As a result of the success of DP�����' twocompanies (one national and one international)are interested in an application consisting of theremote reading of DP����� devices� Until now'there has not been a similar product available onthe market� This device' the CM�����' collects

the readings of a group of DP����� devices andsends them to the power company controlcenters by means of standard interfaces such aspublic telephone lines' cellular' radio and carrierdistribution lines� The CM����� is normallyinstalled on distribution poles' and its majorfunction is to read the DP����� devices usingshort wave radio signals� In addition to theoptimization of communication technologiesand remote reading' it could be possible todetect the total illicit deviations with a systembased on the CM����� concentrator�

Fuzzy control is a recent technology wich isbeing applied to both the industry in general andpower generation processes in particular� It isconsidered that this technology offers diversebenefits: facilitates the implementation andmaintenance of control systems and improvestheir efficiency and robustness� In this field' IIEdeveloped a digital control system for velocityand power generation for gas turbines based onfuzzy logic� IIE has also developed a system fortuning fuzzy controllers based on artificialneural networks and a simulator for testingalgorithms and control strategies for heatrecovering steam generators in combined cyclepower plants� The latter is a system for thetesting of conventional as well as modernalgorithms and control strategies� It comprisesan industrial�type PC in which dynamic modelsof the process reside' and a SAC�IBUS IIIcontroller where the control algorithms reside�The benefits that can be obtained with thisequipment depend on the application; it can beused for closed loop dynamic simulation tests �allowing a reliable initial tuning of the controller�' parameter adjustment in order to improve theperformance of control systems' as well as forthe evaluation of new control strategies� Also' itwill be possible to use this system fordeveloping experimental dynamic studies'evaluating man�machine interfaces' as well asfor operator training� These systems can be usedin those plants in which power generation isbased on gas turbines�

simulator based on Unit 0 ofthe Tula Thermal Power Plantlocated in Hidalgo State� Formore than 0F years' thissimulator has been used by theOperator Training Center atIxtapantongo (Centro deAdiestramiento de Operadoresde Ixtapantongo'CAOI) ofCFE´s Generating Office(Subdirección de Generaciónde la CFE) to train theoperators of the thermalpower plants owned by theMexican utility� Since thesimulator´s computers hadbeen operating for 01 years'they required replacement�The new hardware andsoftware platforms are basedon the hardware architecture(a workstation network) andthe simulation software (real�time executive' instructorconsole' data bases and dataacquisition systems) designedby IIE for the Unit 0 Laguna

Verde Nuclear Power Plant Training Simulator�The mathematical models coded in Fortran �Gould were migrated to Fortran ANSI andfunctions were installed to simulate plant noiseand burner flames� The new computer platformhas the capacity to incorporate more complexmodels' with augmented scope and fidelity'without affecting the requirements for real�timesimulation� Since there is a development nodeindependent of the simulator´s workstationnetwork' it is possible to carry out maintenance ofthe models' minimizing the usage of the controlboards' hence providing increased availability ofthe simulator for training sessions� Additionally'the development node can be used to conductclassroom courses since it contains a completeversion of the simulator with graphic mimics ofthe control boards�

plant simulators� The simulator was installed at theGeothermoelectric Simulation Center in Cerro Prieto(Centro de Simulación Geotermoeléctrica de CerroPrieto)' where the acceptance test procedures weresuccessfully applied� This new CFE training centerplans to initiate operator training with the simulatorin early ����� The use of this simulator will enhancethe availability of geothermoelectric plants' preventfailures and unplanned shutdowns and increase theuseful life of equipment�

CAOI� The mathematical models of the differentsystems of the reference plant were coupled andimplemented using the TRAX simulationsoftware environment� In this simulator' as inthe real power plant' the operation isaccomplished by means of computerized controlstations' through interactive process diagramsof the distributed control system (Bailey Infi 1�)and the electro�hydraulic control system of theturbines (General Electric Mark V)� There are nostandard instrumentation and control boards'except an emergency panel for display of somesignals� This simulator will allow training ofoperators of this kind of modern power plantand complements the simulators owned by CFEand operated by CAOI�

One of the actions taken to face the Year ����(Y�K) problem was to identify the current statusof critical systems in different areas within CFE�Hence' several audits were conducted to detectthe equipment that required software upgrade toensure a trouble�free transition from 0111 to����� A number of thermal power plants wereaudited' as well as some substations andmanagement systems� These actions insured thatCFE’s internal Y�K project would comply with thestandards established by the Secretary of theComptroller and Administrative Development(Secretaría de la Contraloría y DesarrolloAdministrativo' Secodam)' detecting potentialrisks and proposing solutions�

Y�K problem and followed�up each element untilthe situation was remedied� Likewise' a Status andEvents Monitor System (SIMONEE�����) wasspecified' allowing real�time documentationgathering of Pemex facilities´ status as well asevent reporting during the transition to the year����� Due to these actions' Pemex now has anintegral methodology for implementingmechanisms for real�time data acquisition thatprovide operative' managerial and executiveoriented information� Such data is used to defineactions and to develop applications related toindustrial safety and environmental protectionaimed to improve facilities´ reliability' as well as toaid emergency management in minimizing theenvironmental impact�

IIE provided technical support to CNLV in theelaboration of a feasibility study of a qualityassurance plan for digital technologycomponents� For this' it was necessary toanalyze the national and international norms forthe nuclear industry� In addition' there wereseveral meetings with CNSNS and a visit to theSan Onofre Nuclear Power Plant of SouthernCalifornia Edison Company in the United States�As part of these activities' a regulatory guide fordigital equipment was developed' containing adescription of the norms in Mexico' the UnitedStates and those approved by the InternationalAtomic Energy Agency� In the following years'IIE will continue to provide technical support inorder to standardize and implement a softwarequality assurance plan at Laguna Verde�

IIE researchers initiated exploration in anelectricity database in order to find knowledgerepresented by associations or patterns thatcharacterize the plants that generate electricity�CFE provided IIE with approximately G�'���monthly records of events that occurred inhydroelectric stations in a ��year period (011M and0115)� Using three of the main data miningalgorithms' it was possible to determine how thefault events' forced outages and performance dueto equipment failure are related� Also' it waspossible to determine the percentage of eventduration and the percentage of unexpected faults�In this way' it is possible to predict' approximately'the time and type of fault in some electricequipment� The patterns that characterize theseunits help to detect new situations that present asimilar behavior and' therefore' prevent majorfaults' reducing the costs due to faults inequipment and systems�
