell his business and accept a job with the North Dakota Department of Transportation – where he worked for four years. In those four years, he couldn’t ignore the growing feeling that something was missing. The passion he had when he was working in landscaping just wasn’t there. In 2006, he listened to his heart and opened his landscaping business in West Fargo. Accelerated Greenworks has been steadily growing ever since, and Kallias couldn’t be happier.

“When I first started the business, I was running solo except for a couple of guys that I hired to help in the summer,” Kallias said. “I now have a full-time office manager, a full-time summer crew of 20 employees and a year-round part time crew of 40 people.”

A full-service landscaping, yard restoration and snow removal business, Accelerated Greenworks operates throughout the state of North Dakota, as well as the northwestern half of Minnesota. In 2011, one North Dakota job in particular hit close to home – and Kallias couldn’t turn it down.

Minot was struck by severe flooding during June 2011. The flood, which was the worst recorded in Minot history, caused significant damage to more than 4,000 homes and businesses – not to mention the emotional toll it took on city residents. As often seen during times of devastation, Minot’s residents leaned on one another for strength, support and the ability to rebuild what was lost. People from across the state reached out their hands to help in any way they could. That list included Kallias and his crew.

“Minot is and will forever be my hometown,” Kallias said. “So, there was no question in my mind that I would help in any way that I could. I initially brought a few of my guys with me, and we cleaned out basements that were damaged by the flood.”

While in Minot, Kallias caused quite the stir. Many residents knew about Kallias’s landscaping business and approached him for help with yard reconstruction efforts. It was enough work, in fact, to keep Accelerated Greenworks busy for three months. At first, Kallias thought nothing of taking on the additional work. After all, Accelerated Greenworks is no stranger to flood reconstruction projects. The Minot flood, however, brought new challenges the team hadn’t faced in the past.

Floods in North Dakota typically happen during the early spring months when the grass is dormant. The Minot flooding was unusual in the fact that it occurred when the growing season was in full swing – suffocating grass, sod, bushes and hedges. Accelerated Greenworks would have to completely redo each yard, removing all of the dead greenery before the soil could be reconditioned and yards revived.

In addition to suffocated foliage needing to be removed, yards also were full of flood debris. This included up to 6 inches of silt, as well as debris from decks, sheds and other items that had been tossed around during the disaster. All of this coupled with Minot’s uneven terrain, resulted in the realization that it wouldn’t be a typical reconstruction project – nor an easy task. The job was estimated to take at least 24 hours of work time for each yard reconstructed.

Kallias, however, was up for the challenge – and so was his crew of 16. Kallias even had a secret weapon up his sleeve that would cut the time spent on each yard in half.

“In 2010, we were approached by Grouser Products to test a new land plane that was in prototype stages,” Kallias said. “Always looking for ways to improve efficiencies, we gladly accepted the testing opportunity.”

Based in West Fargo, ND, Grouser Products provides a full line of heavy-duty dozer and belly blades, as well as an extensive series of over-the-tire tracks and track parts. Through more than 30 years in business, Grouser has produced and manufactured industrial-grade products designed to increase productivity and versatility. The prototype it presented to Accelerated Greenworks was no exception.

Known as the V3 FlexPlane, the prototype is unlike any other land plane in that it incorporates a self-

adjusting blade that pivots to easily maneuver over uneven landscapes. Easily attaching to any make or model of skid steer loader, the V3 FlexPlane immediately proved beneficial on Minot’s hilly terrain. The contouring action of the FlexPlane prevents floating empty and conversely eliminates the issue of corners digging in to high spots in the planing surface.

“Seeing the versatility of the FlexPlane was really inspiring,” Kallias admitted. “And after using it, I realized just how beneficial it was to the work that we do. I can’t imagine using anything else.”

The self-adjusting blades allowed Accelerated Greenworks to create a consistent cutting pattern throughout the terrain. Unlike a rigid plane, operators never need to stop and manually re-adjust the plane for different ground levels.

“During the Minot reconstruction project, we used two FlexPlane prototypes. This significantly increased job productivity,” Micah Zimmerman, employee at Accelerated Greenworks said. “Continually adjusting to uneven ground, the flexible blades allowed us to easily conquer Minot’s terrain.”

In addition, the FlexPlane was versatile enough to complete the cleanup of debris from a yard, cut out dead sod and level the ground – all without having to stop and switch out the skid steer attachment.

“The FlexPlane incorporates large rear side plates in the back end that can act as a bucket,” Kallias added. “This enabled us to use the plane to collect the dead sod and soil, and then dump it – never having to change the piece of equipment or even get off of the skid steer loader.”

The positive feedback from Accelerated Greenworks came at no surprise to Grouser Products. The company itself had the same reaction when Troy Nicolai of Mankato, Minn., initially introduced the product to Grouser in 2009.

“I have used Grouser products for years, and have always been impressed by the quality products they produce,” Nicolai, inventor of the V3 FlexPlane said. “So I knew that it was the company that I wanted to work with to take the design and help bring it to life.”

Nicolai had been working on the V3 FlexPlane design for six years before approaching Grouser Products. Coming from a construction background, Nicolai knew exactly how the plane should operate to benefit the industry. He worked diligently, spending his nights and weekends welding, building, testing and tweaking his idea until it came to life. That’s when he introduced it to Grouser and slowly watched his dream become a reality.

“The collaboration with Grouser has been better than I could have ever imagined,” Nicolai said. “The team took the design, and we worked together to perfect the construction of it. Grouser has also been providing me with all of the positive feedback the company’s been getting on the prototype.”

Positive feedback may even be a bit of an understatement for the enthusiastic response to the FlexPlane – especially after its work in Minot. The V3 FlexPlane has easily proven its worth, and Nicolai, Grouser Products and Accelerated Greenworks couldn’t be happier.

“We used the land plane probably five out of seven days per week that we were in Minot,” Kallias said. “Its versatility aided in the

reconstruction process, and its simple and open-view design made it easy and safe to use.”

Beyond the time saving benefits, Accelerated Greenworks discovered that the FlexPlane was versatile enough to use even before cutting ground. In addition to removing the dead sod on the Minot lawns, the crew realized that the equipment was durable enough for cutting down and cleaning up the flood debris – silt, decks and other items. In the typical 12-hour day of initial yard cleanup, the crew removed debris from the yard, cut out the dead sod, grass and hedges, and evenly leveled the soil – all while using the V3 FlexPlane. Afterward, the crew used the plane to break up and level the new soil that was brought into the yards for the next phase of the reconstruction process.

“The versatility of the plane was extremely beneficial for increasing job productivity,” Kallias said. “However, even before using the prototype in Minot, we all pretty much fell in love with it.”

Kallias’s crew had been working with the prototype for a year before the reconstruction project, and after seeing what the FlexPlane was capable of, it was no question the team would bring it to Minot. When Accelerated Greenworks was first given the equipment to test, Grouser requested that they not hold back – even going as far as telling them to try to break it. Grouser hoped to see exactly how durable the FlexPlane was, and wanted to identify any potential weak spots. And Accelerated Greenworks put it to the test. The crew used the equipment to break down hardened clay, and even to push upwards of 500 pounds of concrete. The FlexPlane never broke.

“Grouser has been great to work with because we were given free reign to do whatever we wanted with the equipment,” Kallias added. “I mean, what other company gives you a product and tells you to use it and abuse it?”

Additionally, Grouser worked side by side with Accelerated Greenworks on any issue that the team had with the FlexPlane. If the plane didn’t fit quite right on the skid steer or if a bolt was loose, Grouser immediately reworked it and got it back to Accelerated Greenworks. Other than fixing a few minor details and strengthening a couple of bolts, however, Grouser didn’t have much to rework. The design and construction was solid from the start – which was a huge reason why Kallias needed it in Minot during the reconstruction project.

Accelerated Greenworks reconstructed the yards of nearly 15 homes affected by the flood. The team used two FlexPlane prototypes on the jobs, and never had to stop work for mechanical issues. Considering how much time was saved on each yard, the crew accomplished nearly twice what it would have typically done during the three months in Minot without the use of the V3 FlexPlane.

In fact, the prototype made such an impact on Accelerated Greenworks that the company is already planning on purchasing its own.

“We’ll absolutely be purchasing a FlexPlane,” Kallias confirmed. “Actually, we won’t be purchasing one FlexPlane, we’ll probably purchase two!”

Due to the superior work that Accelerated Greenworks completed in Minot in the summer of 2011, it has already scheduled a summer full of jobs to be completed there again in 2012 – validation that Kallias and the V3 FlexPlane are exactly where they were meant to be.

Top: Accelerated Greenworks brought a crew of 16, and two V3 FlexPlane prototypes to Minot.

Bottom: The contouring action of the FlexPlane prevents floating empty and made it beneficial on Minot’s hilly terrain.

The Gordian Group unveiled eGordian®, the first online, current and free construction estimating tool for design, estimating and construction professionals. The website, www.eGordian.com, gives users access to the world’s largest database of construction prices and tasks tailored to hundreds of U.S. localities.

eGordian is accessible from any type of computer, tablet or smart phone connected to the Internet. Users can review local prices for the complete range of construction tasks and materials needed to repair and construct buildings, prepare building sites and complete infrastructure projects like storm sewers and roads. Literally hundreds of thousands of construction tasks and prices can be searched and reviewed.

Prices listed on eGordian are shown for hundreds of metropolitan markets and rural areas around the United States and are updated continually. In addition, it lists the composition of construction crews, the tools and equipment needed for specific jobs and local production rates.

“eGordian has greatly improved the development of estimates,” said H. Sandy Walker, licensed engineer with Engineering Services Div. of Fort Riley, Kan. “Furthermore, I now have the flexibility to customize my working environment to fit my preferences.”

The Gordian Group for more than 20 years has provided the most detailed and accurate construction data for professionals in the Job Order Contracting industry. Job Order Contracting is an expedited procurement system for repairs, alterations and new construction projects used by

building and infrastructure owners such as local, state and federal governments, hospitals and major retailers and manufacturers. The company has amassed and maintains hundreds of thousands of highly detailed construction tasks with accurate labor, equipment, and materials pricing for hundreds of U.S. metropolitan and rural areas.

There is no need for users to register in order to search construction pricing on eGordian.com. Estimating tools do require simple registration so that users can save their work. Registration also allows users to create and edit directory listings of their own firms so that other users can find them.

“The construction industry trails far behind others in utilizing technology to increase productivity,” said Robert Coffey, President and CEO of The Gordian Group. “The Internet drives productivity and efficiency in a host of industries from banking, to real estate, to entertainment. It’s time the construction industry did the same, and Gordian is the company with the vision, data and systems to get it there.”

Gordian will develop eGordian into a community-driven resource. Plans call for features that will let users provide feedback on various materials and suppliers, offer advice, share plans and designs, suggest industry methods and use additional tools developed through partnerships with other companies.

About The Gordian Group: The Gordian Group (www.TheGordianGroup.com) created eGordian, Job Order Contracting and a number of related construction-procurement systems. Gordian combines industry-leading expertise and technology with the world’s largest, locally priced construction task database for rapid deployment and long-term cost savings in the repair, maintenance and construction of buildings and infrastructure.

The Historical Construction Equipment Association (HCEA), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of the construction, announces that one of its 1:10 scale Otis railroad shovel models will be raffled.

Designed in 1835 and patented in 1839, the Otis Steam Shovel is the earliest known land-based single-bucket excavator. Originally built for use in railroad construction by the contracting firm in which inventor William S. Otis was a partner, it remained in production in small numbers until the early 1910s. The design concept of a railroad-mounted shovel whose boom swung approximately ninety degrees left and right was continued by several manufacturers into the late 1920s, and its digging action is seen in today’s cable- and hydraulic-operated shovels.

The 1:10 scale model features a swinging boom, extending and retracting dipper stick, rolling wheels, and operational levers, gears, drums and bucket trip, and comes on a section of railroad track for exhibit. It is the first of a series of scale models being produced exclusively for the HCEA, and was introduced at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2011.

The model sells for $4,500, but raffle tickets are available for $5.00 each. All proceeds will go to fund development of additional models of historic equipment. Tickets are available from the HCEA at www.hcea.net, or by calling the HCEA office at 419-352-5616. The drawing will be held September 15, 2012, at the HCEA’s membership banquet in Bowling Green, Ohio, and the winner need not be present.

The HCEA was founded in 1986, and has over 4,300 members in twenty-five countries. In addition to its magazine and hosting an annual working exhibition of restored construction equipment, it operates the National Construction Equipment Museum and archives in Bowling Green, Ohio. Individual memberships are $30.00 within the USA and Canada, and $40.00 US elsewhere. Information is available at www.hcea.net, or by calling 419-352-5616 or e-mailing [email protected].

LoJack Corp. announced the results of its 12th annual Construction Equipment Theft Study*, providing valuable information on the ongoing issue of equipment theft with annual estimates of the cost of equipment theft varying between $300 million to $1 billion annually**.

According to the report, LoJack-equipped construction assets worth approximately $8.8 million were recovered in 2011. A total of 40 people were arrested by the police as a result of recoveries involving these assets. Since entering the construction market in 2000, the LoJack System has helped law enforcement recover LoJack-equipped stolen construction assets worth more than $130.5 million and

bust nearly 80 chop shops and theft rings.

Here are the top-line results:

• Most Frequently Stolen Equipment: Light Utility/Work Trucks and Trailers

• State with the Highest Theft Rate: California

• Top Manufacturer Targeted for Theft: Ford

“As we look back on 2011, we’re pleased with the ongoing benefits the LoJack System contributes to the construction industry and society at large,” said Courtney DeMilio, national director, Commercial Division, LoJack Corp. “Not only does the System directly impact the bottom line of construction businesses by recovering equipment quickly,

enabling them to keep working, but it helps get the bad guys off the streets. Many of these criminals are professional thieves who are part of theft rings that may commit other serious illegal activities.”

About the Study

The 2011 LoJack Construction Equipment Theft Report is based on state theft statistics and equipment recoveries documented by LoJack in 21 states from January to December 2011. LoJack has been tracking theft/recovery data for the past 12 years and will continue to issue these reports annually to provide the industry with valuable statistics and trend information.
