WHAT IS GRIME MUSIC?

• Grime music is very similar to what American’s would call Hip-Hop.

• The main theme that grime is all about, making a better life for themselves, making themselves being publicly known.

• This genre is shown through the music video very well, this is how it is recognised. We have looked at the typical music video conventions of this genre.

GRIME MUSIC VIDEO’S

• Grime music video’s have typical conventions to be recognised by audience’s

• None of the grime music video’s we have looked at really try to break these conventions because they are aware what is easiest to sell.

• We want to create a grime music video with a difference, whilst breaking some of the rules,

we want to incorporate some idea’s of American Hip-Hop.

TYPICAL LOCATIONS

• Looking a the locations of where grime music video’s are filmed, it is obvious that they are mostly set in the streets of cities where the artist’s were most likely to have grown up in.

• A prime example of artist’s using this location is, Ndubz earlier video’s. E.g. the video ‘I Swear’ is set in their home hangout’s.

TYPICAL LOCATIONSEXAMPLE: n dubz, ‘I Swear’

Location is set on a bridge, this could simply just to relate to the lyrics of the song or it may because it sends out an image that this is local.

In the background there are houses, this makes use think that this location may relate to the narrative of the song, or even the image of the genre.

The location relates well to the image that this genre tries to create, “on the street’s”

TYPICAL LOCATIONS

This location relates very well to the genre of grime, this is shown through many things such as:

Graffiti is on the wall, this is to show reality and that this location is on “the streets”

the fact that he is stood against a concrete wall (that is most likely situated in a car park or something similar to that) to create a sense of realism.

EXAMPLE: N Dubz, ‘I Swear’

TYPICAL CHARACTERS

• The artist’s themselves are the characters in these music video’s.

• This is a good thing as it closes a link between the artist and the audience, it makes the audience become more familiar with the artist, but most of all it helps the audience being able to relate to the artist more, as they are most likely have the same background of growing up.

• This is a really good thing because it makes the audience more aware of the artist’s life and this could help the artist’s promote themselves.

TYPICAL CHARACTERSEXAMPLES: N Dubz

Character’s usually found in music video’s are the artist’s themselves.

Sometimes these artist do involve extra’s in order to tell the story (narrative) N Dubz involve extra’s quite a lot in their video’s as a lot of their video’s are narrative based are narrative based. E.g. ‘I Need You’, ‘I Swear’ and ‘Girls’ etc.

TYPICAL MISE-EN-SCENE

• The mise-en-scene is very specific to the brand image of the artist.

• Grime artist’s will dress in a specific way to promote their brand image. The music video’s will be created in order to promote the brand image of the artist, whilst releasing a new song.

• It is shown that the video’s main reason is to get more publicity and make the public aware of this artist.

Page 10: Conventions of grime music video’s

TYPICAL MISE-EN-SCENEEXAMPLE: ‘I Swear’ by N Dubz

the artist is dressed in a named jacket ‘Adidas’ this is because it is a well known brand and it incorporates the idea of him being able to get what he wants, whilst still looking to what his style would have been recognised in ‘The Streets’

The artist is wearing sun glasses, this is to show that he is a well known artist and that he has made something of his life

Page 11: Conventions of grime music video’s

TYPICAL MISE-EN-SCENEEXAMPLE: ‘I Need You’ by N Dubz

In this music video, the artist’s have been colour co-ordinated in order to stand out and make them look more of a group. Black and red have been used in this particular video.

The two male artist have still dressed in a casual way to make the audience aware that they are still intact to their grime background

The guys have accessorised their costume with sunglasses, bandanna’s and silver chains, this is to show yet again that they have made a better life for themselves.

TYPICAL NARRTAIVE• The narrative behind most grime music

video’s is realism.• This narrative may also evolve around

other narrative’s, but this is the main one.• The music video’s are usually to do with

the artist’s past or home life, this relates to how their music video’s show that they have made something of their lives (made it better).

Page 13: Conventions of grime music video’s

TYPICAL NARRATIVEEXAMPLES

This shot establishes a lot as it creates a very clear image of what the artist’s are trying to tell us

In this screen shot we are able to see that the artist’s are what would be seen as working class but are making their life better

The narrative of this music video, is they want what they cant have, this is shown by the status difference of who they are and who they want is of a different social status.

Page 14: Conventions of grime music video’s

TYPICAL MEDIA LANGUAGE

• the media language is very important in any music video as it is the different shots that help create the story of which the music video is telling the audience.

• Because the music genre grime evolves around the artist life and their stories it is most likely that many close up shots and medium shots are used to show this

Page 15: Conventions of grime music video’s

TYPICAL MEDIA LANGUAGEEXAMPLES

A medium shot has been used here to show sympathy for the character, with out drawing attention away from the artist’s

By using a medium shot, we are able to see not just his facial expressions but also his posture and other varieties that as an audience we will notice.

By using this shot, we are able to see the defeat in which he feels

EXAMPLE: N Dubz ‘wouldn’t you’

Page 16: Conventions of grime music video’s

TYPICAL MEDIA LANGUAGE

A close up has been used here to show the audience what her feelings are as this is part of the narrative story being told that mirrors what the lyrics are.

Her facial expressions are very clear because of the CU shot

The character is looking straight into the camera, this is to show that we are looking at her through another characters eyes.

Page 17: Conventions of grime music video’s

TYPICAL IDEOLOGIES

• The main ideology is based on love. This maybe having a love that didn’t turn out or thinking they had what they wanted but it was all lies.

• This ideology is not just typical in grime music video’s, but genres of all types.

Page 18: Conventions of grime music video’s

TYPICAL IDEOLOGIESEXAMPLE: N dubz ‘wouldn’t you’

In this shot it is shown that the woman is in a relationship with someone but is longing to be with her butler

We are able to tell her true feelings by the way she looks at him, and in the next shot how he feels that he isn’t worthy to be with her.

Page 19: Conventions of grime music video’s

TYPICAL IDEOLOGIESEXAMPLE: N dubz ‘wouldn’t you’

In this screen shot there is still the theme of love

It is clear in this shot that both characters in this want to be together, but are unable to be (this is shown in the next shot) her friends come over and they are of a higher status than he is and therefore the couple would not be accepted.
