If you no longer serve as an elder or are unable to care for this assignment for some other reason, please notify

the Convention Desk IMMEDIATELY by calling (not text messaging) at (0999) 886 2119, (0917) 831 5219, (0932) 860

4519, and (02) 411 6090 local 3306/ 3307. Please call during office hours from Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to

5:00 p.m. You will be advised as to what you should do with the material you have received.

Please read and follow carefully all the instructions supplied.

So that the audience can follow along as you read scriptures, please use the New World Translation. There may

be an occasion when you will want to quote the New World Translation and thereafter briefly show how another transla-

tion renders a phrase or a verse. You may use your good judgment in this regard, bearing in mind what is stated in The

Watchtower of October 1, 1997, page 20, paragraph 15.

Some convention speakers have, at times, deviated from the language of the program and used another language.

With good motives, a speaker might have done this because he felt it would benefit the children who perhaps would

grasp more readily the meaning of what was being said. This practice was becoming widespread at congregation meet-

ings, especially when information regarding youths was being presented. We are concerned that this practice, which al-

lows some of the children to get a better understanding, cuts off the majority who expect to be instructed in the designat-

ed language of the program. First Corinthians 14:9 says: “Unless you through the tongue utter speech easily understood,

how will it be known what is being spoken? You will, in fact, be speaking into the air.” Also, out of respect for the prin-

ciple of parental headship, we feel it is inappropriate to counsel young ones while excluding many parents from under-

standing what is being communicated to their children.—Eph. 6:1, 2.

Additionally, some speakers have introduced scriptures by using catchy expressions such as “meet me at . . . ,”

or “let us rendezvous at . . . .” It seems best that such innovations not be used. Neither should the audience be invited to

read scriptures aloud with you. We encourage, instead, following the guidelines in study 20, “Scriptures Effectively In-

troduced,” in the book Benefit From Theocratic Ministry School Education. Several appropriate ways of introducing

scriptures are outlined therein.

Preparation: There is no substitute for getting to know your subject. Allow enough time to prepare thoroughly;

do not procrastinate. Advance preparation is particularly important when interviews or demonstrations are involved. The

interviews should be natural, realistic, and practical. They should be presented in a conversational manner. Always main-

tain Christian dignity. Some interviews seem flat and appear canned or formalistic because those being interviewed labor

at repeating a memorized presentation or they read their own experiences. The interviewer should know what he wants

those being interviewed to relate, and he should lead them with appropriate questions so that their comments are natural

and spontaneous. Only by thorough preparation and rehearsal can this be accomplished.

We live in “critical times.” (2 Tim. 3:1) Many of our brothers and sisters are facing severe pressures and tests of

faith. They come to regional conventions to be refreshed and strengthened spiritually. Your thorough preparation and ef-

fective delivery of this part can do much to encourage them.

Participants: If your assignment calls for the use of participants, you will be responsible for selecting them. On-

ly baptized publishers should be used, ones who are exemplary in every respect. When your assignment calls for the use

of children, it would also be good to use those who are baptized. In every case, you should make sure that prospective

participants are exemplary by first checking with their Congregation Service Committee. If it is hard to locate partici-

pants who fit the description supplied in the material, contact the circuit overseer, since he may know who might be

available. Do not use individuals whose past disfellowshipping, reproof, or questionable conduct could raise questions in

the minds of some in the audience. Problems result when brothers do not use sound judgment when selecting partici-

pants. Therefore, select as participants only those who will enhance the program by their presence on the platform.

Dress and Grooming: Proper dress and grooming will contribute much to the dignity of the occasion. As Chris-

tians, we want to adorn ourselves “with modesty and soundness of mind.” (1 Tim. 2:9) This involves considering the

feelings and attitudes of others and not insisting on one’s personal preference. It also means avoiding hairstyles or cloth-

ing that others may view as extreme or trendy. It is wise to lean toward being conservative in this setting. Those giving

talks on the program should wear suits or barong tagalog, not sport coats with matching pants or other casual attire. If

your talk calls for an interview or a demonstration, please make sure your participants are aware of the importance of

good grooming and modest dress. A lack of consideration in this matter could disturb some in the audience and detract

from the program.

Check-in Time: The convention chairman has oversight of preparation for the entire convention program. He

will also supervise the actual carrying out of the program, working closely with the convention program overseer as to

interviews, demonstrations, and dramas. Please cooperate fully with the convention chairman and the program overseer

before and during the convention. Be sure to report to the Chairman’s Office: (1) the first day of the convention, (2) at

least 30 minutes before the program begins on the day of your assignment, and (3) at least 30 minutes before you are to

appear on the program. If your talk includes participants, they should report along with you at the final check-in. If for

some reason you will not be attending the first day of the convention but plan to deliver your part on the assigned day,

please let the chairman know this well in advance. After you finish your part, you may be requested to report to the

Chairman’s Office, as the brothers there may have some observations for you.

Please keep information concerning your part STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL, discussing it with no one other

than those participating with you on the program. Also, impress the importance of confidentiality on all who will be

working with you. No information regarding this assignment should be disclosed, copied, or distributed by any means.

To the extent possible, we want our brothers and sisters to learn of the points made and to hear the program first when

they attend the convention. Your diligent cooperation in this regard is essential and is very much appreciated.

You have been extended a privilege of service not available to many brothers. May Jehovah’s rich blessing be

with you as you prepare for this privilege to his praise and to the benefit of his people.

Your brothers,
