In today's world, both cost and ecological considerations have companies moving in droves to the new"R.S.C." - Returnable Shipping Containers.

The lifetime cost of ownership for "returnables"is far lower than "inexpensive" 1-way corrugatedshipping containers.

A life of 50-100 round trips is quite common. It'salso not unusual for the majority of ConvoyFluted Plastic returnables to last the entire 4years of an automobile design cycle. When theyare finally obsolete, the boxes are recyclable.

There are none of the continual disposal costsassociated with 1-way corrugated.

With our 71 standard sizes, there is a goodchance we have the right size for you. If not, wecan tool up and ship a new size quickly (2'/2-3'/2weeks) and economically (hundreds of dollars,not thousands or even hundreds of thousands ofdollars).

STATIC CONTROL

Convoy's least expensive material is unhardened (corrugated) fibreboard.This is an excellent material where light loads and lighter handling areinvolved. Unhardened Fibreboard also makes a great shelf or carouselbox. They are available in assembled, or knock-down versions.

However, do not confuse our boxes with flimsy, "thin-liner" corrugatedboxes. Unless otherwise requested, we use an incredibly tough and thick90# liner (= to 350# test).

The assembled boxes are securely stapled or riveted throughout. Mostlarger size unhardened boxes have "hidden" metal reinforcements overthe hand holes and at the box corners.

The material we use is recycled and can be recycled again, after Itsuseful life is over. A Material Safety Data Sheet is available.

Many accessories are available: lids, partitions, card holders, paint, safetycoating, foam dunnage, silkscreening, rim reinforcement, box-bottomreinforcement, doublewall version.

To order unhardened boxes, add the letter "U" to the box number(example: T31 H become~ T31 H-U).

Solid fibre is a tried and true material which has proven itself inwidespread industrial use over many decades. It is particularly known asa tough handling box, as it resists impact well. Solid fibre boxes can beshipped assembled or knock-down.

Solid fibre is a recycled, multi-ply, laminated fibreboard. Unlike corrugated fibreboard, there are no flutes or air spaces inside the material.(Most people know solid fibre as the material in returnable beer bottlecases, the ones with the hinging half-lids.)

Solid fibre thickness ranges from .060"-.120". The rod frame around thetop rim ranges from 3;'''' to ';'''. Lighter-duty boxes have no rod frame.Solid fibre is moisture-resistant. It is made from recycled material and isable to be recycled when no longer serviceable.

Solid fibre is the least combustible of our materials as there are no airspaces (flutes) inside. In addition to boxes, solid fibre makes very resilientpartitions and dividers.

EXCLUSIVE MATERIAL. ..CHEMBOARD (pronounced KEMboard) is short for "CHEMicallyhardened fibreBOARD". This amazing, rigidifying process was originated by Convoy in1947 and has been perfected during the years since. Today, we are still the only manufacturer of this material anywhere.

CHEMBOARD is not a surface coating, like wax, but a deep impregnation. We die-cut theboxes from highly-absorbent recycled corrugated fibreboard (some of the strongestavailable). The boxes are fitted with hidden metal reinforcements at critical points, thenassembled by securely stapling or riveting them throughout. Next we "french fry" the containers in large vats of hot chemical strengthening solution. When boxes cool, they becomerock-hard and hold their shape. The hardening treatment is safe to breathe and touch.

CHEMBOARD is available in two grades:• Regular-duty Chemboard is made from singlewall corrugated.• Heavy-duty Chemboard is made from doublewall corrugated,

which is twice as thick.

CHEMBOARD boxes are ideal for use in stacking applications, as their rigidity prevents the boxes on the bottom from buckling.They are also excellent when used in storerooms, where their life is almost indefinite.

CHEMBOARD boxes are:• Lower in cost than fibreglass, metal and many plastic containers.• Lighter in weight than metal, wood, or structural foam containers.• Long-lasting (3 to 4 years average life, in everyday handling; 10 to 25 years in storage).• Able to hold heavy loads (a minimum of 30 Ibs.!cu. ft.) even when stacked B high.

SPECIFICATIONS

• A Slipover Lid is a removable lid which "slips over" the entire top opening of the box. It willnot fall down inside the box or slide off the box.

• It keeps out air, dust, and light (when used with closed handholes).• It also allows non-stacking boxes to tier.• A Slipover lid will fit the box it was designed for, as well as any box with the same top width and

length (but a different height).CONSTRUCTION:• Most lids have no "cuffs" on the legs. A few lids have cuffed legs to reduce bowing or splitting.• For maximum strength and life, a rod frame can be inserted inside the cuffed legs (especially plastic).• Most lids are faIrly loose fitting. Custom sizes can be made tight fitting, if you specify that.

FOAM DUNNAGEo Convoy offers foam dunnage designed specifically around

your parts (even for small quantity orders).

o The main foam material we use for our returnablecontainers is a tough, long-lasting, polyethylene(inclUding cross link). However, polyurethane foam(ester or ether) and polystyrene are also available forless demanding applications.

o Special grades are available, such as static-control ormicrocell for class A, mirror-finish surfaces.

o Densities, for polyethylene, range from 1.7# to 9# (percubic foot).

o Thicknesses start at '1:.2'.

o Standard colors include: white, grey, black and blue.Pink is available for anti-static foam.

o Convoluted foam is available as a low-cost way tocushion fragile parts and keep them from moving andsliding.

o Most foam is attached to the box by tough, pressuresensitive adhesive.

o Some foams are available in post-consumer, recycledmaterial. Most foams are recyclable. All foams areCFC-free.

When boxes are frequently used on conveyors or flow racks, or are excessivelydropped and dragged, the bottom may wear out before the rest of the box. Toprevent this, specify one of these extra-cost options.

Hardboard (or Plastic) SoleOur best protector; it can double box life. A ',4" thick piece of hardboard (orplastic) is securely fastened to the outside of the box bottom. It covers the fullbottom to protect the box against excessive dragging and dropping and protectsagainst conveyor use (especially skate wheel conveyors and flow racks). It alsohelps protect box bottoms from the effects of moisture.

Hardboard (not plastic) sales grip well on conveyors; for extra gripping on inclinedconveyors, the hardboard sales can be attached with the rough side "out:' Salesare especially helpful on Series S (stacking) and Series NS (nestacking).

BootBoots can be attached to the outside of the box bottom. They cover the full boxbottom and come up the sides 3" to protect the bottom from dropping anddragging and to prevent damage to the sidewalls from rubbing against conveyorrails. Boots can be made from your choice of several different materials.

Drain HolesSmall holes can be cut in the box bottom to allow liquids to drain out.

Most larger Convoy boxes have standard rim reinforcements built in at no extra cost(hidden metal reinforcements at the top corners and also over the handholes).However, with extra-rough handling, some boxes eventually may tear at those points.For extra protection, specify this extra-cost option.

Rod FramesHighly effective! A sturdy rod frame, hidden under the cuffs, runs around the entire topperimeter of the box. This frame gives even more tearing and splitting resistance to boxcorners & handgrips. It also prevents bowing of box walls.

For larger and medium size boxes, rod frames are made from 'I." steel rod; for smallerboxes, we sometimes use 'AG'. Frames are especially recommended on boxes longer~an~" rRod frames are standard on most Fluted Plastic and Solid Fibre boxes, but can bedeleted for smaller sizes with lighter loads.

Latex paint is used. Our standard coIof is grey,but most any coIof is also available. One coat issprayed on the box, normally on all surfaces, bothinside and out.Plastic boxes do not need to be painted. Theircolor oomes already oompounded in the resin.

SAFETY COATINGECONOMY SAFETY COATINGThe Economy coating is identical to the coating described in the paint section - onecoat of grey latex paint, inside and outside of the box. The only difference is thereason for the painting - to reduce the chance of combustion or tarnish.

- FIREEconomy safety coating is a way to reduce the chances of combustion inChern board, Unhardened Fibreboard or Solid Fibre boxes. The paint acts to sealoff the box material from common hazards, such as matches, cigarettes andwelding sparks.

Plastic boxes cannot be coated by the safety coating. They can be ordered with anoptional fire retardant compounded into the resin. .-NOTE: For more information on the combustion characteristics of our 4 materials,request our Material Safety Data Sheets.

- TARNISHEconomy safety coaling IS used only for our Chemboard material, which can tarnish SILVER. COPPER. GOLD, BRONZE.BRASS and the" ALLOYS when left in close contact for a week or more.

The tarnishing IS a darkening of the surface of the material; no corrosion or pitting takes place. No other metals are affected

The economy safety coating helps prevent tarnish by acting as a barrier, to seal In the vapors of the hardening chemicals, sothat they do not contact the box contents.

An allernative to coating the Chemboard boxes is to store your contents using only a POLYPROPYLENE bag, which is keptclosed between removal of contents. NOTE: Use of any plastic bag other than Polypropylene could cause tarnishing ofcontents.

TARNISHOur Premium Safety Coating also provides tarnish protectionto Chernboard boxes.

PREMIUM SAFETY COATINGwith ASTM E-84. It is an odorless, durable coating for interioruse; it has a wash·resistant, flat finish and is available in tanor white (other colors possible). The coating has been usedfrequently by the Department of Defense in militaryapplications.

Premium Safety Coating is not available for Fluted Plastic. Itcan be ordered with a fire retardant already compounded in.

COMBUSTIONOur Premium Safety Coating is a co-polymer "intumescent"coating, which expands into a thick, multicellular insulatingfoam blanket in the presence of heat over 300°F. Thiscarbonaceous foam blanket sharply limits the spread of flameand insulates the surface.

In plain English, the heat bubbles the paint, leaving an airpocket trapped beneath, which the heat has troublepenetrating.
