GROWTH“Design can create equitable spaces that convey a sense
of welcome to all while improving access to essential
services and places of work, socialization, recreation and
culture, especially in underserved neighborhoods.
Extraordinary design can harness latent local qualities,
transforming functional projects into magnetic and
catalytic ones for all.”

EQUITY

— from Design and Construction Excellence 2.0
Guiding Principles, March 2016
“New York can aspire to succeed for all when public
buildings and civic infrastructure ease access and
welcome citizens to services, opportunities and
resources… designed to encourage people of different
races, cultures, ages and abilities to meet, share
wisdom and enjoy each other’s company.”

SUSTAINABILITY“New York City is continuing to move aggressively to
reduce its impact on the environment – meeting
tomorrow’s needs without compromising resources
available to future generations… The City has set a high
bar, pledging a reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions of 80 percent from 2005 levels by 2050 –
with municipal buildings leading the way.”

RESILIENCY
“Resiliency means preparing the City’s public buildings
and infrastructure to maintain service, and rapidly
rebound from extreme events – needs Superstorm
Sandy demonstrated. Design can not only make us
safe, but can also build communities, enhance
neighborhoods and invite investment.”

HEALTHY LIVING
“With Healthy Living as a Guiding Principle, DDC
widens its lens, encouraging its design teams to think
about aspects in the built environment that aid
mental health. Additionally, we continue to support
design that can encourage – and even make
pleasurable – active lifestyles.”
