11 A.M. KRUEGER FINE ARTS SERIES: Mayhem Poets“Let’s go see a poetry show.” That is a sentence rarely proclaimed and usually responded to with cringes and excuses. The Mayhem Poets are on a mission to change that. Having been dubbed “an amazing ride” by the New York Times, this mind-boggling performance has been described as “The Simpsons meets Malcolm X at a Notorious B.I.G. concert.” These theatre-trained, comedically gifted, lyrical virtuosos seamlessly blend raw elements of hip hop, theatre, improv and stand-up comedy to tell gut-wrenching truths that leave audiences forever changed.

See some clips of their amazing performances at mayhempoets.com.

7 P.M., MEAD PUBLIC LIBRARY, SHEBOYGANWISCONSIN ACADEMY LECTURE: “What’s Going On In Our Great Lakes?”J. Val Klump, senior director and dean of the School of Freshwater Sciences Great Lakes Water Institute at UW-Milwaukee, will discuss the current state of the Great Lakes and what the future holds. The Great Lakes alone contain one-fifth of the world’s supply of surface freshwater – the greatest single freshwater resource on the planet. Yet despite their size, these lakes are surprisingly fragile and are subject to a host of complex and interacting stresses, which Klump will discuss.

7:30 P.M.LAKELAND UNIVERSITY COMMUNITY BOOK READ: Jelani CobbThis year’s book read keynote address will offer several events and activities around the central theme of diversity. We are thrilled to welcome Jelani Cobb, an award-winning staff writer at The New Yorker and the Ira A. Lipman Professor of Journalism at Columbia Journalism School, for a discussion about race and diversity. We recommend that attendees read the award-winning book, “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates prior to this event. Cobb’s keynotes inspire us to work, tirelessly, toward achieving an ongoing dream of equity—of genuine democracy. They show us that not only are the levers of justice in our hands, but we can move them in the direction we see fit. And they remind us that the only obstacle holding us back is the comforting illusion that we’ve already achieved our goals.
