Creating the illusion of orchestral color in Book 2 of Debussy’s Preludes can be achieved not only through differentiation of dynamic planes, but also through the simultaneous execution of sustained notes/chords against articulated elements such as staccati. Such problematic passages will be examined and demonstrated with and without sostenuto pedal, and with careful attention paid to the resulting changes in articulation and color.

The goal of this presentation is to explore Barber’s stylistic traits, ranging from counterpoint, ostinato, rhythm, lyricism, to drama through an overview of his piano works. Drawing from her previous doctoral thesis, “The Piano Concerto of Samuel Barber”, the presenter will focus mainly on analysis of the larger Concerto and Piano Sonata, with the hope of increasing further understanding and appreciation of Barber’s music.
