Controlling– The process of monitoring

activities to ensure that they are being accomplished as planned and of correcting any significant deviations.

The Purpose of Control– To ensure that activities are

completed in ways that lead to accomplishment of organizational goals.

IMPORTANCE OF CONTROL

Helps the organisation in achieving objectives:- The 1st step in management is setting objectives. Inorder to achieve these objectives there should be a proper controlling system.

Helps in improving adaptability to environmental change:- From the time goals are established to the time they

are achieved,many unpredictable events may occur , therefore a control mechanism should be there to monitor , anticipate and respond to the situation.

Controlling helps in maintaining and improving quality:- Controlling helps in efficient use of resources and

thereby minimizing cost. A good quality control system helps to maintain quality products.

Controlling helps in financial matters:- Managers needs to keep tight control over finances and

spend well within the budget.

Controlling helps in monitoring sales:- An effective control system would be able to pin point

the problem and immediate remedial measures can be taken.

Controlling helps in minimizing errors:- An effective control system helps in detecting errors in

time. If a small error is not controlled at the right time it can accumulate and cause considerable damages.

Controlling helps in coping with organisational complexity:-

A sophisticated control system become essential to maintain adequate control over a number of diverse activities. To be effective it has to adapt itself to organisational complexities.

Controlling helps in improving employees performance:- it helps in create an atmosphere of order and

decipline in an organisation . In this kind of atmosphere employees are aware of there duties and standards against the performance will be judged.

Planning refers to a process beginning with objectives, defining strategies, policies and detailed plans to achieve them.

Planning is deciding in advance what to do, how to do it, when to do it and who do it.

IMPORTANCE OF PLANNING

Offsetting uncertainty and changes:- planning is necessary as the future uncertainty and changes.

By forcing managers to look ahead , anticipate change and to develop appropriate responses for this.

Focusing attention on objectives:- planning is directed towards the objectives. The attention of

every manager is focused on these objectives in the every course of performing their respective planning function.

Established coordinated effort:- it gives direction to managers and non managers ,where

organisation is going and what they must contribute to reach the objective,they can cordinate their activities , coorperate with each other and work as a team.

Encourages innovation and creativity:- planning is thinking in advance and therefore there is a scope of

finding out better and different methods and ways to achieve the desired goals.

Facilitating control:- planning provides standards for controlling employees performance.

the function of controlling is based on comparison between the planned goals and the actual performance of subordinates.

Gaining economical operation:- planning works for efficiency and economy in operation.it is

concerned with the predetermined and well thought out course of action. Therefore it helps to avoid confusion disorder and waste of resources.

In the present dynamic environment which

affects the organization, the strong relationship between the two is very critical and important.

In the present day environment, it is quite likely that planning fails due to some unforeseen events. There controlling comes to the rescue.

Once controlling is done effectively, it give us stimulus to make better plans. Therefore, planning and controlling are inseperate functions of a business enterprise.

Planning and controlling are forward looking.

Planning preceeds controlling and controlling succeeds planning.

Planning and controlling are inseperable functions of management.

Planning and controlling are integral parts of an organization as both are important for smooth running of an enterprise.

Planning and controlling reinforce each other. Each drives the other function of management.
