Converting Between Units of Pressure • There are many different units of pressure used in chemistry. You must be able to use all of them and convert between them. Here they are: – atmospheres (symbol = atm) – millimeters of mercury (symbol = mm Hg) now called torrs – kilopascals (symbol = kPa) • Conversions: 1 atm = 760.0 mm Hg = 760.0 torr = 101.33 kPa Standard Temperature: 0°C/ 273K tandard Pressure: 1 atm/760 mmHg/760 Torr You need to know: ‘STP’ means Standard Temperature and Pressure. Converting Between Units of Pressure• There are many different units of pressure used

in chemistry. You must be able to use all of them and convert between them. Here they are:– atmospheres (symbol = atm) – millimeters of mercury (symbol = mm Hg) now called

torrs – kilopascals (symbol = kPa)

• Conversions:1 atm = 760.0 mm Hg = 760.0 torr = 101.33 kPa

Standard Temperature: 0°C/ 273K

Standard Pressure: 1 atm/760 mmHg/760 Torr

You need to know:‘STP’ means Standard Temperature and Pressure. At STP, one mole of gas occupies 22.4 L.

Gas Laws Problems

1. If I have 5.6 liters of gas in a piston at a pressure of 1.5 atm and compress the gas until its volume is 4.8 L, what will the new pressure inside the piston be?

2. If I have 45 liters of helium in a balloon at 250 C and increase the temperature of the balloon to 550 C, what will the new volume of the balloon be?

3. A constant volume of oxygen is heated from 100C to 185C. The initial pressure is 4.1 atm. What is the final pressure?

DIRECTIONS: For the following problems, show the Given, Formula, and Substitution. Include units in your answer and round to the nearest hundredth.

10. A gas sample has a pressure of 800.0 mmHg. What is the pressure of this gas sample in atmospheres?

11. Using the gas sample mentioned above, what is its pressure in kilopascals?

12. A tank of oxygen is under a pressure of about 4.00 x 103 kPa. Express this pressure in millimeters of mercury.

DIRECTIONS: For the following problems, show dimensional analysis. Include units in your answer and round to the nearest hundredth.
